Finally got around to replacing my wipers!!! 2 years of service could not go "unnoticed". I hoped they would last thru winter, but, alas, they did not agree with my estimates.
Got 2 Bosch Micro Edge Excels for the front, and some no-name for the rear. Around $40 all-in-all.
Here's a question - HOW DO YOU REPLACE THE REAR WIPER???
There is really nothing on the subject in the manual (2001)
I tried to raise it the same way the front ones do, but the "PLASTIC HOOD" did not seem to allow it to go any further than about 3 inches. Besides, the ceter of the wiper (where the hook is) seems to be "stuck" under that "hood" thing. I was really afraid to "push" it...
Replacement instructions please, anybody?
Thx |

FYI,
The factory replacement rubber cost about $5.85 each and are easy to replace.

Thanks, Worm.
It seems like that TSB shows how to remove the entire wiper. Plus, it says the nut must NOT be reused... So, not much help there. :(
Pictures show the wiper at a 90-degree angle, but without the "hood", and there are no instructions on whether it is bendable, or how to remove that hood.
Mesa: I decided to replace the entire wiper rather than just the rubber... I thought it would be less "difficult" Go figure. :) |

TheWorm ... thanks for the pic and TSB. Better than what I had, but
still somewhat of a quandry here:
Does anyone know how to "properly" remove the "cap". Looks like removing the cap will enable the wiper are to swing outward (sort of like the front blades).
Once the "cap" is removed, guess the next question is how to handle the cover over the blade itself. Ideas??
Has anyone done this yet? |

the "cap" is just snapped in place - pretty much just lift the edges (bottom towards the wiper arm) and it comes off - did it today (by accident, actually) - very easy off and on. Unfortunately, it did not help in flipping the wiper...
I just wonder if I can use "force" - maybe a spring is just so rigid, we need to flex our muscles? |

Changing the rubber piece takes about two minutes. No need to remove the cap or remove the whole assembly if you're only changing the rubber.
Hold the assembly away from the window and grab one end of the rubber. Move the end of the rubber to one side so you can grab one of the metal runners with a plier and pull it out. Do the same with the other metal runner. Now remove the rubber peice. Insert the two metal runners in the new rubber piece and slide it back in until it locks.
Done!

On Wednesday before the holidays I managed to find a few minutes and stopped by my dealer...
This is from both a tech AND Acura parts dept. @ Acura of Brooklyn:
The rear wiper BLADE cannot be replaced! :(
It's the insert, or the entire assembly... |

| So, the only option is to replace the rubber? Did anybody go with refills other than sucky OEMs? |

| Can't wait for the wiper to go bad so I can trade up to a 2003! :5: |

Lugnut,
You don't have to trade up, simply buy the new rear blade. The price is $41,000 plus tax. By the way, it comes with a new MDX attached (special promotion from Acura).
Now if Tim would offer this on a special, that could get real interesting ??? |

| well, I didn't go with srpbep's suggestion yet :) but the first snow came down last week and the rear wiper got bad, so I went to local Strauss Discount autostore and got a pair of Lexor refills (B). They were alittle longer than OEMs, but the width was the same. Had to cut about an inch (I think the correct length is 19"). Nice touch - the package included a plastic clip which made attaching metal stripes a snap. It's a little hard to get the refill in/out though, otherwise no brainer. Cost was around $6 for 2 blades. Now when it rains or snows, I don't hear my wipers (AT ALL!) - no more scratching noises or streaks. Happy kemper and waiting for more snow!!!!!!! Oh, NOT THAT MORE! :2: |
