I plan on picking my '03 Touring w/ Nav. early this week, and I have a negotiation question for everyone. I realize that I should have asked this when I ordered the car, 3 monthes ago, but it didn't even cross my mind. I've read that many of you have gotten some accessories thrown in for free, and I want to run this proposition by my salesperson. I feel that I might get somewhere with it because:
1) I came to HIM, so he did not have to do one single thing to earn my business. I just walked in and said I wanted to order one from him.
2) The reason I did this is because I bought my '97 Integra from the very same salesperson, so I feel that this establishes some sort of advantage.

Any thoughts on my requesting a few accessories for free? Is this not in good "negotiations" taste? Any responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey. . . ask away. . . he's not going to offer it, believe me.

I'm in the same boat.. I ordered my car a long way back and it's supposed to finally come in med December. I hear about some dealers having plenty of 03's on the lot and having to discount. But where I live, the demand is still pretty high. When my car comes I'm planning on asking for a little discount and I'm pretty sure they are going to shoot me down. My big dilemma is if I should wait till January or February and see if demand comes down a little bit (GX470, 2x mdx's made compared to last year and the recession) might slow demand and make dealers sell for less. But how much? 200-500 wouldn't be worth it for me since I've been so eagerly waiting. But if it's close to 1000, I think it's worth the wait. Also, you can save $78 bucks on luxury tax by waiting!
I think in the next few weeks, we should all have a better idea if dealers are discounting or not.
I learn so much from this website, I don't know if it's a good thing or not! It's making me so impatient hearing about all the new goodies.

My dealer offers a "standard" kit of stuff, that I got for "free". I say "free" because I paid MSRP...

The kit includes:
1. Wheel Locks
2. Cargo Net
3. Cargo Tray

I also got them to throw in the moonroof visor.

I tried to include some other options in the deal (running boards, rear air deflector), but after I figured out how much they were trying to gouge me, I took them out.

Best of luck!

mystic--

Thanks for the info. What exactly is the purpose of wheel locks? It seems as if everyone gets them. The acc. I am going to ask for are body side molding, wood trim meter panel, and all-season mats. Relatively cheap things, if you ask me. Thanks again.

mauigirl721: Ever walk outside and find your vehicles sitting on its brake rotors and scratch your head saying "I swear I had 4 wheels when I left it there?". Cheap accessory that makes it a little harder for would-be theives to steal your rims. Note I say harder cause if they want em' they are gonna get em'. Especially the people that put their wheel lock key in the glove box.

The wheel locks are just special lug nuts (1 per wheel) that makes it *slightly* more difficult for someone to steal your wheels. You get a key that fits the special lugs so that YOU can get them off. Obviously, that key is something you want to have with you all the time....

Dunno about the plood or the mats, but I bought BSMs from Tim @ Hondaacura world for less than $100.

Your're right, unless you are getting a huge discount off of sticker, you aren't asking for much. The question is whether or not the dealer is too greedy to give up a couple of hundred in profits!

BTW - if you ARE getting a huge discount off of sticker, please don't tell me! :D

Here's my take:

The best time to negotiate is when you are placing the order, NOT later when "an agreement has been reached". Now, you have an order and they know that you "want the vehicle". Soooo, where is their motivation.

If you seriously want to negotiate, then I think that the only way is to be willing to walk from the deal. Then, you can really start the process all over again. Alas, if you don't reach agreement, then you are sitting there without your X!!

I suspect that the X with Navi will be tough for a while. The dealers do not have inventory and probably all that are ordered have been presold. Soooo, I would guess that the dealer wouldn't mind having a Navi unit to put in their showroom. Now, if you are talking about a non-Navi unit, that might be a horse of a different color.

Just my 2 cents worth

I negotiated for the misc. free accessories (I also paid MSRP) when I purchased the car ; where I got the "protection package" plus cargo cover thrown in. I do not think it hurts to ask, but believe it will tougher to get these thrown in "after the sale". You might also consider asking him to sell you accessories at "cost" when you pick up the vehicle. You may or may not save some $ on items you really want?

Bottom Line. A closed mouth never got fed. Worst case scenario, is a no. :4:

I could've got $500 under MSRP from another dealer (on my NAV/RES model 189) if I had the luxury to wait until mid-end January or take another color! (not even my 2nd or 3rd choice).......However, in my case the $500 did not warrant the extra wait as I had to return my "loaner" by end Dec. (or spend on rental in Jan)

I was told by my dealer that they'll give me a money factor of 0.0023. However, I was a little worried that they might switch on me when the vehicle arrived, so I'm submitting the paperwork for pre-approval this week (2-3 weeks before the vehicle's ETA), and they'll lock the rate for 30 days (which is plenty good) ........This way they cannot stick me with something higher at the last moment, thinking that I'll take the vehicle anyways after waiting all this time.

.......Always a good idea to expect the worst, and take necessary steps well ahead of time!

vicpai,

Check with ACS here . They are really easy to deal with, and I got a money factor of .00195.

I thought I had a good deal with Acura, but when I went in to pin them down, the deal suddenly changed...lower residual, higher money factor.

Watch out!

Thanks everyone for the input.....asked my dealer today (my car is here!!!!) and he said no. Actually, I didn't talk to my salesperson, I was talking to someone else. When I told him I had that question for my salesperson, he told me, "No, we can't do that.". I said, "Are you sure?". He responded with, "Yes, since I'm Rick's boss."!!! Didn't realize I'd been talking to the sales manager! Oh well, I'm too excited about getting my MDX in 2 days too care now! I just bought my accessories from Tim, anyways. Thanks again!
