I seen in the magazines you look at on the
airplanes of all the luxury items that there
was a company that makes a computer
kinda like the NAVAGATION but this unit
actually displays emails that you can
check/send...etc probally using WAP? or Satelite?
Anyone know of this company? URL?
I really could care less to watch a DVD while
I am driving, but to be able to check your email
in traffic, or at a red light, or while your getting
gas would be the bomb. |

It might literally be "the bomb." The short list of things you shouldn't do while filling the gas tank includes:
** running the engine
** smoking
** using cell phone
** getting in and out of the car
Because all these activities carry the risk of sparks. Be careful out there! |

Your first post SouthBeachMiami.
Welcome to the Acura MDX board.
A little off topic but do you own a MDX and if so did you leave it parked at the airport?
I went on a 3 day trip last week and did not drive my X to the airport. Drove my old P/U. Did not want to take the risk of leaving the new MDX in a risky parking situation. I have no dings yet. |

I left mine for first time last july, when it was a mere 2 months old. But at a private parking facility....and for 16 days. omg. It was fine. And in january I'm doing that again, but for nine days or so. |

I got more then a ding leaving it at a FERRY parking lot.
Someone backed into it, and dented it and left.
I get back to it, and he left me that as a gift...
nice right? |

BTW Do you think there is more chance of a running vehicle somehow igniting fire at a filling station OR of starting a car causing a fire??? Some things to consider: a) your vehicle is probably not the only one being refueled , others are running & other pumps are being turned on/off b)the starter (specifically the solenoid) is probably the single highest power (volts & amps) electrical device on any vehicle, and DC motors are NOTORIOUS for sparking c)with vapor recovery systems at filling stations, the concentration of fuel vapors is almost certainly too low to ignite...
Unless you live in NJ (where self service is still oddly BANNED), it is pretty much impossible to not "get in or out of the car" at a filling station...
I do think that in RARE circumstances (like having a PLASTIC fuel container on a PLASTIC bed liner of a truck) there is a possibility of huge static electricity discharge -- but the other situations sure seem like they are either pretty darn safe (else millions of folks would be blowing up every day...)

You forgot Oregon.
In Oregon we can handle vote by mail but can not pump our own gas. |

I was thinking the same thing this morning, whether it's a RIM device or one of the many alternatives. Email attached to your car just seems lame for so many reasons. Here are a few:
** Hard to upgrade.
** Hard to backup, save or attach attachments, etc.
** Limited choice of providers.
** When the car's in the shop, no email.
** When you're travelling by plane, etc., no email.
** When you're away from your car, no email.
** ...
Other devices address all those pitfalls. Plus, many of the alternatives can also be used while pumping gas. :) |

All I could find was 'prototypes'/ planned new technologies
(except for RIM, which is a whole other ball of wax...)
I think that a dedicated "email device" integrated into one's vehicle would only make sense if you could use a very good voice input/voice response system.
The problem of "mail where you are" would have to be addressed by a "web mail" type solution. Generally more and more email providers have implemented a seperate layer on top of their traditional SMTP system (not IMAP). They DISPLAY unread messages in the browser based, but the email is still stored in SMTP repository.
The integrated "Voice Response Telematics" could READ you new emails will you drive. You might also respond/forward messages.
The sticking points: you'd need a service that hooks into this, it might require additional subsription fees, no agreement on a) which method makes most sense b) does this carve up ISP pie, or expand it... |

Get a T-Mobile Sidekick. It's only $100 at Amazon and $40 a month. You would need the monthly service regardless, and this way it is portable. I check my email, browse the web, do instant messaging whenever I have down time (stop lights, shopping with the wife, elevators)
Also it's a cell phone and has the usual compliment of pim features.
Integrating this into the Navi screen would be a cool idea but I don't think it is worth the effort or dollars to do this. Someday though.... |

| there was some guy in here that hook'd up his system to read his email through his home computer, through satellite (or some kind of communication :8: ) feed to his DVD system? Don't know if that's worth it to you? Maybe through a cell phone / connection? Use the search feature looking 4 email, DVD upgrades, mods for DVD, etc,... |
