Plugs right into the cd changer port on the back of the factory headunit (can be used with or without factory cd changer), two rca cables come out of it (left and right audio), plug in your source, hit the cd button twice to get the changer mode and you're done. No more RF MODULATORS! :)
vincliu
do you mean you buy a after market CD changer and installed by yourself?

can you shot a picture of it?

thanks
ron@se
No. All this is is a plug that goes into your FACTORY radio (in the back of it). It plugs INTO the cd changer port on the back, that's it. If you have the factory EXTERNAL cdchanger, it will work also, that's all i meant :)
vincliu
I see.... misunderstanding .....thanks

ron@se: This is a stretch...but I have the Bose system. Is there a way to get this to work with it...as the bose already has a built in 6 disk changer

I rather use RCA inputs rather than a cassette adapter.
ron@se
yes, your unit controls an external cd changer also. This plugs right into the back of your unit. Dan's MDX is the in dash 6 dish changer and this is what I just installed it on.

Remember, Bose makes Speakers and Acoustic processing equipment. The drivers (what most people call speakers) may or may not be made by Bose, but are either designed to, or selected to, their specifications.

Most of the components and subsystems of all cars are built by OEMs. Many are also designed by the OEM.
Depending on the particular automotive brand, the system may or may not be branded by the OEM. Alpine, Bosch/Blaupluk, Clarion, Harmon, all do this work. Some even have more than one retail brand for their own use, as well as the same or different "nameplate" brands for OEM use.

MB is very brand sensitive. Up to recently you would find no non-MB branded content in an MB vehical (Tire excepted, seems it is historical for tire companies to always use their own brand).

There are two electonic systems in current MBs that are Manufacturer branded. The Bose is one, I work for the other.
My previous position was in the Automotive OEM group in product marketing and planning.

ron@se: hmmm...I thought MDXTROUS had the Premium model MDX...which doesn't have the in dash 6-disc changer.

If this adapter does indeed work with the models with the in-dash 6 disc changer that comes in the Touring Model MDX... How much and where?

Thanks

The in dash 6 works an external cdchanger as well.

I was going to wait a bit to post some pics on this since I'm going back one last time to Streeteffectz this Saturday for some finishing touches to really "complete" the install.

But the sound is pretty amazing, partly because Ron also put in new Infinity 652i s but also because, there is no more static cut-in from the RF modulator. Previously, if left in Pause, or if I was at the Menu screen, if there was an FM station available it would cut in.

The best thing though is the convenience of hitting the CD button twice for video sound.

I have the Base, but I'm assuming that the Touring radio also has an external CD-changer input, despite having the in-dash CD-chagner.

Hi MDXTROUS,

Where is streeteffectz located? I'm in NYC, and was wondering if I can drop by to see your video setup in person. Maybe I can meet you when you go there next.

Streeteffectz is in Rahway, NJ. I'm going there this Saturday morning.

I don't want to sound to skeptical but I don't think the Touring head unit will control a external CD changer. That is why no CD changer is offered for the touring. And therefore an aux input will not be capable via this method. But I could be wrong. I would definitely like an Aux input that does not use any FM modulation. Show us if it works!

Any ideas on how to connect my iPod "cleanly" to the audio system of the 2003 MDX? The current system I use in my '92 Legend (audio in via a long cable connected to a cassette converter) is too ugly to continue to use in my new vehicle. The FM transmitters are not great, I understand. I need a way to plug in an auxillary sound source to the car amplifier. Surely some of you brilliant folks, with a fine taste for cars, also have fine taste in computers and MP3 players. Thanks.

That was also my concern. The FM modulator is not a really good solution, and the cassette adapter does not look the most sophisticated.

Which 2003 do you have? My guess is, if it's the base model, the plug solution will work, where the input will go to the external cd-changer controller. From what others are saying about the Touring Bose, it doesn't look like it has the option for external CD-changer.

Also, just to clarify, I do have the Base, but I do not have a external cd changer. That's the whole point of the plug, it's to trick the radio in thinking there is a cd-changer when it's actually RCA inputs from an external audio source.

Hi MDXtrous:

___Thank you for bringing this mod to our attention. In fact, it doesn’t so much sound like a mod but a simple plug-in mini-harness? For those of us with Premium’s or Premium’s on order, it gives a great tie in to the stock head units AMP for at least a decent sounding RES or X-Box/PS2 setup …

___I have E-Mailed Ron but did not receive a final reply. With the entire external CD-Changer costing < $400.00, the bus cable and RCA breakout connector can’t be much more than $25 - $50 or so, correct? Maybe I should ask if the modded bus cable has both control wiring (would it be needed for the head unit to recognize that something is connected with a simple termination or ground?) or is it a relatively simple 2 channel analog RCA jack setup?

