Thanks a lot, American Honda, for making me look like an arse. But, good things are coming of it anyways.

I just received word that the stainless side steps WILL be available in mid-December from American Honda, contrary to what they told me last week. I'll have pricing later today hopefully.
JTM
Sounds GOOD.

This give 'Xers have more choices.

Hmmm I think there might be somethingk wrong with my sidesteps. :)

Thanks for the update, Tim. If these are priced even close to the current ones then I am interested. Stainless sounds perfect!

Here's the official communique:

The 2003 MDX Chrome-Finished Side Steps are scheduled to be available in mid-December 2002. The new Side Steps share the same design as the Black Side Steps (P/N 08L33-S3V-200F) and are plated in a lustrous, bright chrome finish.

Apparently these steps will have a retail price of $625.00. My price on them once they become available is 487.50, shipping included of course :) . They have a scheduled availability date of 12/5.

Yes yes I just checked something definantly wrong with my sidesteps.......

Hi Tim:

___Thanks for the update … The only problem is that I am almost ready for all the stuff to be shipped and I have to keep changing my mind :) Ok, Manik’s. Nahh, that isn’t the ticket. Ok Acura and Powder coat. That’s it, WooHoo! Ok Acura Chrome is now finally available … I think I will go with? I don’t know what I will go with

___Thanks for the update.

Oh, man! I just put the Manik on last night. For $100 more I definitely go for Acura's one. Give me some stories to return the Manik. It looks good anyway. The new ones come with the plastic steps intalled so I don't see the problem with missed alignment and cracked.
N_Jay
Are the MDX and Pilot side steps the same.
Seems the wheelbase is, and the mounting points should be?

So, are these chrome over aluminum?
DUBYA123
Nice timing I was about to run out and get the maniks, thanks alot..:D

They should have fixed that problem by now. Check closely and see if the steps are screwed all the way down. But don't over torque them, they will crack!
If they wont go all way down without catching the edge of the mounting hole, you can remove them and elongate the pad hole with a drill.
Right now you probably feel like saying, oh well, they are not cracked I don't want to bother.
But once they start getting some use they will crack if they are not totally flush against the SS bar.
If you do remove any, there is a spring clip around a post in the center. You just have to wiggle the step off, don't lose the spring retainer.

I hate to sound like I don't know who, but why do you guys need sidesteps? I'm 5'7" and I don't have no problem at all getting in and out of X. Is it just for the look? Or maybe I feel spoiled after selling my Trooper (MDX is definitely lower). In either case the CHOICE IS GOOD, so please don't blame me for my thoughts. Thanks Tim for keeping us all happy.
purdue1
Miro,
Sidesteps are mainly for kids, elderly and LOOK. My 2 years old son always want to climb up to his car seat by himself and he'll cry if we help him. He's been doing OK with the Camry but I don't think he can do it for the MDX plus my wife doesn't want his coat get dirty rubbing agaisnt the MDX during winter time. BTW, the Manik's steps guard perfectly against the Camry front door.
Mushman
I have to agree with Purdue1.

My 2 year old son (soon to be 2) also refuses to be carried into the truck. He has to climb in. Same with my 3 year old daughter.

My parents also use it a lot. Plus, I think it adds great looks to the side profile of the X.

One funny thing. I never realized how much I use it as well. I am 6 feet tall and really don't need it.

I was in my cousin's MDX last week and he does NOT have the side bars. When I came out of the truck, I just assumed I was getting out of mine and almost fell to the floor. I think, unknowingly, I was looking for the steps. Would have been funny but thank god nobody saw me. I would have never heard the end of it.

Of course, the decision is yours, but great for kids and elderly. Also, helped me a lot over the past year and a half with a back injury I had.
DaleB
My thoughts, if you need them for assisting others to get in, they are there.
I would not have bought them if I did not think it would customize the looks some. I like the look, besides having a function.
Handy for checking out grid-locked traffic situations, or if you parked too far from the curb and/or want to avoid stepping in a puddle.

I guess you have a point when you talk about kids trying to climb in. I guess my 3.5 years daughter doesn't have any problem because she had a training with the Trooper which I replaced with MDX.

God Damnit!!! Great just great...Thanks Honda for your hush hush attitude...It is this that purchasing your product is such a G DAMN CHOICE! Geezus!!! Ease up on your stealthy attitude...its a vehicle not a G DAMN Government arsenal!!

Well looks like I have to swap out my Maniks.

I just got my '03 MDX Touring yesterday.

I hope for a group buy on the '03 Touring wheel. :2:

What will you do with the Maniks, just dump them? Or foist them upon some innocent MDX owner?

Dale-

*sigh* I honestly don't know...Now with the stainless steel OEM steps from Acura..I think I may have a difficult time selling it. I don't know...I will have to wait to see what the OEM steps really look like up close before I really do anything.

