At 1200 miles I started to get a squeak from the driver's side rear suspension. Everything looked ok, but the squeak got louder & louder. Turns out the rear shock blew out & the other one didn't look too good either. So I got a pair of new shocks. Dealer said that wasn't the first time he had seen that happen.
While I'm there the dealer installs a new water pump & timing belt, as my VIN was under a recall notice.
Can't wait for 2500 miles! |

Shocks have not been discussed much on this forum. |

| Keep a close eye on your power steering belt pulley wheel. Several of us that have had this recall done (MDX & Pilots) have had power steering failures. Hope all stays well for you. |

Back from the dead!
I've seen a rear shock leaking maybe half a dozen times. Once caught it on a brand new PDI. There has been so much concern over problems with the front dampers on early '01s, that this defect got overlooked.

I just wanted to post a note to let you know that my rear shocks went too at about 16,000 miles (8 months old). It was rather disappointing since I consider the car fairly new. The dealer said that he had seen this problem with a few 'X's (great :( ). Anyway, I'm seriously considering the extended warranty purchase now!

Could this be caused by shocks? I just took my MDX in for 15K service, and got it back with a slight shimmey/ vibration in wheel, and a vibrating ride (hard to explain!). Acura does not "feel it" and are dismissing me. Sometimes it vibrates so bad you can actually see it!
Any advice? |

| I always thought of shocks as normal wear items. Of course, 15.000 is a bit soon for sure. I would say a good set of shocks rarely goes beyond 40,000 miles, if even that far. |

What are the symptoms of bad rear shocks ? Did you notice squeaking as reported in prior post ? How does one know if they've got the defective rear shocks ? Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. |

Leaks on the outside of the shocks are a definite sign. Noise can be a symptom but may only be a bushing needing a squirt of silicone spray.
If the vehicle keeps bouncing after traversing a speed hump that is a good indication of bad shocks.
These are gas loaded shocks so bouncy behavior may not be quite as noticeable by standing on the bumper.
But if you compare it with a new vehicle it should be very apparent.
More lean in turns and a longer time to retun to normal are signs. But you can try standing on a bumper (not easily done with painted bumpers) and start causing the vehicle to bounce with leg motion.
A hard bounce should settle within 1 1/2 cycles. |
