i am looking at a new PDA. i think i just want something to store lots of text, good battery, small design...

i have a palm V and would bee fine with it except for the small memory (2mb)

i think im gonna get the handspring treo 90.

anyone have any experience with this model, or any other thoughts?
mdxxxx
BELOSH,

Have you considered an one of the IPAq models?

The new Sony Clie is also good. It runs on Windows XP now so browsing the internet using the keyboards that comes with it or with the stylus is pretty amazing.

Another option also is that you can download the Yahoo maps and use it for travelling purposes if you do not have a Navigator in your MDX. Clie also have MP3 applications for music, games, and database applications also. Check it out.

I would personally be reluctant to get a PDA combined with something else, especially if that something else is a cell phone (I think the Treo is a cell phone, too). I'd be bugged because it's not only something else to break down, but also because cell phones are synonymous with "throw away," i.e., how long do you keep your cell phones?

Obviously, it comes down to personal values. For some people, the combined unit makes sense. Maybe you keep cell phones a long time, or keep PDAs the same length of time as cell phones, or really dig gadgets, etc.

I have a Palm 505 myself, with which I'm quite happy. Oodles of memory, good battery life, intuitive OS and apps. On the other hand, there are other choices, like the Windows-based PDAs, as well as Linux! For me, Linux sounds really interested, since I used to spend a lot of time on Unix systems. It looks like all three are pretty much equally valuable (that is, if a PDA is gonna be useful to you, any of the three types might satisfy you, otherwise none of them would).

Have fun shopping!

Actually I myself own a Palm VII and not only is it a PDA but it allows me to access the internet using its wireless technology.

When I go to Palm to download the web applications, I can find things like closest restaurants, book hotel rooms, purchase airline tickets, check the status of my flights...check on movies times...etc etc etc...

today...PDA is more than a compact "electronic" day timer....That is why it is called in my opinion an assistant..It is a tool that allows us to lug around a SMALL, single piece of electronic device that combines all the other things that we had to lug around before, pager, laptops(email and internet access), phones.. faxes..etc etc..

PDA in my opinion will be an involving piece of device whereas the Cell phone and two way pagers and laptops are electronic devices...that have to be reengineer to obtain all the amenities of what a wireless on the go users want.

I hope one day that a PDA will be a Daily Planner, laptop, cell phone and identification device...Am sure it will happen...it is evolving as we speak.

Hi Belosh:

___I do believe the iPAQ 39xx series PPC’s are the best in the business right now but … make sure you do a search on the Viewsonic V35 Pocket PC’s: 300 MHz X-Scale – Transflective backlit screen – 32 MB ROM – 64 MB RAM, and an SD slot. All for just $249.00 w/ free shipping from Amazon as a preorder. After that, make really sure that you do a search on the Dell Clemente due out in early to late November. This PPC is going to make many an expensive iPAQ owner scream loudly in pain! 300/400 MHz X-Scale’s – 32/64 MB RAM - 32/48 MB ROM’s – Transflective backlit screen - CF and SD slots – Jog Dial – PPC 2002 Premium (whatever that means?) - as well as a 1440 mAh battery for get this … $199 and $299 respectively! You can get more details on this soon to be PDA market leader here.

___Now as for what to use them for … GPS NAVI of course ;)

___And as a caveat … The 400 MHz X-Scale processors have issues. Mainly a memory read or write problem? Apparently a lot of people are blaming MS for not optimizing PPC 2002 for the X-Scale but for the StrongArm v4 because of its large user base (BS …). Than to find it may also be a problem with the early and present stepping of the chip from Intel themselves which should be cured with future X-Scale steppings shipped after the November/December time frame. In either case, many 206 MHz based StrongArm based PPC’s perform some multimedia app functions better/faster than their 400 MHz X-Scale brethren. Especially if your iPAQ or Tosh StrongArm equipped PDA is OC’ed with the Pocket – Rocket tools of the trade :D

___Finally, make sure you hit the forums of the two sites where the pics and descriptions I linked come from. It should be an eye opening experience for anyone looking at the PPC as more than a just a simple Calendar/Scheduler/Contacts database tool as well as to see what is available today and possibly tomorrow in terms of HW available.

