You've probably seen this recent campaign by religious leaders called "What would Jesus drive?" - with the intent of getting the faithful away from the more polluting vehicles (although they include SUVs in this group).
They are, of course, shooting themselves in the foot, anyone knows that the Lord, in his Wisdom, would of course be driving an MDX, and, like all Good Drivers, would leave a reasonable stopping distance between cars.
Also, I just can't see Him tooling around in a Geo Metro, no matter what the gas mileage - He would certainly go for a ULEV vehicle with all the other advantages (i.e. traveling with up to six Apostles...)
Sorry, just had to weigh in on this... |

Modern vehicles including SUVs, are very earth friendly compared to older worn out vehicles, of which many still populate our roads and pollute our air.
Part of the 'campaign' is to reduce the number of SUVs which are maiming or killing people in accidents, as well as consuming oil reserves.
Although, they play down the latter part. They don't want to appear overly conservation minded, lest they lose support from the 'oil barons' and any associated political connections. Perish the thought! |

It also says in the Bible in Acts:
"And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them.
They also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come (another place in the Bible says He'll return to Mount of Olives in Jerusalem) in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven."
He will not have to drive because he will come and go without any external means of transport... |

| As Jay Leno pointed out, being young single carpenter from rural area he would probably drive a truck. Or something that could fit 13 people. :) |

So I'm imagining some future archeologist discovering the Jesus monster truck:
"Yes, they were a strange culture, they would paint pictures of their dieties on immense powerful trucks - we're not sure if they worshiped these objects or used them in battle..."
'course, I think we're a pretty strange culture myself :) |

I am a believer of salvation through faith in Christ's payment on the Cross for my sins. (this is what the Bible's all about!) So, what you drive (or do, for that matter) has nothing to do with your eternal desitiny. He doesn't care about what you drive. However, he may have challenged our hearts to the reason behind our choice (if for reasons of status, pride, jealousy, envy, selfish ambition or vain conceit, etc. etc.). This is a personal issue. So why did you buy yours?
Most of us bought the MDX because we needed or wanted the people capacity, cared about the security of AWD, and/or thought it was a value leader (reliable, versatile, etc.); in other words, we had good reason.
I am annoyed that we MDX drivers are not only included with the ranks of most monster SUV drivers, but that we are now included in the blame for the downfall of society. :( The X gets no worse (or better) than the average MPG in this country (20 MPG), which is one of the prime motivators behind the campaign. Another thing: Shouldn't this group be focusing on the multitude of societal trends that undermine the moral foundation on which our country was founded?! As a Christian, I don't understand their priorities.
Finally to the question at hand, Jesus was a carpenter, by trade. So, if he were around in body today, he may drive a pickup truck or van of sorts. Or, once he had started his ministry (age 30 or so), he probably would not own a car at all. He wouldn't worry about such things. For transportation he may have hitched a ride or simply borrowed a vehicle (or boat, plane, bike . . . .)
My 2 cents. |

More than likely, Jesus would have not driven. He would have walked EVERYWHERE (or used public transportation).
This reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw about a year ago. Same concept.
"Jesus would have used his turn signal"
What?? WHEN would he have used his turn signal? |

If the question is: what would He have driven 2000 years ago, I guess it would have been a donkey. I was in the Caribbean a few weeks ago, where it's not uncommon to see donkeys by the side of the road. Some of the locals referred to them as 'Jerusalem Jeeps'. So I guess that's one possibility.
Of course, if He were to drive something more contemporary, then wouldn't it have to be a Jesus Chrysler??? |
|
|
| remery |
| At the risk of sounding a bit blasphemous, if Jesus was use to something that made an ass out itself on the road wouldn't that indicate a ML320?:2: |

Heh - that's only blasphemous if you're a Mercedes owner. :D
But back to the original point, if there was one, I think the question was WWJD today? The world was a lot smaller 2000 years ago (provided we throw out the Incas, etc, as most western history does), so animal-based travel was feasible.
But if you look at our modern religous avatars, such as the Dali Lama, the Pope, and Bono, they spread the word with full mass transit - cars, planes, tour busses, etc. The carpenter job was kind of a temporary thing for Jesus, once he hit the road, it became a matter of mass communication. And certainly, to reach the contemporary American public, a pickup just wouldn't cut it. (We really don't want him competing with Willy Nelson). So I don't know, a sensible yet upscale vehicle would seem to be the thing.
Hmm, I wonder if He'd join the site? In fact, what would He do with the Internet? |

I am absolutely certain Jesus would condemn radical environmentalists for worshipping the creation rather than the Creator!
What Would Jesus Drive? (playing off the popular phrase, What Would Jesus Do?). I believe He is more concerned with why we drive a particular vehicle rather than what vehicle we drive. Jesus was always more concerned with our hearts and our motives than our actions per se. He condemned the hypocrites of His day saying the were "keeping the letter of the law while violating the spirit of the law."
What would Jesus say about the SUV wreckers? http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...=&threadid=8612 |

Probably not - the Passion Plays that it's modeled after arose in the 13th century - a time marked by darkness, disease, and really bad transportation.
JC Superstar might be a better model, since busses and aircraft had various roles in the movie.
I particularly like when the tanks roar over the hill and chase down Judas... |
