I finally test drove the MDX, loved the ride. It has great acceleration. When I first sat in the back seat as my husband did the first test drive, I found the seats somewhat hard, compared to the ML320. But then, I'm not really used to leather seats, since all my cars have had cloth. I've also heard complaints that the leather is not really of quality on the MDX and is subject to early wear and tear.
What have you MDX owners noticed about the leather seating?
I have to say the turning circle of 38 feet was very good, and the MDX is totally roomy. Even though I wish it had side air bags for the rear passengers like the ML320.
We've been waiting since November for a Silver/Touring, I hope it'll be worth the wait. I really want something that is fun to drive.

I'm waiting for my MDX also. Ordered Nov. Haven't test driven one yet. Anyway, re: seats. FYI... An alternative to sitting on the leather is sheepskin seats. http://superlamb.com/product/index.htm have made seats for all our cars. If you visit the link, you notice they have the headrests and everything covered and looks a little "much". We just cover the seat and back...leave the headrest natural and back seats natural. I can assure you that they are extremely comfy. I think they're an extra $3-500 for a pair of front seat covers. I understand they've already done some MDX's and have the pattern. They ship all over the world. One of the nice things for me is they tend to hug me and keep me in the seat so I don't have that feeling of sliding. I'm small...so this helps. My husband (much larger) loves them also. They're located here in San Diego. I'll be investigating this option when/if my truck ever gets here! |

Dmor,
I am a bit surprised that you would buy a $40K vehicle without a test drive. My sincere advice to you is to go find a dealer in San Diego and drive one. Since your first dealer messed up the order, talking to another one is fair game. You also mentioned that you are short - excuse me vertically challenged, so seat configuration will be an issue. I have never and will never order or purchase a vehicle that I have not driven first. Even those that the car mags have raved about like the MDX. For the record, I did not order my MDX from the dealer where both my wife and I test drove one.
Also would the sheepskin seat covers potentially counteract the bun warmers that are standard on the MDX? Granted, in San Diego, posterior warmth may not be essential but we folks here in Chicago and other cold climates appreciate this creature comfort. |

Hi Remery!
I will test drive mine when it comes in, before I buy it. It's not so much my height that's a problem...but I don't pack much weight, so I tend to slide...or feel like it anyway.
I don't know about the seat warmers in the MDX, but we had warmers in our MBZ (rarely used them) and they worked through the sheeps just fine. You should check out those sheeps! I believe the ones for the MDX cover only the center back to allow for the airbags. But for those who feel the lumbar is out of place, etc., the sheepskins make all the difference in the world. I used to order them from SoCal when I lived in Michigan (Brrrr). Now, they're about as standard for us as installing LoJack.

Dmor,
May have a potential problem with the sheeps. We own a Great Pyrenees. This type of dog was bred to guard flocks of sheep. If we put those things on the seats we would never be able to get the dog out of the MDX!! |

| :D Very cute! We have a Maltese or compact version (with a seat belted doggie harness to keep him safe). |

Dmor,
Just was doing some surfing and it appears that a dealer outside New Orleans claims they have a Mahogany MDX. New Orleans is nice this time of year so you and the hubby might want to go down there and car shop! Would be surprised if the MDX is as hot a seller in Louisiana as it is in Southern California. I am in no hurry for my Mahogany MDX otherwise I would check it out myself. The dealer is at: http://www.walkeracura.com.
By the way, you actually have a car seat for the pooch? I guess it must be a small dog owner thing!! |
|
|

Actually, that should be seatbelt for animals. We use this one:
http://www.ruffrider.com/shop/
Great for the backseat in a sedan, esp with leather seats. You can cut enough slack to let the dog stand, pace -- or, you can have it tight for sit/down only.
Haven't tried it in the cargo area of the MDX -- not sure what to attach it to -- you need something fixed, but detachable (aka seatbelt). Probably could use a slip-knot with a short leash or leader if you can loop it through a cargo hook.
I still haven't hooked up the seperation net, but from a safety perspective, "the animal" (as we call her) is better off with the seatbelt. |

