Hi All:

___Given the great deals to be found on Laptops and very HQ wall mountable PC LCD screens nowadays, I am thinking of running a drop down (I haven’t figured out the drop down solution just yet but I am thinking about it …) 15” – 17” SXGA/UXGA LCD screen via RGB or DVI from a Radeon 9000 equipped Laptop. I simply can’t stand the low quality, simplistic, and expensive 16:9 AR 5” – 8” screens with at best VGA resolutions for $1,000 - $2,000 + installed. No one in their right mind would watch a DVD at these screen sizes and resolutions on a home setup or even their own Personal Computer if they could help it. Given R_Steven’s post about his superlative sound solution using Boston Acoustics Z6 references in his X and MDXtrous’ installers group buy on the RCA jacked to head unit cabling, you can have a truly kick A$$ 2-channel audio as well as a high res Hi-Def video solution with the Radeon powering up one of these LCD’s. This type of visual solution would rival many HQ Projector based Home Theater setups in terms of quality (not size of course). I don’t think the Boston solution is cost effective for most at an MSRP of $2,000 + for the speakers alone but there are possibly lesser cost speaker solutions that could hit maybe 90% of what he has installed for maybe $500 - $750 on the sound side of the equation yet you would still own something truly worth listening too. Some of the decent quality Samsung LCD’s even have built in PIP NTSC/PAL TV tuners within their bezels if someone can figure out how to get the antennae wired through the MDX properly. I don’t need to go into a 16:9 AR DT or pixel perfect resolutions in this thread as it’s not a complete technology demonstration but simply a discussion about What if?

___My thoughts should really be along the lines of asking the simple questions first. For those that have a DVD RES solution installed; whether that is a Honda OEM solution in the 03 Pilot or a custom job in an 01/02 MDX, how does the small screen hanging down effect your rear view of the road from the rear view mirror? Is their a practical and/or legal limit for how far these drop down screens hang down or are they already blocking the rear view? If they are blocking the rear view already, a larger and much higher quality display is not going to hurt anyone in this regard, correct? Secondly, is their room for a well shielded RGB or DVI cable under the head liner so it will not show?

___As for myself, I can make these SXGA/UXGA LCD screens sing with a 0 IRE scope calibrated output from the Radeon with a Sonic based decoder that would make everyone’s jaw drop as far as the visuals from the back of the X while watching DVD’s. SuperBits in particular would be absolutely fantastic … It’s hiding the RGB cabling and the drop down size limits and carrier solution that have me wondering if this is feasible at this point in time. I could easily create a 5.1 or even 7.1 DD/DTS sound output solution from many laptops but w/ 60 + dB of ambient while tooling down the road at 60 mph +, the side effects as well as the center channel will be drowned out so as to make this not a truly HQ solution audio solution IMHO. 2-Channel however is already very workable with what I have read in the last few days …

___My basis for building the absolute highest quality visuals come from my experience as a Moderator over at AVScience’s Home Theater Computer forums if anyone is wondering.

___Please feel free to add anything that may be helpful for those that may be interested … or simply let this thread die on the vine since it is probably not yet ready for prime time anyway. If I could get together with those guys (Ron S.?) from Street-Effects?, we could really do something special with this :D

___Good Luck to you all.

WAYNE: You need your X RIGHT now!! I hope with all the gadgetry in the passenger seat that you don't go crashing it in the first week. :( Heck I had trouble with the nav screen and that is right in front of me. Give me your dealers number and I will call him for you. I am guessing you are having trouble sleeping these days. I know I did before I got mine. I feel for you. BTW that post would have taken me at least an hour.