___Good Luck

I have a Treo 90. Second Handspring product I have owned. And will be the second I have had to have replaced under warranty within 3 months of purchase. My 90's screen backlight is dead, so the screen is unreadable. It is a known problem, that has been corrected per the website, but they did not issue a recall or notice. Just wait until yours dies, and they will ship you one in "2 days". 2 days now 4 workdays and moving on.................

A great product when it works, perfect size. Pretty good screen (Sony is MUCH better for Pix though). Not sure I would ever buy Handspring again though

From talking with my friends from Japan the fourth generation Clie uses a wireless technology similar to the GSM technology as that used in the current digital phones today.

It is considered a subscriber product now. Service is available through Sony directly similar to Palm, Inc. for the Palm VII
Warzau
If you asked me 2 years ago I would say Palm all the way. But now Palm has run stagnant and their processors are dated. If you are not getting the Sony Clie get a Pocket PC.

I agree with xcel,

I currently own an iPaq 3870 (upgraded from a PalmVx). As far as procesing power, memory, ect. I think you'll get more bang for your buck. I inderstand the newer 39xx series raised the bar. I like the integrated bluetooth as well. Plenty of GPS software for the iPaq. I could go on and on...

How about the new tmobile sidekick. I'm using mine right now to wirelessly read and post. The device is actually a danger hiptop (www.danger.com) but tmobile and compusa sells them.

$200 for the device and $40 a month for all of the wireless web, email, and instant messaging you can eat along with cel phone minutes. Quite the bargain for what it does.

It's not perfect by any means but it does a lot for the dough. Worth checking out.

Have you seen the new Viewsonic PocketPC PDA?

It was on pre-sale for $249 but is back up to $299. It looks like an awfully nice PDA.

Compusa is doing an additional $100 rebate for the Danger Sidekick, so it's at $99!! What a bargain. Too bad my AT&T contract won't expire until May. But hopefully by then, the color Sidekick will be out, hopefully with SD slot and MP3 playability. I would seriously consider putting my iPaq aside...

I just replaced my Palm Vx with the new Palm Tungsten T. It is loaded with features, but most importantly, has a very small form factor. The only drawback I see is the price tag, low to mid $400 (try Staples).

I just order the new Dell online @ www.dell.com. Nice. I currently have a IBM/palm Vx. Look for it soon on ebay :)

Dell is getting alot of ink on their new PDA, especially price. The Dell people told me they sold over 40,000 units almost as soon as they started taking orders and not to expect delivery until mid-December. There are numerous features but no BlueTooth. Also, they will add the Palm OS next year. Check out the web site in prior post.

I think this is one amazing looking/featured PDA for the money! Maybe the licensing for Bluetooth was more than Dell wanted to spend and still maintain their pricepoint. Wireles PDA would be nice to have but certainly isn't a necessity in my house. I only use my Palm M105 to read eBooks and ocassionaly play Bejewled anyway.

Hi All:

___Actually, I received a conformation E-Mail that my Dell Axim X5 64 MB RAM/48 MB ROM/400 MHz X-Scale/3.5” Transflective screen/CF I/II and SD slot equipped PDA was shipped out last Friday. It was only $250.00 total after IL state tax and free shipping including the $50.00 mail in rebate, the 10% off Dell SB coupon floating around the net, and my own personal 10% off Dell SB E-mail coupon. I would have liked to own the high end Compaq H5450 w/ WiFi, BlueTooth, and its TFT based 3.8” Transflective screen but at the cost of almost three of these High End and just as fast Dell’s, I passed! The PDA world is certainly heating up, isn’t it ;)

___As for BT and WiFi, this spring is when Dell is supposed to offer the X7 w/ one or both of these types of wireless communication built in. I would hope to see a TFT screen in a 4” form factor and the wireless HW added to the list but I may be dreaming … Destinator’s Navtech based GPS solution is already doing 3D views like the latest 03 NAVI so this is going to be very nice addition for those of using our PDA's as an inexpensive GPS NAV solution … Now if those 2 and 3 GB CF cards would come down in price :(

Hi All:

