| We picked up our '03 SS Touring last week at night. The next day while I was coming out of a store, I noticed that the drivers door was a different shade of silver than the rest of the vehicle. (It was parked across the lot in a corner spot) I thought maybe it was just the lighting so I looked from many differnet angles - same conclusion - it was actually a different shade. The dealer looked up the VIN and had no indication of any repairs done. There was no evidence of overspray or anything being not being brand-new. Then they offered us our pick of any other new MDX or to have it fixed. We didn't want to have paint work done on a new car, so we picked out a sandstone touring one. (We liked both colors). Then the sales manager said she had an experience with another SS MDX with the drivers door a shade off before !! We are really pleased with our MDX - but keep an eye out for the paint on the Silver ones. |

I have an '02 SS and was wondering the same thing. Mine looks OK, but I noticed on others (different color), the bumper looks a different shade.
I still think it's a combination of lighting, glare etc. and the painted surface itself, whether metal or plastic. |

| The paint on bumpers will usually be just a tad different in color than the body of a vehicle due to the fact a flex agent has to be added to the bumper paint. |

Depending on the lighting our SS has the same color problem. From the drivers door forward, on BOTH sides of the car, it looks different. Picked the car up in the evening and noticed the color difference but was our first silver car and after looking at another in the lot it looked the same! No evidence of repainting or repair. Guess it's just that Acura quality - the robots must have had a bad day. Still haven't decided if we want to make this a warranty issue as we too don't really want to have it repainted, and it is only noticeable in certain lighting conditions.
Also, in looking at other silver cars, many have similar color differences depending on the angle and lighting (of course they could have been repainted).
Looking on the bright side I always complained that I love the look of our SLK but don't really see it when driving - so with the "X" I don't think too much of the paint job but love the interior and navi system which is what I see when driving! :4: |

The color looks GOOD on my SS.
It is good that your dealer has extra MDX for you to pick up and drive away. I believe I will have to wait few months if I am in the same situation like you. |

| Just curious! They actually let you pick another MDX after you already drove the car home. How long can you still get the car swap if problem found after you picked up the car? |

I assume this is depending on the dealer. By letting you swap the car, it is most likely on their cost. But since MDX is sold mostly at its MSRP, they probably won't lost any penny when they sale it as a USED car as well. |

My guess is that since it was the next day they hadn't processed the title yet so they just sold it as a NEW SS with just a few miles on it.
But why would Acura, the Zero defect tolerance company, even let these poorly painted cars out of the factory? Says something about this company if you ask me! |

| My 2002 SS looks fine. Very good customer service for your dealer to give you another car. Is it true that even though it has been sold, as long as car is not registered, it could be sold again as new? Who would ever know in any event. |

Same problem here. Driver Side front door. Silver
I noticed this about 2 months after I got it. I took it in and they couldn't see what I was talking about. It was a coudy day. At least they have a record of me reporting. We said forget about.
A year later it really started to get on our nerves, and while in California I asked that they repaint the door. Covered under warranty. They really couldn't deny becuase I had reported this everytime I went in for service. And everytime they could not see what I was talking about.
All in all the paint job on our MDX's sucks and that goes for the whole line of Acuras car also.
Maybe I'm just pissed because, the chips on the hood of my MDX are rusting already and I have a considerable amount of chips on my S4 and it hasn't rusted. |

I have the same paint issues a number of you are experiencing and it is not good. I have a unique insight into the problem as my fathers business is color/paint quality control....so naturally I was unhappy with the uneven robotic spray gun marks. Sophisticated real time optical measuring device should not allow such variations in quality.... Both my rear doors have pronounced stripe effects running left to right half way down the door that is only visible from 3/4 view about 20 feet or more away. It really looks like a poor repaint!
What is going on is a number of factors from speeding up the line due to high demand and not cleaning the spray guns long enough, to positioning of the start and finish points. Static charge/humidity levels in the plant on the day the vehicle is painted can dramatically change the outcome as well as the metalic flake size. The problem with my finish is a start/stop overlap issue. My hood appears 'cloudy' from being too thin with the robot not doing enough passes. Silver and light pearls are THE most difficult paint to handle correctly and no one does it better than the Germans!
EPA regulations in the US (and Canada) have also caused the paints to react and dry differently due to lack of certain VOCS or volatile drying agents that allow the paint to lay flat. Most of the new paints are much more difficult to handle because so many other factors have to be perfect in order for the final finish to be even and glossy. It should be an interesting comparison once the new US plant starts cranking out MDX's next year. The Germans seem to have figured out a way to get great results in the US plants so far..... |

These types of complaints are a major reason why I went with white. With non-metallic colors, it's also much easier to get a good paint match in touch-ups or even repaints, in my experience. It CAN be done correctly with metallics, but takes a higher skill level, I guess.
A positive note: I have almost 11K miles on my '02 now, and I can say that the paint is much less susceptible to chipping than other cars I have recently owned. A recent Subaru, in particular, probably had 20 times the amount of chipping. (But it was an excellent-looking, smooth, silver paint job). A BMW had more chips even though I never drove it on "bad" roads. I've driven on lots of sanded (actually gravelled) roads this winter, been showered with the stuff from semi's, and have only a single small chip on the hood. I can find more damage on the windshield than in the paint. I do have a "bra" I use in good weather, at least for trips, but I don't use it much in the winter when dirt and water would get behind it. (That would be abrasive to the paint, doing more damage than it would save). |
