I was just washing my 2002 Touring and noticed a big crack in the aluminium wheel. The crack is across one of the 'spokes'

If I were you....I would give your rims a visual inspection before your next drive

Wow! Have you hit anything with your wheel/tire lately? Like a large bump or pothole!

What tire preassure do you use?
sars
No bumps, no hits, no dings...recommended tyre pressures...no reason for a crack
BaldEagle
Thanks for the heads up.

Lucky that you found the crack before you had problems.

Is it possible that the crack was caused by over torqued lug nuts? Have you had the tires rotated recently?

I'll be sure and check mine. Thanks again.

Crack is in the middle of a 'spoke' which makes it unlikely to be caused by torquing of the nuts.

A perfect situation to have a full-size spare aboard the ship, cap'n!

sars,

You sure about no potholes? They are the most logical culprits.

There could have been a flaw in the casting! Like an air pocket, thuis weakening the alloy.

Or it could be that the alloy Acura is using is too soft. BMW had that problem with their motorcycle wheels a couple of years ago.:1:

I never see this type of problem before. When you have chance, take a photo and show us (at least to me)

Call TLC or contact your dealer, maybe they will exchange a new rim with you.

Hi Sars:

___Please keep us posted on the outcome. With no tire damage, rim edge damage, suspension and or front end damage, I would be willing to bet your Acura dealer will take care of this very quickly but I am interested in the outcome none the less. This is the kind of item that Acura should cover without any hassle but Acura has not always been the best manufacturer in this regard.

___Again, please give us all some feedback as to what your dealership did to rectify this problem because driving on a damaged wheel like you described sounds dangerous and should be taken care immediately.

___Good Luck

Went to the dealer today, and they changed the wheel immediatly at no charge, and no questions asked.

"A very unusual problem" was the reply for the service person.

Was the crack all the way through the cross section of the spoke or was it a "partial" or superficial kind of a crack? Aluminum castings are sometimes prone to "spider cracking" but typically these are cosmetic or superficial only, not through. Based upon the dealer moving so quickly my assumption is that is was a crack that was all the way through.

We owned a '94 Legend (great car) that had porous wheel castings. It took about 10 trips to various tire shops and dealers before the problem was ultimately diagnosed. Acura replaced all 4 rims under warranty.....very unusual problem per the dealership.
sars
The crack was more than a surface crack, just on one side of the spoke, probably pentrating around 25%.

It looks more like a stress fracture than anything else.

Porous wheels were always a problem with older designs, not at all related to the wheel strength. This must have been a dud wheel casting.

I'm gonna keep checking them from now on.........

Thanks for the info sars. You have just made alot of people a little more savvy as to problems that a vehicle could have. Notice I say A vehicle cause there is obviously a possibility of cracking on ANY make of rims.:29:
