Gas Tank Lever - Click HERE for Original Thread

I LOVE my new MDX but it has one problem. I have to pull the lever to open gas tank four or five times until it opens. Very embarrassing at gas station, not to mention fear of not being able to fill up. After it opens, I test it again and it works fine... until the next fill up. I have tried pulling lever with car in park and car off. Any suggestions before I take it in under warranty?

You have a problem that has not come up here to my knowledge.

Take it to the dealer to have this checked out.

The first time my wife tried to gas up she could not find the gas tank lever. Had to call me on the cell phone.

... that is not normal.

I think all you'll need to do is lubricate it at the gas door end! Just put a little grease on the black plastic "rod" that projects into the compartment and holds it closed, and a little more on the painted catch on the door. Engine oil will work but won't last as well as a thicker grease. If you don't have anything around, you can probably steal some excess from around one of the MDX door hinges or hatch hinges. On my MDX anyway, they were very liberal with the grease.

My gas door was a little bit sticky sometimes (not as bad as yours), and lubrication cleared it right up.

Thanks for the advise. Will try that tonight and let you know if it works.

I posted the advice to lubricate the mechanism, as that at least appeared to fix my sticky gas door. Soon after, it started sticking again. I tried different lubes (like lithium grease) with no difference.

Here's what I finally did, and a week later it's still fine. Behind the door is a catch, painted in body color. (The black rod in the body catches in it to secure the door). My theory was that there might not be enough clearance between the catch and the rod mechanism. So, I bent the catch very silightly in the gas door hinge direction. No tools were needed. The catch is attached to the door in such a way that it shouldn't bend the surface of that gas door when you do this, but bend only a little bit anyway, like maybe a millimeter or less.

For now, anyway, it pops right open ever time.

No actual problems with the lever, but if you are going full service and don't get out of the car, does anyone else find it tough to reach that lever. I have small hands and find it hard to fit my hand between the seat and door. I don't remember having this tight a space in my previous cars.

Hey Ms. MDX,
You just got me to realize that no one else has ever pumped my X but me. So I've never checked just how tight that space is. I'm going to my garage now and check it out.

I agree with the tightness of the area where the gas cap lever is. My hand can barely fit, it is also a little further back than what is natural. I'm one of those guys who pops his cap before getting to the pump. I guess I'll have to become an 'open door and pop' guy.

I just tried it and it is tight. Of course having banana hands doesn't help me any. I've always been a open and pop guy. I just never realized it.

I always have to open the door in order to use the gas release door lever....but since I only use self-service it's not a problem for me.

Thanks Dale MDX!

I bent the catch and one week later still opens. The lubes only worked for a day or two. I was getting tired of having to pry the gas tank door open with a credit card while my wife held the lever.:2:

You're welcome.

Mine's still working perfectly more than 2 weeks after the fix. Given that it was apparently a clearance problem, I can see why the lube helped, but didn't cure it.

I discovered this same "fix" a month or so after I purchased my MDX back in April. It has worked great since that time!

I have this problem too. Since gas is all full service in NJ, I can understand your embarrassment.

I'll have to check it out.
