Cargo Liner vs Cargo Tray - Click HERE for Original Thread

I wonder what people think would be better to use to protect the cargo area? I generally carry clean equipment (not dirty tools) for work, groceries, and occasionally the dog goes in the back. Although the dog usually rides in the GF's car ( it is her dog).

HrdTsk,

The cargo tray is indispensible. It keeps the carpet pristine no matter what you carry in the back of the MDX. If you must carry a dog occaisionally, why not use both for extra protection? You can always put the cargo liner on top of the cargo tray.

There you go! Now someone is thinking outside the bun..... or....the tailgate?

Doesn't the cargo tray require that the third row seats are down, or am I mistaken (more than possible)?

Third row seats have to be folded down for the cargo tray.

But that's not true for the liner, right?

Liner is attached to the back of the third row seats, whether they are up or down, it doesn't matter.:2:

Cargo tray saved my seats from some gasoline once. My future father-in-law gave me his leaf blower to bring for repair. Only he placed it in the box sideways. My car stunk for a week, but at least none of it was absorbed into the fabric. I just aired out the cargo tray for a few days.

Hmm, My liner is attached to the Second row seats, so the third row is folded down. I recommend using both the liner and tray. I think they complement each other...

Belt and suspenders?

I am buying the liner as we speak (figuratively). Although the tray performs wonderfully, especially in terms of its ease of cleaning and moisture-proof-ness, its real disadvantage is that it must be removed from the car if ever you want to use the third seat. While the liner must be taken down for third row seat use, at least it can stay folded up in the car.

What we really need is a tray that will fold.

You can roll it up - it fits behind the 3rd row no problem.

"You can roll it up". That's excellent news! Now I am not sure I really want that liner that I just ordered. The trays work very well.
Thanks for the tip.

I know this is an old thread but I'm going to bump it because what we dog owners REALLY need is something like the tray that can somehow be attached to the back of the 3rd row seats with a cut down the middle to allow for raising a single third row seat. That way when the seats are up I don't have a huge cargo tray taking up space and I can lower raise one seat as needed.

This accessory would be ideal - no wasted space and a perfectly protected cargo area whether seats are up or down. Shouldn't be too difficult...!

I agree, Overtime. I went with both the tray and the fabric liner. While the protection they afford is great, they each wipe out the 3rd seat entirely. And installing/removing the liner takes a bit of time and effort, what with all the headrest-moving and tab-inserts that the thing entails (running around from back to front, left side, right side). But that liner does a particularly nice job of catching all the dog hair that otherwise gets on the sidewalls and seatbacks, etc.

If your dog is small enough, you might want to consider just throwing an airline-style kennel back there and keep the hound and hair contained that way.

Where does the liner "roll up"? Behind the second row?

I fold my liner and place it behind the third row. I roll the tray and place it behind the third row.

I don't really mind the dog hair getting on the sides of the cargo area or the back of the 2nd row but I do want to protect the floor from the muddy feet and other slop dragged in by dogs or soggy skiers. My dog is about 32" at the shoulders and 120lbs so a crate won't work :p .

Maybe even a liner cut out perfectly and designed to cover the floor of the cargo area with the 3rd row down but that stays attached to the back of the 3rd row seats independently so they can be moved up or down with no loss of cargo room. It could also be cut to allow access to the headrest storage space.....perfect....
