Replacing trip comp with oem Nav... - Click HERE for Original Thread

I had just called my dealer to ask about replacing the trip computer with the oem nav system. They indicated that it would not be possible without completely re-wiring the vehicle. From the other thread that I read, this seems to be a topic of conflict without a clear cut answer.

Obviously it can be done however at what expense. My service dept indicated that a rough estimate to complete the job would be around 6k.

Any thoughts to this from my fellow MDX owners??

'01 Silver w/ Touring (w/o Nav), Fender trim, side bars, hitch, sunroof visor, rear wind deflector, mud flaps, winter mats, cargo cover. 1st car to arrive at Los Gatos Acura, CA.

'01 Beige w/ Touring and Nav, body colored fender trim, side bars, rear wind deflector, mud flaps, winter mats. 5th car to arrive at Los Gatos Acura, CA (I bought this for my mom)

Allan,

That was my estimate as well. The hardware alone (NOT including Tims discount) is around $4000-4500.

You need the DVD player, Display, harnesses, GPS antenna, misc, LOT OF TIME for a QUALIFIED tech to revise the harness to look like a factory nav.

I've pawed through the service manual to get a sense of how "deep" the Nav versus No-Nav vehicles differ. It is NOT plug n play.

And what does this buy you?

A gutted subset of the Alpine NAV system. Cheaper to sell the MDX, take a 3 k loss, buy the 2k factory Nav.

Sucks, doesn't it?

Besides, with the short supply scenario you may not lose all that much. Maybe a grand, and then who knows you may not lose anything at all. If an MDX is available for sale right away (provided you don't have a lot of miles on it and its in perfect condition) someone might even pay full price for it!!!!
vicpai,

I totally agree.

My point in posing a "$3k loss" was to point out the futility of upgrading to a factory Nav. It really make little sense- and that's the part that sucks.

Of course, if we were to build an MDX simply from the parts counter, we'd spend $200k for it. (As is probably the case for all vehicles.)

TRUE...and besides the Navigation system is such a GREAT device (I've used it for around 9 months in my 2000 3.2TL until it got stolen 2 months back) that I would'nt mind taking a greater loss to get an "ORIGINAL" one factory installed, and there's always risks associated with aftermarket installations that they may not work as promised - especially something as complex as a GPS system ;)
All I can say is, BEST of LUCK.

(and, thank God I got the NAVI in the first place)
