If anyone knows the speaker sizes for the Touring Package (or Base) system, please list as I'm considering switching out the speakers.
I'd like to start looking for some good, excuse me, awesome speakers, what kind of deals have others been getting? |

There are a lot of things to consider in doing a car audio upgrade. First if you are not changing the head unit do not expect your upgraded to sound geat like magic. There have been times were upgrading just the oem speakers to aftermarket speakers were actally detrimental to the overall sound due to the fact that these oem head units and speakers were designed to work together. The oem speakers are attached to an oem amplifier. I do not know if the oem head unit has rca outs but if it does then you're in luck because you can get some aftermarket amps with built in crossovers to to have a more flexible cut off frequency. The supplied passive crossovers that came with it are good but it might not be enough. The front speakers from what I gather from my local installation shop was that they are 6.5 but of course you are not limited to this size. A good shop can squeeze in an 8 inch if you want to. If you are looking for some better lower frequency reponse(bass) there are a number of brands that have mini subs that come in a 6.5. Since the oem came with seperates you should stick with that, plus it is a more flexible option when it comes to installation choices, of course coaxial are a more of a single point source drivers, but since the speakers are in the door that would not matter, you are better off with the seperates that can cost anything from $ 199.00 to $ 800.00. This depends in your preference of what type of music you listen to and what sound you prefer. The subs varies depending where it came from. They could range between 9.5 to an actual 10 depending on the oem supplier. If you want to stay with the stock locations you are very limited with your choices. There are only a few subs out there that can fit on this size of enclosure. Try Kickers, JL Audio, USD to name a few ($199 -$350). If you are going with a custom enclosure then you have a few hundred choices out there. Your amplifier choices here might be limited only because you want a small enough amplifier to fit on the limited space you have in the MDX unless you don't care loosing cargo space. Remember one thing you might have the best equipment that money can buy but if the equipment is not installed right then you are better off with your stock system. Speaker placement is the most critical part of any installation. Even a $ 200.00 speaker will sound better if installed correctly compared to an $ 800.00 speaker if installed in a what ever fashion. All in all if you want to replace the speakers replace the front ones and the subs I would keep the rear speakers alone first to see if it will be adequate enough since they are mainly used for rear fills. If you decide to change it then do it after they install the front speakers and subs but before they finish the installation. If they finish the installation before you audition it they they will charge you more labor to install the rear speakers if you decide to change them. For amps get a multiple channel for the front and rear and a single amp (mono would be better if you will be driving just one sub)to yield a cleaner over all sound.
Front speakers: $ 199.00 - $ 850.00 (avg - 300.00 - 400.00 for a good set of Boston Acoustics or MB Quartz (hi-end speakers)
4 & 2 Channel Amp: $ 300.00 - $ 2,000.00 some good hi-end brand includes PPI,MTX,Xtant,Zapco,Kicker,Phoenix Gold,JL Audio,Rockford Fostgate
10' Subs and up: $ 150.00 - $ 600.00 some good hi-end that requires minimum air space are: JL Audio, Kicker,MTX,Rockford Fostgate,USD to name a few.

I haven't gotten my MDX yet, but am thinking about putting some old (few years) Boston Acoustics in.
From what I gather, the speaker sizes are:
Front and REaer 6.5
Subs - 10
What about the Tweeters?
I've got 4 6.5's, 2 of them with 1 inch tweeters.
thanks.

| I tried to do this while back ago and found out BOSE system uses 2-ohm speakers while all aftermarket speakers are 4-ohm units.(or something like that) You will need to replace your amp as well which then defeats the purpose of getting the Bose system in the 1st place. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm getting the base, not the Touring package.

For the base model you're in luck these are 4 ohm units and can be easily upgraded. Of course if you want sounds with a little more ooomph, you will need hi-low pass converters to hook up to aftermarket amps unless you get one of the amps that have this feature built in already. I took my MDX apart and have pictures including pictures that I took a measuring tape to show the depth and width of the doors and side panels for the subs. I suspect the speaker sizes on both the base and Touring are the same.
Front speakers-- 6.5 + tweeter on pod(tweeter pod
fit up to maybe a 1.5 or even a 2)
Rear speakers(doors)-- 5.25 (suprised on this one I
it was a 6.5)
Side Panel(subs) 10'
I'll have the exact dims for mounting depth on the speakers. Also the Bose includes a rear center channel weird, I suspect there must be a big "hole" in the in-car frequency response of the speakers if the rear center was deleted. I planned out the DVD, CD aftermarket head unit with full aftermarket speakers and 2 10' sub installation already. The headunit will also be running a disc changer. Still have to check rear clearance for the space below the coin tray and Bose unit for the head unit installation. This will definitely require some fiberglass and bondo work. The panel will be trimmed in Black piano lacquer. My headunit of choice will be a Panasonic DVD, CD player with the built in swing away center channel speaker. Front speakers will be Boston Acoustics Pr0 6.5 seperates. Rear will be treated with a 6.5 Boston Acoustics also. Lows will be handled by 2 10 JL Audio 10W3. The sub enclosure will be made with a combination of MDF and fiberglass and will be a removable unit. The box will be moulded into the rear cargo hatch. The 3rd row head rests will be relocated underneath the 2nd row seat via custom retainers. All speakers will be handled by JL Audio amps. One 4 channel and 1 2 channel. Still debating if I will put in a 8 inch DEI 8' mini sub in the front. Need to look for space to house the enclosure. The video will be handled by the navi screen for the front via a source switcher and the rear will get either a Clarion, Panasonic 7' flipdown monitor. The stock Bose headunit which I can not take out due to the navi will be retained and one of the front seperates will be installed in the passenger kick panel via custom kick pane pods for the navi voice guides. As you see the stock headunits will be independent of the aftermarket one. I will have to design a swithcher so I can switch between the two headunits to run the aftermarket gear but that will take awhile. I am also looking into installing an EQ system and install it inside the side panel where the oem sub resides. The amps will hopefully fit underneath the 3rd row seats I checked this area and it looks like it will. I might not even have to run a fan but I probably will and it will be the speed variable type--temperature activated. I will also be including a PS2, and a VHS player also for the rear passengers. I'll get pics as soon as I start the work on the system. I'm trying to get all the equipment together. I'm planning to get the installation done by next year. I will end up probably installing most of the system myself if not all unless I get a good deal on the installation since I get get the hardware for less than retail. |
