I want a '03 MDX with touring and nav in April, 03 when my current lease expires. I want to buy and get specific colors in and out. I'm concerned that if I don't order soon I won't get it when I want it. Here's the deal offered to me in Cincinnati. Put down a $500 deposit now and he'll order what I want for an April delivery. He is currently selling for $500 under MSRP and will give me any accessories installed at his cost. He then showed me his book with prices he claimed were his costs. Ex: towing package installed for $600 and change. In addition, he said he would give me whatever discount under MSRP was the going rate at the time of delivery. The dealer (the sales manager) said "I hope its not true, but if the going rate is $3000 under MSRP, I'll give it to you for that at that time if you will order it now." I'm very tempted but since I have time, I thought I would ask you all what you think. So what do you think...................?
Thanks,

| Here in VA the going rate is MSRP! So it sounds like a great deal to me! Specially the add ons.. Go for it!:1: |

| I would agree. I paid MSRP with a small discount on options. I would take it.:) |

Sounds preety good to me. Not sure of the going rate for a 2003, but in Sept., the going rate for a 2002 where I checked was MSRP. However, I negotiated to get the Acura Protection Package (splash guards, cargo tray, wheel locks (2002 package)) and Cargo Cover thrown in at no cost. I also got the tow package installed at dealer cost (which was $ 700 for my dealer?). I may not have got a great deal on the tow package, but I figured it was worth the price quoted. I think you should at least get the Acura Protection Package at no additional cost, and getting at least $ 500 less than MSRP is a preety good start. The alternative is to offer him a firm $ 750-1000
less than MSRP and stick with that deal if he will make it ? |

Sounld like a much better deal than the experience many of us had with the 01/02.
I paid MSRP and $900 for the towing package installed by the dealer.
I would be sure to have the dealer put in writing his offer to adjust price to the going rate when you get it in April.
Good luck on your buying experience.
You will love the 2003 MDX! |

.......April, I can almost guarantee that they'll be discounting MDXs pretty good by then (I'm guesstimating that it will be at least something like $1,000-$2,000 under MSRP possibly more depending on what part of the Country)
My suggestion would be to go ahead and take the deal, order what you want for April delivery as your dealer suggests, but make sure you get it in writing SIGNED BY THE SALES MANAGER, that the $500 deposit is FULLY REFUNDABLE if you change your mind for any reason - this way you're fully covered if they do not honor what they say.
Additionally, I strongly believe that by April you'd most likely not have much of a problem finding exactly what you're looking for (as far as color and model go) provided you're not stuck on one dealer and willing to do some driving.........However, by putting down the deposit you're covered either way, and if they were not willing to give you the prevailing discount you could say "look, dealer X has the exact vehicle I'm looking for, and for X dollars under MSRP.....if you don't give me that I'll take back my deposit and go there |

when my salesman said "at his cost" I thought he meant the cost that the dealer spends to buy the accessories. NOT. he offered me running boards including installation charge for $626. also told me that it wil take 3-5 hours to install both side. i called the dealer's service department later and found out that the dealer charges $549 for the boards and $82 for 1-1/2 hour installation. the total includin tax was about $20 higher than what my salesman offered me. When i told him the dealer price and also told him that he must get these for lower than $20, he said, "at my cost" which means the price that he pays to the dealer to buy the accessories. I just laughed at him.
guess he earns $20 for running boards if sold at dealer price. |

What makes you think the 03 X's will be discounted later next year? Thanks. |

My 2003 Touring Nav is scheduled to be here in a week. I am paying $1000 below msrp. The price includes 2 years of scheduled maintenance and wheel locks. I am purchasing body side moldings for $187 and side steps at a "dealer cost" of $521. While I was comparing prices last month, many dealers in the Carolinas were willing to go $500 under msrp. It appears as usual, that pricing will vary by market and demand. The dealer did tell me after I gave up my RX300 that they made a mistake on the price. After a few phone calls however, they said they would honor the price I have on the paperwork.
My concern for you would be trying to time the delivery with your lease expiration. There have been many threads here about delays with certain options or colors, dock strikes, etc. , plus you never know when during a given month the assigned build date will be. You might want to check with your leasing company to see if they will let you add a month to your lease if needed. One of my neighbors did this on their BMW and the charge for the additional month was less than their usual payment. I work for a major bank and from what I understand the banks are losing quite a bit of money to people turning in leased vehicles due to the changing market. They might be more flexible than you think.
It is no fun to be without a car if the MDX gets delayed. I sold my RX300 to Car Max last month and have been driving my 94 Corvette. It has been a pain, but it will make me appreciate the smooth ride, space, and water tightness of the X even more! |

Thanks to all who have made comments so far. I'm hoping for more! I already have two vehicles so I don't have to time the lease return with getting the MDX exactly. I can wait if I need to. How did you get the scheduled service and how did you document that?
Thanks,

| It shows on my sales order, but I'll see what they do when I pick up the car next week. |

I have a sales order that says that I'll get an '03 at the '02 price. I know it's on "paper" but I am anticipating resistance from the dealer. Do you or anyone else know to what degree dealerships try to get out of honoring what's "in writing"?
Does anyone have any advice on helping to ensure that the dealer does the right thing? |

Hi Mdxer46:
___If the quote said an 03 X at 02’s MSRP, that’s $1k under MSRP for the 03’s Base and Touring trims and $1200 under MSRP on the Touring w/ NAVI. Touring w/ RES was an unknown last year … Just have the contract changed that they will match the 02’s MSRP and you’re good to go.
___Good Luck

Thanks xcel.
My sales order does currently say "02 MSRP price" for an '03. The actual dollar amount must be implied as it is not stated. I was hoping to hear from others if dealers try to weasel out of promises made months ago, but are in writing. I'd like to think that the dealer will "do the right thing" but I am not convinced as yet.
I plan to call in this week and confirm with the Sales Mgr that this deal is at the '02 price. I'll be ready if it's anything else. Again, I am hoping for a "you got it!" |

| While that "phrase" is written down, why not add the exact 02' price in writing as assume you know how the 03' is to be equipped? |

Good one!
Their version of "do the right thing" is likely quite different from yours! |

My dealer tried big time to get out of the agreement. I had to quote from their "core values" posted on their web site, threaten to call the owner, give examples of the free publicity they would receive here if they backed out, etc. |

I was hoping not to hear that! Sorry that you had to press 'em to simply do what is right by the customer. I've had visions of having to do the same thing today when I call in.
Buying a car should be easier than this! |

Called the dealership and spoke with the Manager. Got a production date and estimated delivery date. When I asked for a total cost prior to taxes he stated the full '03 price. When I corrected him and told him that on the sales order the deal is an '03 at the '02 price, he then stated that cost will be $35,200 for the Premium.
Looks like this dealership is "doing the right thing" from the customer's perspective. I'll let everyone know who this dealership is once the dust settles and the X is delivered. I am holding out that it'll be a positive broadcast!
On the production dates, if an order is made the last week in October does a 12/10 production date and an 12/30 delivery sound about right? |
|
|
| jurincie |
| I would get the order reference number as soon as you can. That was my safeguard that they wouldn't switch vehicles on me if they found someone willing to pay MSRP. Otherwise, you really don't have much of a way to verify if they say your X was delayed at the factory. After reading some of the stories here, it is better to be safe than sorry. |
