Additional Steering Wheel Buttons Installed - Click HERE for Original Thread

I was debating whether to post a separate thread for new steering wheel buttons I've added to my A/V setup. I had already posted this in "My Video Install" thread. But then I thought, this would be more easily referenced and found in searches in the future.

Well, here it is...

Hello All,

Thanks to VideoNavi's creativity, Ron was able to add 6 more steering wheel buttons to control my A/V system.

This was made possible by an item made by Peripheral Electronics called PESWIX. You can find the link here at:

http://peripheralelectronics.com/2002/steering.asp

It normally is used so that the factory steering wheel buttons can be used for an aftermarket Head Unit. I don't have a new head unit, but this device also provides a resistor network, that allows you to add additional buttons. Given different resistance levels, the device generates IR signals learned from any IR remote and repeats the IR signal when a button is pressed.

VideoNavi first did this and I thought it would be a good addition. This prevents me from having to juggle with a remote and look down on a remote when driving. Those who own aftermarket head units and A/V systems in their Xs will understand what I mean.

Here's a pic of the device. It cost around $49.95. I already forget where I got it, but I first searched Google.com for it.

Next thing was going out and finding the right buttons. Per VideoNavi's suggestion, I got 6 of these pushbuttons from Radio Shack for $1.99 each.

Here's the link for it:

VideoNavi had glued his buttons onto the screw holes on the back of the existing steering control boxes (left for radio, and right for cruise control) for a total of 4 holes/4 buttons. But Ron didn't like the idea as much, since if the boxes would have to be taken out, the buttons would have to be reglued.

So we decided on three locations. These are all on the steering wheel, but are removable tabs to gain access to the airbag. If these ever need replacing, it's just ordering that part and that's it. Nothing that permament.

Well, we therefore settled on 6 buttons, two on the left, two on the right and two on the bottom.

The device learns the IR signals from different remotes, so I decided to have 3 buttons for the TV Tuner, and 3 for the DVD player. The resistor network went from 0 Ohms to 2000 Ohms. The factory provided 5, and there is a possibility of adding more, but you need to make sure the resistance is not too close to the factory ones.

So for the bottom buttons I have bottom left -> TV Tuner Power, bottom right -> DVD Power, for the left buttons I have TV/Video switch and TV channel +, for the right buttons I have DVD Eject, and DVD Play. This accounts for maybe 80% of the functions I need on a day-to-day basis. I may try to add 4 more in the future which would cover 98% of all my needs, such as FF, RR, etc.... but it's definitely a great addition for now. Keeps my eyes on the road.

Anyway here are some pics:

Wheel turned to the left a bit to show right buttons and bottom buttons. Notice how they sit on removable plastic tabs...

See how they are pretty accessible without me taking my hands off the wheel...

Here's where Ron installed the IR transmitter... (notice the dot) It works just like a remote control.

The DVD remote eye was moved a bit to be in the direct line of sight of the transmitter.

This is the dedicate backup camera image before I hit the TV/Video button (It's on Video 2).

When I press the TV/Video button to switch to TV, the TV image appears...

I push it once more and it brings me to Video 1, which switches to DVD.

Well, that's it for my steering wheel button posts. It's a really useful enhancement that provides convenience and safety from not having to take out the remotes out of the center console and figuring out what the functions are on the remote.

We're looking into whether we can add 4 more buttons. Will keep you posted

Did VideoNavi post his directions somewhere? I can't seem to find it here or on the TL forums.

You'll find it on the Odyclub. VideoNavi owns an Odyssey and an LS430.

I was wondering if that PESWIX doesn't just work on the steering wheel. I was wondering if it would work on the back of the center console on the 2003 Honda Pilot!

I don't see why not. You should be able to add buttons anywhere as long as you can hook it up to the transmitter box.
