Well, it's finally decided, my wife and I are ready to order our MDX :D . We definitely want the Touring with Nav, so the only question is, do we get the RES? Can someone help me out here. Is it possible for the front passengers to listen to a CD while the rear passengers listen to a different CD using headphones? Also, how convenient or difficult is it to use the 6-disc changer when it's under the passenger seat? Thanks!

Yes, you can listen to different cd's, if you load the one for the rear in the RES deck, or listen to the radio while the kids watch a DVD. I havent loaded up the changer yet. But the RES is the BEST accessory I've ever bought! Kids don't say a word, other than an occassional giggle. I bought two extra wireless headphones (about $50. each).

When you get touring you get an INDASH 6CD changer:

The NAVI unit is under the seat, but the only time you would need to access that is to plop in an undated DATA DVD, if that is ever needed...

If you have Touring with NAV and RES, I heard that the in-dash 6-CD changer is replaced by an under the seat one, is this true? I think the RES occupies the space meant for the in-dash changer?

... but I can not get into built-in RES systems!

Like I said I am an old fart I suppose; two boys in college and a high school freshman - I have outgrown the need for keeping the kids entertained.

That said however, I do NOT understand those parents who allow their kids to be entertained 24 hours a day:rolleyes: I can understand a video entertainment system for long trips, but to drive 5 minutes to the store?? I am amazed by short trippers around town who rely on RES to keep their kids behaved?? I see people who "need" videos for short trips all the time. I do not get it.

Speaking of long trips, in the past my kids carried a "toy" bag with them: books, hand-held games, Game Boy, etc. and it worked great. If we were in need of that today I believe I would go the portable DVD route; its available for trips both in the backseat as well as in the hotel room at night (or at grandmas house).

So To RES or not to RES? I say get Game Boys and a portable DVD and skip the RES.

I have a RES model on order. I would recommend it if you have young children or plan to while you own the X. My wife and I both agree that it will NEVER be available on short trips no matter how upset he gets. But, sometimes short trips end up being long trips since our local traffic really stinks! Even on a Saturday night we can have a 10-15 minute trip turn into a 45 minute trip. In those cases, it will be nice to have it "ready to go" without having to have remembered to bring it with us.

We also keep a bag of toys in the car for him to play with and it will remain his primary source of play time (when he's not practicing his talking or being baited into practicing his talking :) ).

I wanted one but my 12yr old daughter said it's a waste of money, I thinks she's right especially we don't do much long driving.

That is my understanding as well, I think the changer goes under the Driver's seat.

I'll be able to tell you for sure in a week! :2:

I'm not for these systems myself, too much money for what you get. I also agree with using RES for long trips but not for short trips. I have friends that use theirs all the time, no matter what. Their kids are unruly and I think they use the RES to keep them calm. Although, this surely indicates the lack of discipline or imposing discipline.

I also like the portable DVD idea for long trips. I can use it for something other than the vehicle. And when it comes time to trade in the vehicle (should I decide to do that), I don't have to worry about how much money I lost on this accessory 'coz I keep the RES. :)

I think a better route is the Toshiba SD-P2000 (around $635 on buydig.com) plus the Blitzsafe RCA AUX jack that MDXtrous has.

Thanks for the feedback. My kids are 11 and 12, so keeping them occupied is not an issue. The RES would be more of a luxury for them rather than a necessity. But I'm one of those people that just loves gadgets. The RES is just one more toy in the car, admittedly, an expensive toy!

Arzoo,

My 2 cents. I have the factory installed VHS RES in my 2001 Eddie Bauer Expedition. RES, or the moonroof were free options on my model. Took the RES because we thought it would be great for our 11 & 13 year old boys. I should have taken the moonroof. They watched it a few times at first, then the novelty wore off. I was cleaning the Ford out this weekend and pulled an old Star Wars tape out of the RES. They watched part of that movie on a Chrismas trip last year and it's been sitting in the unit ever since. By the way, the $1,400 option is adding just $120 to the trade value 2 years later.

I rest my case. I agree with crikey, If you want something, a less expensive portable DVD is the better buy with better utility.

Nothing more relaxing then my wife and I taking turns driving on those long trips. When its her turn, I'm in the back watching my favorite movie, and she goes in back when I drive. Yeah, it's a luxuary item, but on a 40k car, what is another 1k?

I see people spending more than this on mods that they will not recoup their investment(s) when they go to sell. RES will help you on resale no question, so order it and enjoy.

I would NOT buy a used car with a RES, unless it was dicounted!! Regarding resale value, it is in the eye of the belolder; if you can find someone who wants it good, if not its worthless.

My wife and enjoy the opportunity to talk to each other on long trips; I could NEVER imagine us in opposite ends of the car:rolleyes: I suppose it is variety that gives the world spice;)

Seems the consensus on this thread is No Go on the RES. I'm not sure what we'll do, but thanks again for all the feedback.

Go with RES. It's definitely nice to help keep your passengers entertained, even if they are not kids. My parents who are in their mid 60's enjoy the ride when I put on movies for them.

If resale is all that one's concerned about, then the same can go about buying a new computer, or even a home dvd player. They will all be worthless in 5 years, but in those 5 years, the items can bring a lot of enjoyment. Isn't that why we buy a luxury car, so we can enjoy it?

I've been debating the RES/NO RES issue with myself for a while. Frankly, I've come to this conclusion.

If money is not an issue (it is with me) I'd get it right away. However, since I have other pressing projects that have priority, It will have to wait for now. I do plan on installing a RES system sometime in the future. I have teenagers, who would enjoy it, along with adults. Resale value is not in my equation. The true value is enjoyment only.

Bottom line, only you can determine its value and priority in your specific situation. Nothing says you have to get everything right away.

My vote is Yes and No.

The positioning of the components, including moving the 6-CD changer from the dash to a magazine under the seat, as well as the Navi DVD "in the trunk", bugs me.

I think if I were going to get a RES, I'd go with one of the many after-market solutions. Don't discard the idea of a portable/laptop solution (and I don't mean a laptop PC, 'tho that would work, too).
