Does anyone have any experience with the HID or Xenon-Like bulbs everyone is selling on EBAY? I love the Xenons on my BMW and would like the look without the hassel or expense of the HID install. Any comments?

Learn to use the "search" feature on this site. I did a search for "HID" a month ago and still have not had time to read all the threads that came up.

Following is one thread you will find interesting:

Don't bother with them.

I bought a set and the bulb melted in 2 weeks. In order to get a "free" replacement, you end up paying nearly as much as the original bulb. Not a good deal in my book.

I have a set of 5000K HIDs and "HID-like" hi beams and the lookalikes are definitely alot more yellow and less bright.

YES! What he said! Not worth the trouble. I went through the same thing doggiedog went through...Only my bulbs lasted 3 months. Must of been a good batch vs. doggiedogs.:D

I would recommend going for real HID's or a good alternative in the mean time is a set of Sylvania SilverStar's. Not quite as white as the wanna be xenon bulbs, but definitely brighter then the stock halogens.

Not quite as white? I was led to believe the Silverstars are THE whitest bulbs out there short of HID. What's whiter, 02ss?

Ryno,

I've had pretty good experience with mine. I've done a little comparison also in the color with member's cars with the true HID.

Take a look here:

I would go with a reputable retailer. Just in case you have problems.

SilverStars are the whitest Halogen bulbs out. But I haven't compared them to bulbs like the PIAA Extreme Whites.

The xenon-like bulbs are actually whiter and brighter then the SilverStars, but the reliability is questionable. I'm not sure of the long term impact on the electrical system either, since they run at a higher wattage.

I haven't had any problems with my "Krypton Platinum Showoff" Xenon bulbs as of yet. They sure are better than stock. However, real HID's are on my 'to get' list.

I like the Silverstars for a direct, and reliable replacement. But Car & Driver recently gave the PIAA Extreme Whites a favorable 'nod'.
But they got the bucks to burn on such things.
Of course when you talk of real HIDs, the discussion of standard bulbs is academic.
RTK
I liked the looks of the Silverstars very much but I have gone through 2 sets in less than a year (during install I was very careful not to touch the bulbs).

I wonder if the PIAA's are more reliable.