Hi Worm
Glad to hear your a responsible pet owner!! We use a similar device for our 13 pound Maltese. It's basically a standard body harness design, with a reinforced chest strap, ring for the leash (tags, etc) and a strap (back loop) for running the seat belt through. He doesn't leave home without it! Hops in the center back...on the goosedown pillow...and prepares for blast off. He even whines if we put the car into gear before slipping the belt through his harness. This was one of my better purchases...outside of the MDX of course.
But when he was a baby puppy...I actually had a specially adapted car seat with a little restraining strap inside of it...because like all kids, he wanted to see out the window!
I have pangs of RoadRage when I see people driving with lose pets...or kids. Obviously, restraining either in your arms is futile in the event of an accident. There's little excuse for the oversight.
Here's some links I found for anyone with critters:

http://www.caninefriendly.com/
http://www.seatbeltsfordogs.com/
Think I'll post parts of this in the accessory link...pretty important stuff! |

| I reposted over there, too. Our dog (Golden, 70lbs) actually likes the harness. It, too, was a solid purchase decision. |

Mahogany MDX
Funny, I was just at my dealer yesterday (Valencia Acura) having some accessories put on... and they have a Mahogany MDX w/Nav that they use as their company "taxi".

A dealer taxi? Ugh...NOT funny...'til I get mine! |

| Hey that doggie harness looks like a good idea. My 100 lb. Chocolate Lab (Brodie) doesn't travel that much in the car (but he can get me a beer out of the fridge..honestly!). Anyway, I guess it would keep him from flyin around the car in an accident or crawlin' over the seats and getting them muddy! What's the best one for a 100lb 'er? |

Check out the accessorie section...there's a bunch of links under Paws 'n Claws. My husband wants your dog. :) |

Dancall,
We really like the ruffrider. Haven't tried the others. As I mentioned in the Accessories thread this one had the best rating/review (of several "dog seatbelts") in a mag I was reading @ the vet's office. Their sizes go up to 120 or 150. Again, we've been really happy with it. |

Heck, for the price of a good set of HIDs you could just have new, thick, soft, custom leather slapped into your new MDX...$2500 and a bargain at that.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

I have read all the griping about the seats. I however have a different opinion. I've had my MDX since Dec 1 and have put 5500 miles on it including many many 200 miles in one shot trips.
I also travel on business and have rented over a dozen different make/models in the past year.
I had back surgery two and half years ago to repair a herniated disk and can tell you which seats give good posture and support the back and which don't.
The MDX seats are great. Period. My back feels fine after a 200 mile trip - it doesn't in many other cars I drive. In fact, in most cars I have to take a short break every hundred miles and stretch my back to ease the pain they give me.
I believe, the griping I'm reading about the MDX seats is the fact the they force you to assume a good posture position and for many of us, we aren't used to it. I believe the seats are in fact good for you.
Other opinions are always welcome. |

I must echo MesaBeige's comments. I am baffled by this discussion regarding the "uncomfortable" seats. I find them extremely comfortable even over long periods (I drive around a lot taking my kids to their activities). I think the lumbar support is great. I love the leather. It is much nicer than the leather in my Chrysler minivan. I think the driving position is awesome. Now, maybe this is because I am not what you would call a large-displacement individual. Maybe the MDX fits me really well, or maybe I have good posture! Either way I do love the seats. Claire

Speaking of seats... In the owners manual it says to sort of "pump" the lumbar a couple of times to get it to move through its full range. The lumbar on my MDX seems to move through its range based on where you leave the lumbar knob. What's everyone elses experience? |

I bought mine at Walker Acura in New Orleans last November. They seem to have no shortage of MDX's down here. I was just in there last week to get my back ordered running boards installed (Man! they're great! it changed the look of the whole vehicle, made all the "aerodynamic lines" flow together).
At any rate, I saw a fine looking Mahagony unit sittin' on the lot ready to go. I've posted on this site previously about available MDX's in NOLA. The dealer told me thay have sold 13 units this Feb alone!
Ya'll come on down to Mardi Gras and get your MDX's! |

| Hey Boomer, if I didn't already have mine, I'd be on my way! Man do I miss New Orleans (..went to Tulane). I haven't been back since '83 YIPES! ..but I can smell those 'Mudbugs' a boilin'. (sorry for the off topic post). |

| Well...checked with my husband about the Mahogany MDX in New Orleans. Sounds good, but he has a habit of losing cars down there after visiting Pat O'brien's. 1967...Sugar Bowl...had 6 coveted tix...left in glove box...group partied at Pat O's...couldn't find car...reported it stolen...excorted next day by New Orlean's finest...found it right where they'd parked it. Duh...Got Aspirin? But he's willing to trade the untouched tix...think they'll go for it? :) Maybe this happens after weathering a series of Hurricanes? |