___Thanks again to both of you.

OK, i just got off the phone with acura, but no one can seem to give me a definitive answer. The touring edition with the 6 disk in dash changer has the plug (according to acura) that the base model does, but they can't seem to tell me if it's for a cd changer or not. Maybe someone here has a contact and can find out for sure??? I thought MDXTROUS had the touring, so that's my mistake. But either way, I need an answer.

Also, IF the '03 has the on star system, I can actually tap into the onstar audio and make the audio for dvd work through that. I have done this before and sound is PERFECT :)

The adapter is actually a modified connector that Ron put together. I'm not sure how much he's going to charge, since mine was part of the original install.

Just e-mailed Ron about something else and asked him about the group buy. Here's his reply:

"Yes, group buy for 10 or more will knock like $7 - $10 off the price as we haven’t marked them up too much as it is. I’m still waiting for a definitive answer from ANYONE :) who may be able to tell me if there is in fact changer controls on the in dash 6.

Hi MDXtrous.

Sorry, but I won't be able to make it to NJ to check out your setup. I was hoping you were closer to the Queens/LI area.

I really like your setup a lot. When/If I do it, I probably won't have the patience and time like you did to buy all the parts yourself and bring them to Ron. I will most likely ask him to supply everything.

Thanks for all the great pictures and posts.

how about you sell me one for a group buy price and let me plug in my PS2 and see if it works.

My assumption is that it should work coz i saw the plug-in slot in the back of my touring radio. If it doesn't work then I'm sure someone on the board will buy it from me.

Is there a group buy set up for this??

IF there is a group buy would the price be $75-10 for 10 or more?

I think I am on to something. I found a BMW site that hooked an IPOD up to a radio with an in dash changer. He got his aux input cable from BlitzSafe. I checked out the site and they have an auxilliary input cable for 98-2002 TL, so I imagine it will work for the MDX without a problem. There are two flavors: Aux input, and Aux input with CD Changer adapter.

I found some more info. It appears that the Aux input probably won't work with the 6CD in-dash unit. Here is a site that sells the cable for $69. Take a look. . .

Well, maybe it can't be that difficult, but I know it took Ron, who is a video/audio magazine cover featured installer a LONG time to put it together. I know because he first thought about doing it to my MDX.

I think the pricing is not far off, considering most of these plugs run in that range.

Well, I've got the details on the Group Buy. I've just PMed admin on how to set it up officially.

Here are the details:
I've learned that it will be the blitzsafe adapter afterall.

For those without external CD changers:

$65 shipped for 10+ orders
$60 shipped for 20+ orders

For adapter with CD changer output for those with external CD changers (alpine changers only):

$75 shipped for 10+ orders
$70 shipped for 20+ orders

This WILL work with the in-dash 6 CD Changer on the Touring, verified by both Acura and Blitz.

Single orders are $75 shipped

I'm trying to get a pic of the actual adapter.

However, it's hidden in my install so you can't really see the the RCA cable. But just imagine it as the red and white wire you use for the VCR or DVD audio as a female plug. You just plug in the audio from your source into the red and white cable that connects to your radio.

That's a good point, thanks. I guess I would only need to tap in to the L/R coming in from the rear aux inputs and add RCA's up front for it to work for an Ipod or similar device.

I am torn between replacing the factory cd changer with the Alpine changer that supports MP3 (CHA-S634) and simply plugging in something like an Ipod. I'm leaning towards the changer swap out rather than having a loose player in the car that I would likely not use almost any other time. Clearly there are capacity differences but also determining how to control the mp3 player and tracks is an unknown to me at this time.

Can anyone tell me whether the above changer will fit under the seat where the factory changer goes? Here are the specs:
Chassis Size (W x H x D)in : 10” x 6-7/16” x 2-1/2”
Chassis Size (W x H x D)mm : 255mm x 63mm x 163.3mm

For anyone interested, here is the link to the product on Alpines site: linky

I'm going with an MP3 solution myself and didn't really consider a changer before. The one you linked is a lot cheaper than the MP3 CD HU's that I've been looking at (Sony MD70 and Alpine 7894). My biggest concern is ease of use for my wife. I plan on having a DVD player and screens added and want to make the setup as easy to manipulate as possible from the driver's seat. If my daughter wants a different movie or audio book played, I want the switchover to be convenient. How would another Alpine CD changer work with the stock radio? Would you think that a replacement HU that has MP3 capability gives you better sound? Is the changer replacement an easy way to keep the NAVI voice with the system?
AikiMDX
For anyone interested in a portable mp3 solution to go along with the new AUX input being talked about here, there was an interesting announcement a few days ago from Sony. It looks like a portable cd player but is also a dvdrom/cd-rw drive with usb 2.0 connectivity. The best part is that it will play mp3's from DVD's! So, if you or a friend has the ability to burn dvd's you can have 4GB per DVD of mp3's to play.

From the announcement it looks like about $300 with November availibility.

Not new to the board, but just registered. I don’t want to interfere with the flow of the board or the group buy (apologies in advance). Thought I’d help add some clarifications to questions posed to acura about the Bose system and someone’s statement indicating that no external changer could be added to the Bose in dash 6.