Yup, when I saw TheWorm's powder-coated Acura steps close-up I was very impressed. The Acura steps are a wide oval bar and look good with a metallic finish.
Now they will even be more shiny! I would imagine the shape would not change.

Tim:

Expecting my X sometime during the 2nd week of Dec. As I mentioned to you previously I'll be ordering a bunch of stuff from you, including the new SS sidesteps. Timing looks like it's perfect for me. I'll be in touch as soon as my dealer has my VIN #.

Maybe a bull bar from Acura is next. Even Saturn has one! As hokey as it looks.

Many of you are probably skeptical, but I would not be surprised if Acura reads this forum.
mauigrl721
Tim--I asked my dealer last weekend about these and they hadn't heard anything. Will the info. be reaching dealers across the country soon? Thanks

I noted your British spelling of "arse." I was wondering if "arse" is pronounced phonetically. Seems kinda awkward, if so. Plus, what are all those "curling rinks" I saw passing through Canada. Is it a hair salon, or a body building gym?

Am I joking? No. May appear to be a stupid question, but I just want to know for sure!

:8:

They say you're only stupid if you don't ask. Not sure of that.
hondacuraworld
"Arse" can also be used as a slightly more polite version I guess. Pronounced just as it looks, less hard hitting then "ass" ;) . Aside from that, five years of working for a British car line, you pick up a few things, like the phrase "anti-clockwise", and such.......

The dealers all received parts bulletins on the upcoming side steps. Tell your dealer to check their emails.

And "curling" is that weird sport where people throw that heavy stone that looks like a carpet scrubber down the ice, and two people polish the ice in front of it to make it speed up/slow down. You can see it on the Winter Olympics.

Thanks for the update Tim. I wish they were brushed stainless (WOW!:10: ) but I guess this is close enough. Hmm...just in time for the holidays. Tim, any chance of a Dec. special on these? Maybe not as shipping might be expensive. Well...it can't hurt to ask, right?:D

Hi Tim,

I am wondering whether you ship accessories to Canada.

Thanks.

I expect to get my MDX '03 early in Dec. I think it is the most polyvalent SUV in the market.

You might be close enough to stop in and pick up your merchandise too. We're about 15 minutes from the Peace Bridge, just south of Buffalo.

Had to look polyvalent up. Thanks for the education!

Mike,

Ooops.. Did I change my name? it is j T m, not jim.

BTW, if you are close to Tim, just go pick it up from him. He gave 10% discount for the store/shop pick up.

Hi Tim, as a native Scot I know your cultural language problems. Anyway I'm waiting to see if the state of Ca. will issue the plates I requested (BUGR OFF), if not I'll think of something else. If anyone is interested I can provide you with translations of Tim's (im)polite british vocabulary. Slange!

You might try BGGR OFF, not as obvious....:D

With something like P*SS OFF you wouldn't stand a chance!

Hmm, I wonder how a gentleman got away with the plate "RICHPHKR" on his Rolls Royce?

Think I'll just get SUCKRR. I just left the dealer $50.00 lighter for a cargo net. They sure do see you coming.

Well, I'm not from the UK, I'm just used to using the phraseology, mostly in writing. I usually sign my emails, "Cheers".

A copy of Oor Wullie can bring anyone up to speed on Scot speak :)

Interesting thread, even with all the ziggage and zaggage.

I'm considering putting on side steps and you can help with some first-hand experience. After all I wouldn't want to spend 500 of Mrs. Nut's hard-earned clams without making a well-informed decision.

Some of you have mentioned the practicality of the steps, but how do they compare to running boards? Are the boards easier or better to use? Can they actually help prevent door dings? After a period of use has anyone noticed areas of wear that might corrode? That sort of thing.

After knowing more about their function, I can decide the form, i.e., Acura chrome vs. powder coat vs. Manik, and so on.

Then later, whoever puts on the new chrome steps (I too wish they were stainless steel), please post some pictures so we can see them on both light and dark colored MDXs.

Thanks in advance.

I like the Maniks and the powder-coated Acrua steps.
The biggest tradeoffs are ease of installation and cost. The Maniks are a breeze to install and are less expensive. They have some flex which I don't really notice unless I make it a point to bounce on them. The foot pads on the Acura are superior.
The Acruas are very stable but make a subtle statememt. I have not seen the new chrome or SS Acrua side steps.I am sure they will be a hot seller, and probably what I would get if I did not already have Maniks.
None of these will stop dents in my opinion. But the Maniks project more from the side, and are a psychological deterrent.
When parked next to a Manik adorned MDX, it looks like if you swing your door too wide it will hit the step, or in some way restrict the allowable space in exiting your vehicle.
I have had more than one person relate that very impression to me.
So far I don't have door dings, but spend time in parking lots hunting for the best spots to protect my X, which I believe is the primary reason.
