I've read of several others experincing brake clunking and clicking due to "floating" calipers. I've heard many people say they don't have the problem (though am confused why some seem to gloat over this on the boards), while others profess they have the problem and it's due to "large calipers" (I doubt that logic as my A6 has much larger calipers and it's never clunked).
Pulling me to the side, the dealer told me it's an issue (even said he wouldn't want a $40K vehicle to clunk) and many have complained to him. Outside of one post, where a user said shims were installed, has anyone else found a fix? Are others getting shims installed upon request?
This can't be present on every MDX as a) I never heard it on our test drive and b) mine crept up on me, growing much louder as 15,000 miles wore on. And therefore, if it's not present on every MDX, then something can be done to fix it... or at least logic would dictate as such.
I'll be calling Acura this afternoon to see if they have any news. |

| I have this issue with my X. I haven't really had the time to deal with the dealer yet. I am interested in finding out what you find out. Keep us posted! |

Welcome to the board colemanpc.
I'm not sure if gloating is the right way to describe posters sounding off with no problems. You very well could be referring to me so let me explain my thinking on this subject.
The way I see it a problem is the motivating factor of many posts on this board. (Kind of like someone reading the board for a while then the first post is a problem/complaint?) Nothing really wrong with this IMHO but sometimes balance is needed so that anyone reading the board doesn't come to conclusion that everyone is having a particular problem. In my opinion people with no problems have been too silent giving the casual reader here the wrong impression.
I like polls for that reason. Some polls indicate widespread problems, others bring to light that specific problems are not that common.
The thread you were referring to (shims) is here: http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...15&pagenumber=1
I'm not sure how common this clicking is, my MDX does not click yet. (no gloat intended) It has been mentioned here a lot.
Why not start a poll and see how common it is? |

Thanks for the warm welcome BaldEagle.
I appreciate your candor re: casual readers. And for those casual readers out there, I can assure you the MDX (clunking or not) is the best SUV out there, hands down. It's as smart and correct a choice as one can make... and I remember it everytime I get 23-24mpg on a (very comfortable) road trip.
That said, there is still an issue some owners are expereincing. I think it's a problem that can be solved because:
a) not every owner has the problem
b) mine has grown more noticable as the miles driven have grown
Like I said, I'll call Acura and report their "official" stance on this issue, which we all know - can vary greatly from what a dealer will often tell the customer. |

My 2001 MDX Touring had the "click", I wont call it a clunk.
My dealer in NH "lubed" the calipers as part of the 15,000 service. I haven't had a click or clunk in 13,000 miles!

| Our X has a definate clunk (pronounced when stopping). Dealer lubed our brakes as well but no improvement. Dealer claims that they can now fix the problem. The X will go in at the end of the year. Will keep you posted .... |

colemanpc,
I think that you will find the existing poll to show that this is a significant problem, I believe "a lot" of owners have been frustrated with this one. |

| I haven't heard the brake clicking, but have definitely heard the gas tank sloshing sound! I also hear what seems to be a thud when coming to a stop on occasion. I thought it might be the tranny downshifting, but I'm not sure. It doesn't happen all the time and I can't reproduce it on demand, it's definitely not The Infamous Thud. Any ideas? |

My 03 does not make any of the familiar MDX mating calls so far.
Although my 01 X did them all!:1: |

Yep, I do ... sure sounds like the brakes to me if it happens just as the vehicle actually stops (not while slowing down). If this is what you are hearing, then I think that it is the brake issue. |

| I will admit for an otherwise quiet vehicle. The brake thud catches me off guard when it happens. Has the brake shim worked for those that had it done? I am coming up on my 3750 oil change so am looking for ammo. |

| Thanks srpbep, I guess I do have the brake problem. I'll have the dealer check it out at my 7500 mile service and report back if they are able to solve it. |

The shims are still working. I heard someone said that it was not recommended but I have not notice any changes on the X except for the fact that the calipers don't click anymore.:4: |

I never understand why they say it's not recommended but will do it anyway if you insist.
I have read on here thicker grease on the guides seems to work also. |

| Thank you for the reply ssMDX01. I am going to ask dealer about it. Will let everyone know if it helps me as well. |