___Just learned a few minutes ago that Dell is pushing their 300 MHz/64/32 MB Axim X5 units at their own Kiosks for just $149.00 after the $50.00 rebate starting this week! Here is the link to find if there is a Kiosk near you. This slightly lower end version is only lower end by using a slightly slower Processor and slightly less RAM vs. the more expensive brethren. Damn, $149.00 for a first rate – full blown – full 64K TFT screen equipped PDA w/ CF and SD slots! I simply cannot believe this :jump3:

I read up on the Dell PDAs and was quite impressed.
I was leaning more towards the Clie because I am using memory sticks in almost everything else now. Well, primarily cameras and a digital camcorder, but plan to have Sony PC as my next one which is imbedded with an MS slot.
The iPAQ is great, if not a bit over the top for my use. Being retired altered my geek requirements somewhat. Although I did approach the 8mb capacity of my ol' Handspring, not that every program I loaded in their was for work......
Even if I get the Clie it will likely be after the holidays when I expect the 615 to drop to $200 for a new one, not a refurb.
By then I will probably find something else!
It's an amazing market though, and lots of fun pouring through the possibilities.
xcel
Hi DaleB:

___I can certainly understand your choice because of the memory sticks … Just make sure you take a good look because the feature advantages an Axim X5 (MS OS equipped) has on everyone (Sony, Toshiba, Compaq, Casio …) no matter the OS (MS or Palm) is truly amazing at $149.00! In any case, I saw 256 and 512 MB CF for just $70 and $140.00 respectively (Buy.com after rebate) just last week. The 1, 2, and 3 GB CF memory are on there way but the prices are a bit out of touch … at least for the next few months anyway ;) The reason I mentioned the memory is that Navtech maps of the states in the 2.x Destinator PDA GPS package are ~ 1.2 GB in size and split down the middle of the country w/ a 600 MB East and a 600 MB West. I really need a 1 GB size for vacations and IBM’s 1 GB Micro Drive is a bit expensive for something that I am sure will fail long before any CF memory will.

I am not decided yet, and just having another memory adapter on a PC is no big deal.
I could still download photos from PC to CF mem to PDA. Not that a big deal.
Or use an adaptor with PDA...a little more hassle.
I like the Navtech idea...too bad they have to be 600mb each......
I do like having MS OS.
Saw a Michael Dell interview a few weeks ago, he said he plans to counter anything Silicon Valley can come up with, he wasn't kidding.
DaleB
No Dell Kiosks in CA. One the dell site the Axim X5A is $299, (199 for the X5) still a great price for a great PDA and Costco has the iPaq 3835 for $319 after rebate.
Of course, with Costco you have to pay tax. Not with Dell.
I read some reviews at CNET and these were all rated high, but the highest rated were the Toshiba e310 and 740.
I am learning more about the capability of these wonders as I do more research.

Hi DaleB:

___Coupons, Coupons, and Coupons … There is a $50 rebate on the Dell's and with the Internet 10% plus your own 10% (sign up for a Dell mag should get you one of those) coupons, your set. Do not pick up the Reflective iPAQ 3835 at any cost. The screen, memory, and expansion capabilities are not nearly what the Dell offers in the $150.00 variant let alone the $250 version of the X5. The much newer Transflective screens of the 3900 series iPAQ’s, Viewsonic 35’s, Toshiba 7xx series, and these new Dell’s come equipped with are vastly superior to the 3835’s.

Thanks I am making a list of all these suggestions, for review later when I make my final decision. Are you talking about the Dell flyers? We get Dell stuff once or twice a month. Have 3 Dells of one kind or another at home.
I do like the Clies more and more for the incredible display, (although color saturation is lacking to a degree) upgradeable flash memory,

check out the video demo:

But this review was at the begining of the year, a lot has happened since.

Thanks again for the info on the screen technology, that's crucial especially if you plan to do work with photos, etc.

I have the Sony Clie NX-70V pda and it is very nice. Has a 300K pixel built in digital camera, excellent color screen, uses Memory Sticks, and runs the Palm 5 OS. I like having the choice of a built in keyboard or the virtual grafitti screen for input. It also has a wifi card slot. It's actually a CF slot, but there are no drivers out for anything beyond the Sony 802.11 card right now.

