I am trying to decide between the OEM side steps and running boards. Will not get the Maniks.
I know from reading earlier posts people consider the side steps sportier. I guess it's a matter of taste.
I also know we'll hardly use them as my kids are older. Maybe once in a while when taking the mother-in-law home.
The question I have is threefold:
- are the running boards that much bigger than the side steps that they'll get in the way when getting in or out of the car and not using them to step on?
- are the running boards quieter on the car than the side steps? Somebody mentioned the side steps are tubular and hollow and make a noise going through puddles
- is one sturdier than the other? |

ablatt,
Cancel that gold emblem order and with the money you save, get the side steps. If you are hardly going to use them, the side steps are less obtrusive. The running boards really do make the MDX look like a van. I mainly use my sidesteps to allow me to stand higher so I can clean the roof of my MDX. Good luck. |

| Thanks for the advice. What about BSM? |

| Per numerous comments/threads (do a search if you want a bunch) you want BSM to prevent or reduce dings from other cars. Certainly convinced me to order mine that way (even though I didn't list it in my accessories on order). Running boards should be illegal (because they make the X look like a van). |

I didn't read anything that suggested they should be illegal. I guess in terms of looks, I would agree. Although, for those that need to use them to get into the vehicle everytime, especially little kids, or the disabled, etc. , I would think the running boards would be more effective and safer than steps.
Otherwise, I agree they take something away from the styling. I think shiny steps adds something, like subtle customizing, but it's all in the eye of the beholder. |

I just ordered the SS Acura side steps from Tim because:
1. I like the way they look. The SS looks good IMHO and compliments other SS trim on the X
2. Something to stand on when putting ski's on the top or cleaning the top. |

I recommend BSM. They are functional and add to the looks of the MDX. :29: |

Excalibur, you are full of good advice.
Maybe I'll see if I can get gold-plated BSM to make my new MDX really BLING! |

| Yesterday, I did an installation of the black sidesteps which I ordered from Tim. It took about 1 hour 15 minutes and went very well. |

| I find the running boards to be totally non-obtrusive--you have to consciously try to use them because they don't stick out. Personally, I like their looks better than the side steps. I mounted them to make it easier to wash the car and to make it easier to use the roof racks. |

| So you don't have to swing your legs around them getting in or out of the car? They don't get in the way at all? |

| I have running boards, and they are not in the way at all. |

Nope--they don't stick out far enough to make you swing your legs out of the way. You have to step pretty close to the body of the car if you want to use them as a step.
I can't wait for my mother to visit to find out if they make it easier for her to step up into the vehicle--I still don't know if they will help in this regard. |

| Running Board will block more SNOW hitting the doors panels than side steps. It also has larger foot stepping area. |

| The 2nd time I test drove the X my dealer had two X's ready for delivery, one with side steps and one with running boards (same color). Both looked very nice and my wife and I could have gone either way. We decided on side steps because we thought they looked a little "sportier". You can't go wrong either way. |

Can some of you please post pics of the boards vs. steps?
Thanks. |

ablatt,
My vote is for steps. Yes it is a matter of personal preferance. Plus I find steps easier to clean / wax my X.
Good luck. |

For those interested in ordering the black side steps, we are needing only three more interested folks to express their intent to purchase from Tim. If we get 10 people, we will be able to get a 10% (~ $ 43) discount from Tim after he gives us the O.K. We have 7 interested to-date. The thread is in the Group Buys under:
http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...=&threadid=8725
There is also another thread in the Group Buys for the running boards. |

Thank you for the closeup pics.
Does anyone have any full shots - to get a sense of how the vehicle looks w/ boards/steps, as a whole?
Thanks again. |

Thanks for the add'l photos. The black sidesteps look quite nice on the dark vehicles.
Not to be a pain, but does anyone have any photos of sidesteps (chrome or black) or running boards on the Silver MDX?
Thanks folks! |

Are both of these SS the same year? If so, why are the mudguards black on one and body-colored on the other?
Thanks for posting the pics! |

MSandman,
More than likely, the owner of the SS MDX had the mudguards custom painted. The OEM mudguards come in black. |

What's wrong with stainless steel Maniks? I had mine for a year and everybody asks me where I got them. It makes the car very sharp.
