lazy seatbelts damage trim - Click HERE for Original Thread

Has anyone experienced their seatbelts been too slow to return? I have noticed this on cars that are 4 or 5 years old where the belt returns very slowly to its retracted position and sometimes fails to. It seems to me that the mdx (at least mine) belts don't have enough tension to return efficiently, problem is the metal clip jams in between the frame and the door and damages the soft trim just below the window to the point that it has ripped parts of it and i had to have the passenger and driver trims already replaced, notice this has not occurred to me on any other car since the trims have not been as soft, the door simply doesn't close shot and a second attempt (after moving the belt out of the way) closes it without damage.
I've noticed a similar situation on my MDX and '99 Accord, and particularly on my old '89 Accord (which ended up having numerous little rips to the side of the door).

I think it's a Honda thing. I've also noticed that part of the reason for my slow retrieval is that the actual belt develops a twist or fold right before the hanger (the part where the belt changes directions, I can't think of a better name for it). But, I've noticed that adjusting the height of the belt pivot position (on the side of the car) does make it (slow retrieval) happen less frequently.

All else fails, I'm more conscience of the slow retrieval, so at times I watch and make sure it retracts all the way, helping it if I need to.

while we're talking about seat belts...

I have a reoccurring problem whereby the seat belt gets twisted and jammed in the slot in the silver latch thing. And, then the latch thing doesn't slide up and down the belt making it really tough to adjust around my waste. And, then its really difficult to get it untwisted and unjammed. You need to yank on it with all your might and pull it out. Annoying
I've had the same problem with my driver's side seat belt on my MDX. The dealer has ordered a new one. We'll see if this helps.

I, too, have this seat belt problem. I try to avoid damage by holding on to the seat belt when I take it off and ease it back to its proper position.

Not a big deal, just a little nusiance.

We had the exact same problem (seatbelt doesn't retract and metal clip gets caught b/w the door and jamb putting ugly dings in trim) on our 1999 Lexus RX300 (please hold off on the boos and hisses) - so I don't think it is a Honda/Acura thing. What I have noticed on the RX300 though is that when the seat is moved forward (for a shorter driver) there is less room for the seatbelt to slide between the seat and jamb and the seatbelt can get caught-up on the cover for the seat's side impact air bag cover. I don't know yet whether the MDX suffers the same fate. We are still waiting for delivery of ours :(
Same deal on 95 Blazer, didn't notice this for the first 3 years, since I didn't wear seatbelt. After a couple of tickets, I began using seatbelt and it became very irritating. I was hoping it was a Blazer thing, but sounds like I will be irritated as well in a 40K vehicle.:(