There is a new model coming out in a couple months that's $200 more that includes a 2 megapixel camera, autofocus, and a flash. It is the NZ90 model, but it is much thicker and is more than a pocketful, and has only 16mb ram available, which will limit my interest in it.

I use my NX70 for scheduling, contacts, snapping quick pictures (640x480), games, reading email, and shopping lists. I don't use the built in MP3 capabilities at present because I don't have time for messing with it and I prefer the higher fidelity of CDs.

As far as software goes, I have used the alt.binaries.warez.palmpilot newsgroup to try out software to verify if it will work for me, then I buy what I like.

I recommend www.cliesource.com as the best Clie oriented Palm website out there.

If you have any further questions, just let me know.

The Clie is great. I have the T-665C with a slightly smaller display (320X320) and no built-in camera.
I was able to pick it up for $300, with a one year warranty if you register with Sony online. It runs the 4.1 version of Palm, but suffices just fine for all the available features.
Great design, audio capability, good resolution, fast enough performance, and I like the memory stick because it will interface with both my PC-110 camcorder as well as my DSC-85 still digital camera.
Also, MP3 downloads are a snap.
I would also recommend cliesource.com as well as the Osborne book "How to do everything with your Clie".
400 pages covering all models and it was published in Sept. 2002, so it is effective for all models released last year.
Amazon has it for around $17. I also picked up a stylus from Panache. Much better feel, look, and has a built-in reset pin. And a "ThePocketSolution.com" aluminum cover for protection. Although, most favor the thin aluminum cases.

Thinking about the NX70....know of any deals anywhere? Have you seen the Gunmetal case (vs. silver)?
SuperDuty Steve
I bought mine at best buy at 10% off and I got the Best Buy extended warranty.

Their extended warranty says that if you have a problem that is not user abuse, they'll swap it out for a new one over the counter for tow or three years.

Actually, I originally bought a Clie NR70V, the earlier model. I went through 4 of them, and the last time, I swapped it out for the new NX model. It was $599, and I had a 10% off coupon, which was $539. I had paid $509 for my NR70, and paid $32.xx difference to upgrade.

There's a new model coming out in the next couple months, the NZ series, but it's a BRICK. It has a 2 megapixel digital camera with movie mode, autofocus, and flash, but only has 16mb ram and is HUGE.

The gunmetal is still difficult to get. If I had my choice at the same cost, I'd prefer the gunmetal over the silver. Unfortunatley, I understand the only place to get the gunmetal is from the sonystyle website.

Actually, the Sony website is sold out. But was able to buy a gunmetal grey NX-70 from Amazon last week....love it. $599, but for the limited edition I;m happy.

Hi All:

___After a month with the Dell Axim X5, it is everything I could have asked for as far as one of the most performance oriented PDA’s I have had my hands on. The screen is beautiful, the stability is excellent, the performance is great, and the price was outstanding. When the X7 comes around with the wireless features, this will hit E-Bay but in the mean time, $250.00, SPB Plus, WithMP3, ACDSee Mobile, Acrobat Reader, MS Money 03, MS Power Toys, MS Remote Display, the latest MS Windows Media Player, and Everquest for my son to play has made this PDA a dream to own …

Took advantage of the current Dell special offer - 10% off unit and all accessories and a $50 rebate.

Regular $349 less 10% = $314 less $50 Rebate = $264 final price! Sweet!! Also got a spare battery as well as a car charger also 10% off list price. S&H was $10 unfortunately, but all in all a deal I am happy with.

PS: The 10% off is the dreaded "limited time offer" that comes and goes. The current $50 rebate (this is apparently the second) expires 3/31.

The problem was that Sony went High-end with every gee-gaw except a phone, just as the market was looking for Low-end with a phone. The Treo 600 is a good example of what's in demand now... and that's really a good choice from what my friends tell me.

I actually prefer having the phone separate from the PDA so that I can take notes while on the phone.

I have a great Sony Clie with camera, movie camera, audio recorder, mp3 player, tv remote control, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, photo editor, web browser, built-in keyboard, Avant-Go, etc etc.... and of course the usual date book, address book, memo, to do list, and games.

It doesn't make cappuccino though, and there's no "pocket fisherman" included. <sigh> Oh well.
