Cargo Cover Replacement - Click HERE for Original Thread

The tabs on my cargo cover, purchased new with my MDX 2001 from the dealer, have fallen apart without any abuse and just normal wear and tear after 22 months.

Leith Acura in Cary is replacing it under warranty.

Hopefully, Acura has improved the design and construction so it doesn't happen again.

What do you mean "tabs fell apart"? Could you please elaborate a little ..
Doofy
I received my cargo cover a few weeks ago from Tim. If by 'TABS' you mean the two ends of the pole , I was a bit disappointed that a factory part seemed so flimsy.

I don't use my third row seat very often so won't be needing to take the cover on or off a lot. So hopefully it won't break too easily. Unfortunately the cover wasn't purchased with the car, so I guess the warranty period is pretty short.

Tim, if you happen to be reading this, how long is the warranty on it?
Warzau
I think accesories are one year like parts, BUT!!!
If I recall (cough)Tim(cough) the dealer has no way, knowing if acessories are install before ( 5 years)or after sale of the car.

Exactly. But if you're having a problem with a part I sold, just call me and I'll be glad to take care of it. Your local dealer can also warranty it.

Yes I do mean the tabs. They are attached to the cover material with two small bolts each. On the left tabm 1 bolt came apart and the other is loose, so this tab no longer holds in the cutout. The right tab, while still connected to the cover material, now wiggles ont he cover material, also making it unfit to hold in it's cutout.

Has anyone come across a situation where one of the tabs does not sit properly in the cutoff (while the other one fits perfectly!) so when the X comes across any bump on the road, the cover would come off and roll back? I think the rod holding the two tabs are just a little bit too short for some reason. I have brought it back to the dealer and I am still waiting to hear back from them.

I haven't, however, If I were in your situation. I would have taken the cover out, marched to the parts department, and insist on a replacement. I'd wait to hear from them while standing at the counter...

They have already given me a new one to try on but to no avail. The two tabs just won't stay in the cutoff areas securely. (One would stay in while the other one just barely hang on, so going over any bump, it will come off!!) They said they are going to speak to Acura Canada and see what can be done.:(

The man "TIM" might be the best source of suggestion on this one.

We have the cargo cover on our 02 and don't have any problems. Weird that you have the problem on 2 different covers.

Hmmmm ... Is there a possibility that the problem is not the cover, but one or both of the rear quarter panels??
hondacuraworld
The cover ends should extend fully automatically with the spring mechanism.....can you physically pull the ends out on yours? If they are at the fullest extent of their travel and still springy, something else is an issue here.

MesaBeige: I'm seeing two pictures here -- are you talking about the "tabs" on either end of the roller, or are you talking about the "tabs" on the pullout portion of the shade that go into the "J" slots on either side, just ahead of the liftgate? I'm beginning to think that you mean the pullout-portion tabs, while much of the talk here is about the roller-end tabs.

I have no problems with the "tabs" on the ends of the roller. The "tabs" I am talking about are the ones on the pullout shade that go into the Jslots.

The tabs on my cargo cover have weakened also. They have begun to wiggle a bit, and without severe usage. I've had mine for less than a year now. I think that they should last longer than that.

The dealer said they have not run into this problem before. They are bringing in a new cover to see if the old ones are just part of a bad patch. If not, then it could be the quarter panels as you said. The new ones should be here next week. We'll find out!!

Picked up the new cargo cover

Kudos to Leith Acura in Cary, NC - no questions asked, just replaced under warranty

The cover is a new design that has a handle in the middle, but otherwise is the same (including the tabs wore out in eighteen months).

I picked up my MDX earlier this week and have the same problem. Anyone care to elaborate about what these tabs are?

Fat Cat Boy,

Did Acura ever provide you with a fix:

** If not, what is going on?

** If yes, what was the fix?

I am going to have to bring the X back to the shop and they will look at the quarter panels to see if there is anything whole. So the saga continues.........:( :3:

Fat Cat Boy,

Thanks, let us know what happens.

Noted in your sig line that you state "Canadian Version". Do you live in Canada or the US?

Well, the problem is fixed!! They put extra padding in the rear quarter panel and the cover seems to be holding well so far!! :D

Yes, I do live in the Great White North!!:D :2:
srpbep
Fat Cat Boy,

Does this mean that they added "padding" behind the rear quarter trim?

If so, sounds like they decided that it needed to be "bowed outward" to decrease the distance between the left-side and right-side quarter panel trim ...

This is kinda an old thread but I'm curious if anyone has a fix for the cargo cover problems.

We got one on our '03 and it's very annoying that going over bumps the cover slips out of sliders, causing it to roll back up. The dealer said it is a design flaw but that seems kinda of a cop out. Is there any way to secure the cover better?

baliach,

We have never had the problem you describe. I believe that very few others have had this problem.

I believe that "Fat Cat Boy" had the same problem (see post above). You might want to PM him and I'll bet his problem is gone.

Soooo ... IMHO ... tell your dealer to stop using the canned response "design problem, characteristic, feature, etc." and simply fix the friggin problem. Geez, the dealers are so quick to give up. Why they don't pick up the phone and call Techline baffles me. Why they insist on telling customers TFB just blows my mind.

You might try telling them:

** Fix the problem.
--or--
** Give me an MDX that doesn't have the problem.

Take your pick, either works for me!!!

Also, I might suggest that you change your outlook:

** You bought a $40,000 vehicle.

** You have a 40,000 reasons why the "dealer answer is unacceptable".

** Tell the dealer to give you a loaner and call you when it's fixed. Keep the X a day, a week, a month, whatever it takes, but fix the problem. That is their job.
