Uh oh, this is not good at all. It is not a product update, but actually a safety recall. We will probably get recall notices from Acura soon. My VIN is in the affected group: 5004993

I think it means that the passenger airbag will think that the seatbelt is not buckled when it actually is and will not deploy correctly. This could be unsafe and I'm disappointed that Acura made this sort of serious mistake and took months to figure it out.
I wonder how they found out about this problem without first crash testing the vehicle? Suppose someone already crashed their MDX and found out the hard way? Or suppose it was that previously posted crash in Washington State? I guess this is all part of "first year" unknowns. Hmmmmmm
I'm afraid it is a recall. It's worded in such a way to put it in the best light. But if you read it carefully, it is saying that in some cases, the passenger side airbag won't deploy in a lower-speed accident. While the lower-speed accident might not sound as serious, it's obviously serious enough to warrant blowing the airbag in the first place.

I doubt if it's related to that Washington State accident because of the timing. The update itself is dated 2/20, way too soon after that accident. However, it's probably not an issue with crash-testing as it apparently is a defect in how the first few thousand harnesses were assembled.

If anything, it may be more related to that initial spread of complaints about the SRS warning light coming on. While most of the problems were due to a briefcase or handbag in the passenger's seat, maybe some of them were due to this problem, or at least it prompted Acura to investigate. If so, it sure took a while.

I've had my suspicions about the Ontario plant, which also builds Odysseys. The Odyssey, for a Honda, hasn't done that well either. Let's hope this is the worst of any initial problems.

Oh well, time for us to bring in the MDX for the first service anyway (I think my VIN ends in 1420).

This is a recall alright. But It might only affect the first 5300 MDXs (correct me if I am wrong). Sine the VIN# starts from 2HNYD1...1H500001 and ended 2HNYD1...1H505300.

Aside from the VIN#, Tim also mentioned to check the part number underneath the seat(passenger?) and to the right(I can't find mine exp the DVD). If the part number is
81311-S3V-A31XX, you will be fine.

Good luck everyone

I posted yesterday in the "maintenance" forum on this. My post is taken directly out of the Acura service bulletin.
