MDX Rip - Click HERE for Original Thread

I recently saw a review of the Kia Sorento in Car & Driver, and could not help but notice the striking resemblence between the Kia and the MDX.

I really look like Kia designers just ripped their design model from the MDX -- The back windows, the roof lining etc. Take a look it is really sad. I wish they would come up with their own unique design.

Whew, I was bracing myself for a totaled MDX "Rest In Peace"...:1pat:

Looks kinda like an RX300 too...

When I first started reading this thread I thought: "Yeah right, how can it look like the MDX and the RX300 at the same time?"

Then I looked at the picture and tend to agree...

I do like the looks of this rig. Bet it does real well for KIA.

Rear of the G35 looks---Butt Ugly!

Wife considered the G35 but hated the looks of the rear. She almost got a I35 but bought the Lincoln instead.

The new Nissan Altima is also butt ugly IMNSHO:rolleyes: And as a matter of fact the Infiniti G35 rear end resembles the new Altima - is anything on the new Infinity uniquely designed:eek:

When I first saw it I thought RX300 myself.

Not bad though.

Were you looking @ the 03 or the 03.5 sedan? They improved the trunk on the .5 -- got rid of that rectangle w/the infiniti logo, right above the lock. It looked awful IMO. The new one looks better, tho from the rear the G35s looks a bit skinny and tall, sorta like the Toyota Echo.

Back on topic: Funny this thread came up. When I saw an ad (about a month ago) for the Sorrento it really looked a lot like the X. When I looked @ the pics in this months C&D (hardcopy) it really looked like the RX. Well, style-wise they got it right :)

I was really considering an G35 before deciding on an '03 MDX. I couldn't pull the trigger. I kept coming back to the truck lines, ugly. I kept coming back to the interior design, butt ugly. It's all plastic inside. Everything went into the engine. Yes it is impressive, but it's gonna get old and all your left with is a relatively ugly looking car.

'03 MDX Black/Black Touring/Nav due at dealer 11/25
2002 Acura MDX!
Head light looks like a RX300

Rear window looks exactly the same as MDX!!!!!! (this is getting worse)

Mirror looks kinda like the MDX

Body cladding copyed from Ford Escape

The edge of the hood looks like a Honda Pilot (looks exactly that is)

Tail light looks like the Toyota Highlanders

Air condition vent placement copyed from Toyota Highlander

And the car is a part MDX + part Ford Escape + part Toyota Highlander= Most of the Kia Sorento and Sorento is
:16: :3:

I think Kia learned a lesson, never copy from people. Other car companys has thier own copy right and design. So the guy or person who ever designed the Sorento, never copy people :14:

I actually saw this vehicle a long time ago at a car show here in Atlanta. I actually thought it didn't look all that bad at the time. It is funny cause I remember going to a hockey game right after and was talking to my teammates about it. They all just lookad at me and said "would you want to be a proud owner of a KIA?" Reality hit me hard and after a few cracks against the boards with my head(helmet on of course) that phase of my life disappeared. At the time I had my sights set on an rx300 and thought it looked alot like it. BTW is anyone else a little upset that the MDX and the KIA have the same plastic wood?

My dealer claims the plastic wood is better because it doesn't warp.

Sounds fish to me...:p

Bet the dealer salesrep also told you that you should pay $3,000 over MSRP because the MDX is worth it. Then again, maybe the dealer salesrep was honest and explained that he had a kid in college and needed someone with extra money to .....

why is plastic better than chrome. After all, I assume that the chrome is really shiny plastic ..

It looks fairly good until you see the stats and note things in the review like: "Its exterior styling is trim, with just the right amount of muscle to make it look like an off-road vehicle. The interior styling is similarly restrained; the plastic and leather surfaces have an almost Lexuslike hue and feel to them. The problem is that once it hits the road, the Sorento's lack of ride and handling refinement will quickly clue most people in to the fact that they aren't driving a Japanese SUV."

I like it. I know it copies a bunch of other SUV's, but common guys, this is a SUV after all. How much more creative can designers be with a box. That's like arguing about the shape of a T.V.

Nobody shopping for a MDX or RX is going to buy a KIA, but lets look at the stats:

1. 3.5L V-6 with 217 ft-lbs of torque.
2. just as roomy as the CR-V, and bigger than the X5.
3. Body on Frame design---i.e. it can go off-road.
4. 10 yr./100,000 mile powertrain warranty.
5. dirt cheap. I have seen loaded versions for less than $21k.

Don't get me wrong, i don't plan to trade in my MDX for it, but it sure is a great value, and compared to the Rav-4, and the CR-V this thing has a V-6. KIA has come a long way in less than 5 years.

my 2 cents.

Willing to trade the 'known' reliability and high resale value of a RAV4 for a KIA with more features and off-road capability, and long warranty?
It makes an interesting question.
One big advantage of the Toyota is that it is a given the company will still be here 10 years from now.
But the consumer benefits from competition, bring it on!
greatscot
I agree with DaleB. I saw one of these wannabees parked at an office I recently visited. It did look quite nice on the outside, nice white like my X, but as the owner was getting out and I asked if I could look at the interior. Two adults sitting in the front gives away its smallish interior size, and not very much leg room in the back seats. It is nice, but IMBO the X is better quality and glad I bought it and not a KIA. After all, I plan to keep my X for a number of years.

Hi All:

___Not to rain on this parade as I have posted about this before … A friend of mine owns a Kia Sportage w/ just over 40,000 miles on it now. The only trouble he has had (this happened within the last 1500 miles) is the gas cap door doesn’t stay closed after a fuel up. In any case, I wouldn’t spend $20K on a Sorento either but the < $20K entry price point sure looks good for someone looking for a nice size as well as decently equipped SUV w/ a shallower than average wallet. As far as reliability is concerned, the Kia’s never did that well according to Consumer Reports but at this kind of price, it makes me wonder what kind of profit is involved in building/selling SUV’s?

___Good Luck

You can't look at CR when it comes to KIA reliability. That's b/c the new KIAs- i.e. the Sedona, Optima, and the Sorento are light years ahead of the sportage, etc. This isn't Honda/Toyota, they are still in the infancy stages of car design/engineering.

btw, i think KIA is here to stay. They have the advantage of favorable tariffs(since they are a South Korean co, and not a japanese co.), and they are partially owned by Hyundai(which is the largest co. in So. Ko.)

As someone who just got out of the Army, I can safely claim that nobody who is in the military is going to buy a vehicle with the letters KIA (which stands for Killed In Action, for you civilians) on it!

Not everyone can afford the X, so the KIA would be next best thing for those looking for the comforts of an SUV, without going for broke. :2:
It's all a matter of options. I would never have bought a Lada, but I always saw some on the road. There will always be a market for cheaper vehicles.

we were "upgraded" to a brand new (less than 1000 miles...) KIA minivan about 3 weeks ago on a short trip... "POS" is too kind a description. front drivers seat wobbled all over the place. i thought it was going to come out of the floor. fit and finish was terrible overall. got lots of nusiance lights, headlights out of proper adjustment, etc...

my wife and i had a pretty good laugh at KIA's expense... we called it, "the KIA of minivans..." now we call anything we find piss poor, "the KIA of (fill in the blank)... LOL!

I went to take a look at it. It actually looks like a good SUV. Very roomy looks good and the price WOW fully equipped 24K. Now here is the bad part!
I could not get the hood open. Finally got it open then we could not get it to close and latch. After many attempts slamming it the thing finally closed. Then the sunglass holder in the console was broken already. The problems with the rear hatch release... This was a brand new vehicle on the lot. So much for quality control.
