GARAGE DOOR PROBLEMS WITH MDX - Click HERE for Original Thread

WARNING TO MDX OWNERS------------
The MDX rear door opens to a higher than norman position, that is higher than other SUV type vehicles and vans. My garage has standard single car doors with the opening mechanism centered on the garage door. That garage door opening mechanism WILL STRIKE the MDX door if open while the garage door is operated. The result is a nasty scratch in the paint and the arm of the rear window wiper. We had a GMC Yukon, Dodge Caravan, Montero, Jeep Cherokee and GMC Safari in this same garage position in prior years and never had the problem until last week with our new 2001 Mesa Beige MDX base/navi.

Otherwise, we love our MDX and consider it to be one of the best, if not the best automobile we have ever owned. I must point out we include an 82 BMW 528, a 92 Honda EX Accord, a 95 Acura CL and a 98 Honda V6-EX Accord as well as those cars listed above as having been in "our stable" at one time or another.

Sorry to hear about it. I was concerned about the same thing. What is the maximum height from the ground to the highest point of the rear door when it is opened? And how high is your garage? Thanks.
We previously had a Ford Expedetion in our MDX’s garage spot. The Expedition had the same issue. We had a small scratch on the rear windshield wiper. But the strange part is I’ve checked it a half dozen times in different positions and I have yet to see the MDX tailgate touch the garage door.
dodell: Ohhh man ! Everybody is getting banged up.

Sorry to hear it.
I would be in the ER by now, if that happened to mine.

For those of you that had further questions on my garage door problem, I submit the following data:
My garage has three single car openings 9ft W X 7ft H. Each equipped with a LIFTMASTER opener.
Opening mechanism (as installed) 81.750 inches above floor
Opening mechanism (modified/cutoff)84.375 inches above floor
MDX rear door & wiper blade(OPEN) 85.625 inches above floor

I hope that bringing this to everyones attention will preclude others having the same kind of paint damage. As everyone can see from the above measurements, I can not operate my garage doors while the MDX rear door is the open position even though I have modified/cutoff as much of the mechanism as I can.

We are a lucky bunch of people to own such a fine automoble, the Acura MDX.

One day I was at a store, putting some goods in the rear cargo area. When I closed the liftgate, I was clunked on the head by the rear wiper blade, which had become "limp." It seemed weird, and I took it into the dealer to get fixed. They just tightened the nut that holds the blade on. I had actually read this post prior to the occurrence, but since I didn't notice the blade problem while in my garage, and it seemed to happen out of the blue, I didn't associate the two problems. But after the nut was tightened, I parked my MDX in the garage and opened the liftgate, and it sure looked close. So I gave me husband a warning never to open the garage door while the liftgate was open. Of course, I had a little memory lapse and proceeded to do exactly that about two weeks later - resulting in another limp blade AND a scratch on the paint. Others - be warned! And don't forget!

Still, I love my MDX.

The height of the garage door itself is not the main factor. The height of the horizontal rails off the floor and the distance of the rear of the car to the garage door is a bigger factor.

Also, try backing into the garage if possible.

... is shorter than our old Expedition. The Expy's rear hatch could not be opened in our garage, but thankfuly the MDX's can. This was a very pleasant and much appreciated surprise.

Found this string about the MDX hatch opening too high in a garage fascinating. Not having a garage, my secret if-I-ran-Acura list including having the hatch open higher because every now and again I bump my pumpkin head on the edge (Ok - I'm 6'2" and clumsy). It does make me appreciate the compromises that design teams must make. I bet they have some knock-down drag-out fights of their own.

I don't know if this is the case, but.... if it is the arm of your door opener (the piece that connects the door to the moving sled on your opener) that is hitting the rear door when you open it and the garage is closed, you can try putting a piece of foam pipe insulation around the arm. I've done this in my garage so that when i open the hatch on my outback, it hits foam instead of the metal arm..

I could not get my Expedition 4x4 even close to clearing the garage door. So after some searching and needing a new roll up door anyway, I found this very cool Wayne Dalton Garage Door opener. It is a unique pattented design that turns the torsion bar from the beam above the door opening. Hence there is no opener rail, chain or screwdrive. Your door can than be tracked as high as you would like it. I obtained the whole 7 feet of clearance by doing this. Now the MDX clears easy. Other cool features include rechargeable backup batteries incase of a blackout (very nice here in Cali) and a 10 second delay so you don't have to run like a mad man to get out if on foot.;)

That would ruin fun of watching my wife scamper to get out of the garage only to trip the sensor and cause the door to go back up! :D :D

You all just need to get bigger garages! Also handy if you need to pull the engine... :D

ghost,
Nice height but a little shy on the girth. Where do you park your MDX 'cause it appears the Subaru has got squatters rights on the garage!:D:D

Look again - that's the X parked in the garage! The tailgate's open to show clearance. And the Subaru is parked in front of it (it's a rather long garage too...) :D

The vehicle pictured looked closer to burgandy rather than mercurial silver which is why I mistook it for your Subaru. Guess starlight silver is a misnomer because it sure doesn't shine under the stars!:D:D

What, you guys don't pull your engines? How do you clean behind them?

(oops, guess this belongs in the Detailing thread)

I have 3 separate garage doors and I have a problem when I raise my tailgate. It bangs into the opener rail. I solved the problem by taping some foam.
Twice I have opened the garage door while the tailgate was up. Once my fault, the second time a son in law. I now have a deep scratch running up the back of this black beauty.
I feel your pain.