I have a 02 Touring with the excellent in dash 6 Bose system, no-nav. I also HAVE ADDED an external Alpine 620 changer under the passenger seat. So, the Bose system with the 6 in dash WILL control an external changer. I had the changer left over from a 99 BMW 328i (E46) Sport which I recently sold. Tired of the acura changer jamming and playing homemade CDs intermittently, I splurged for $50 at Crutchfield and got the HONIL adapter (could have purchased PIE HON/PC-ALP or Blitzsafe HON/ALP DMX v.1). Plugs right into port beside main radio harness. Press the CD button twice, now I get to listen to what I want and not what acura wants me to listen to. The adapter will control the 620, 630 and MP3 capable 634 with the 130B cable. Will it work with the Touring/NAV MDXs? Likely. Before everyone jumps on me, yes I know those looking at this thread want the adapter with RCA jacks to expand system, was just trying to help with Touring Bose in dash 6 changer questions. Hope everything is opaque now.

I have to speak with Ron about a 17” LCD install at some point in the future anyway but I don’t want to fill up their message backlog needlessly if they already have my information on file.

___As for the display I was talking about in the other thread … The 17” LCD as shown below is just a hair over $500 with various coupons applied available from Dell’s peripheral store. maransm,
I have been wondering about the same thing (especially with the idea of mp3's in folders in the changer). For anyone that might know, would this controller work?

link to Crutchfield for the controller

Ignoring the FM Modulator functionality, it says that it can control any Ai-Net changer. The question would be, can we have two "controllers" on the same cd changer. Or, would we simply plug in the L/R into our factory head units (using an adapter) but not use the factory head unit to control it. Anyone with experience installing this kind of changer and the wiring that goes with it could really help out here. Ron?

If this will work, anyone have suggestions on a good place to put it?

Overview: This unit is an FM modulator with a line level input, so it can be used with any line level source. It will also control Alpine Ai-Net protocol CD, MP3, and DVD changers. It also controls Alpine's XM Radio tuner and with an adapter can control multiple changers.

RF Modulator Features

Modulation Frequencies: The output can be modulated on one of 12 different frequencies. They range from 87.7 MHz to 89.9 MHz in 200kHz steps (87.7, 87.9, 88.1, 88.3, 88.5, 88.7, 88.9, 89.1, 89.3, 89.5, 89.7, and 89.9).

Output level: The output level of the modulator is adjustable to match the volume level of the radio. The volume of each input can be set individually.

Treble Pre-Emphasis: If the treble seems muted during CD playback it can be increased using the Treble Pre-Emphasis circuit. This feature is switchable.

Aux input: Left and right RCA auxiliary inputs are on the side of the hide away unit. ** emphasis mine **

Dimensions: Hide away module: Width=5.127", Height=1.387", Depth=3.715".

FM Playback: When you return to listening to FM radio, turn the power of the FM modulator off, otherwise the antenna signal is decreased.

XM Radio Controller Features

Channel Search: The XM radio channels can be searched one at a time (channel 4, channel 5, channel 6, etc).

Category Search: Using category search you can jump between categories, rather than one channel at a time.

Presets: There are two XM Radio bands (XM1 and XM2). Each XM Radio band has 6 channel presets, for a total of 12.

Display: The information displayed for XM Radio can be changed from Channel Name to Artist's name to Song title (not all displays are available on all stations all the time).

CD Changer Controller Features

Disc Skip: Discs can be skipped in either direction (forward or backward).

Track Skip: Tracks can be skipped in either direction.

Fast Forward and Fast Backward: An audible search in either direction is possible within the track.

MIX: Random play is possible within the disc playing currently. When all the tracks on that disc have played, the changer will load the next disc and play its tracks in random order. Random play can also be selected for all discs.

Repeat: Either the current song or the current disc can be repeated when it finishes. When the last disc in the player finished, the first disc begins playback automatically.

Disc Scan: The first 10 seconds of each track can be played when looking for a specific song.

Multi-Changer Capability: Using the Ai-Net protocol, it is possible to use up to 6 CD changers (optional multi changer switching device required)

Display: This controller and display support CD Text information, ID3 Tag (for MP3s), and Disc Titling programmed into the changer.

MP3: This controller is compatible with MP3 changers. There are also folder up and folder down buttons to quickly find the desired song.

Display Panel

Controls: The wired display has buttons for power, disc up and down, track up and down, Display, and a rotary knob which serves multiple functions.

Mounting: The display can be surface mounted using included Velcro or flush mounted using the included bracket and trim panel.

Wiring: The display plugs into the hide away FM modulator via the attached 76" cable.

Dimensions:
Display: Width=4.44", Height=1.563", Depth=1.085"
With Flush mount bracket: Width=5.14", Height=2.243", Depth=0.635 (Display face extends 0.584" above mounting surface)
