MDX Recall Information - Click HERE for Original Thread

This morning I have received info concerning a recall affecting all MDXs with a VIN number in the range from 2HNYD1...1H500001 to 2HNYD1...1H505300. Quoting the bulletin:

"The MDX has a dual-threshold frontal airbag system for the driver and front seat passenger. The threshold, or minimum vehicle speed that the airbag will deploy in a collision, is dependent on whether the seat belt is buckled; deploying at a lower speed if the seat belt is not buckled.

The harness to the front passenger's seat belt buckle has been miswired, signaling the SRS that the seat belt is buckled when it isn't, and that the seat belt is not buckled when it is. This will affect the passenger's airbag deployment threshold in a low-speed collision. In a moderate to high-speed collision, the airbag will work as designed."

All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of this campaign. It is important to note that NOT ALL vehicles listed within this VIN range are affected.

In the bulletin, it describes how to tell the faulty harness from the correct one. If the part number on your harness is 81311-S3V-A30XX, you will need to have your harness replaced. If the part number on the harness is 81311-S3V-A31XX, your harness is the new countermeasured one. The part number can be found on a tag facing you (if you're looking under the seat), and to the right.

In either event, upon notification please schedule an appointment with your dealer so that the vehicle records can reflect the performance of the recall. I received this information this morning, and have posted it immediately so that all owners can get a heads-up.
Thanks Tim

I'll just add:

I took my MDX in today because my VIN # falls within the range, however when I got to the dealer, they entered my VIN number in their computer and it indicated that my MDX was okay -- I insisted that they still check it since it was a safety recall and I'd driven 30 minutes to the dealer for this.

They had to remove the passenger seat to find the part number on the harness, and my harness was indeed incorrect and had to be replaced.

If your VIN number is within the range, I'd have your dealer check it - no matter what their computer may indicate.

Here's another input.
My VIN is way after the range indicated,MDX only two weeks old. Checked the harness P/N and it is the defective one. I don't know if I will be notified since I'm not in the range but will call the dealer.
Bobg:
Can you be more specific as to how exactly to see that number??? I tried to follow Tim's instructions to look under passenger seat, but saw nothing resembling a "part number" plate.

Thanks.

Look under the pass. seat on the on the inboard side towards the back. Mine had a paper part number tag attached with black tape to the felexable cable. It was on the back side of the cable so you might have to reach in and turn it a little.
If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to fax the actual bulletin to a member if they can somehow make it viewable for the group. I'm working on it on my website, but it probably won't happen for a month or so since I'm ironing out glitches, one of which is that I have to get a bigger server to do all that I want to do. Another of which is the credit card portion of the site, won't be able to be accessed until Monday. $@#&)#@!!!!!

Re: the part of your message that read . . .

I just checked under my passenger's seat and found the white tag. It ends in S3V A503. Based on the way I read your post I assumed the part number should end in either A30XX or A31XX. Furthermore, the two numbers you provided each has five digits while mine only has four. Does the bulletin give any additional details that would shed any light on this discrepancy?

Thanks,

Generally, all Acura and Honda part numbers work the same. Allow me to explain.

If the part number is 04715-S3V-A90ZZ, the 04715 is the group number, in this case it would indicate a bumper cover (there are group numbers for every part). The S3V would tell you that the part fits an MDX (ST7 would mean 94 and up Integra, S3M is 2001 CL, etc.). The A90ZZ is either a color designation, production run, or an American Honda code for the manufacturer, depending on what the part is. It can also change with revisions so that you can tell a newer part from an older one, even if they are the same part.

If the part number you have is the same in every way except the last digits are A503, I would hazard a guess to say that you have a much newer production run on the harness, or you have the wrong tag. But remember, the part number would have to start with 81311.

I have the same tag # that you have.

Tim: Can you get any more info on this, or do we need to bring it in to the dealer to have checked?
Just re-read the bulletin, and towards the back it states that the sub-harness is different for the touring models. Ones with the last digits of A50 will need to be replaced, the A51 is okay. Sorry about that.
Just talked with my dealer:

He said my vin did not fall in the range, so I don't need the cable replacement. However, I looked under the seat and do have a cable with SV3 A503 on it. So now I don't know what to believe. Seems strange that I have a defective part number according to the doc, but because my vin number isn't in the range, they wont replace it.

Suggestions? Am I ok?

Thank to Tim for faxing us the original recall bulletin. It is 4 pages long:

I checked with my service manager concerning your issue, if you can provide me with the VIN number I'd be glad to call American Honda on your behalf and try to get an answer direct from them as to your recall status.
Since there have been a lot of questions regarding this recall and information that dealers in every area of the country have provided, those of you who wish your MDX checked for recall status please email me at hondacuraworld@aol.com with your complete VIN number and I will gladly run your vehicle service acknowledgement in our computer, and fax you a copy if you wish.

I took my MDX into my S.F. Bay Area dealer (Acura of Pleasanton) yesterday for the 3,750-mile oil change. When I inquired about the "harness" recall I was told they are automatically checking the VINs on all MDXs that come in. An hour and fifteen minutes later, after the oil and filter was changed and the MDX received its complimentary car wash, I looked at my $31.81 invoice. It included an entry reading: "Perform Passenger Seat SRS Harness Campaign. Replaced Harness. Campaign Completed." The part number noted on the invoice was 81311-S3V-305.

My only disappointment was that the service department refused to apply silicon to the rear of the bracket on my leaking driver's side mirror, even after I handed the service writer a printout from a post on this board from another MDX owner in Southern California who had the same "leaking mirror" problem. The poster said the service manager (it included his name and phone number) at his dealership (Acura of Pasadena) agreed to have a techncian pull the mirror and apply silicon to the rear of the bracket in an attempt to eliminate the leaking, and thus the water streaks down the side. To my dealer's credit (if true), I was told that the service department will contact Acura H.Q. to see if they can receive authorization for the "silicon fix." Given the high cost of repair in this day and age, I can understand a dealer not wanting to spend a mechanic's time on repairs for which the dealer will not get reimbursed by Acura, even if it's seen as a problem that should be covered under warranty insofar as the customer is concerned.

But I digress . . .

In light of the fact that I initiated a "Leaking Mirror Update" thread on this board a few weeks ago, I suppose I should now go try to find it and see if there is any new information about this aggravating problem.

Just for Info:
I sent an Email to Acura Client services advising my MDX was past the recall range but had the defective harness installed and asked if I would still get a recall notice.I recieved a phone call 3 days later, The young lady said recall notices would be maile Fri. 3/9 but but could not answer my question, said if I didn't recieve a letter to contact my dealer. Not much help.
