Tapping noise coming from glove box - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm getting a t t t t noise when I go over small bumps, I open the glove box and it stops, when I close the glove box it seems ok for a while then starts again, it's nothing in the glovebox, I thought maybe it was plastic parts of the glove box sticking to the dash slightly. Has anyone had this problem?

Tell Morimoto to get out of the glove box and go home, his mother is waiting!
I have had this "problem" although it is sporadic. Seems like I resituated stuff in the glove baox and it went away, but then it came back again last night. Haven't investigated it thoroughly yet. Anyone else?
There was another thread about this awhile back. Mine does it occasionally and I found that if you spray some silicone on the sides of the glove box when it's open, it stops for a while. I think the sides are rubbing against the side of the dash.

Yeah, I have that same t t t t t t tick coming from the glove box.
just like you, i open the box and close it and it stops.

interestingly, only notice when I head home from work (northbound)?????

Solution - turn radio up
DIdn't someone say to put a little dish soap on your finger and rub a film of it on the sides where it might be rubbing? I think that was for the back seat, but I'm not sure if it's the same as the glove box.

-- same litle noise here too - opening the glove box stops it and it is sporadic - but a bit annoying none the less. I guess i'll try the soap trick and see.
Just turn the stereo up a LOT louder! Problem solved :)

MD MDX,
You asked about this old thread... here it is. Let us know what the dealer tells you.
I have had this glove box tick sound ever since
I picked up car in Dec.

Told dealer twice - Island Acura on Long Island NY
They said they tightened screws 2nd time
1st time they coulnt find noise

I noticed when its cold, the noise is more
frequent.

May just have to live w/it
Will tell dealer again, never know

The noise so far has just disappeared. I haven't had it for maybe a month now. I think it went away after I had it detailed.

My glove box only "tapped" when it was cold. I solved the problem by spraying silicone on a rag and wiping down the sides of the open glovebox. It hasn't made any noise since then. :D

I had the same problem but it is now fixed. If you open the glove box you will see a piece of plastic jetting out, about one inch from the top, on the right side. I took some 3/8" rubber foam weatherseal and cut a strip an inch long. I then cut the thickness down and used the self stick tape of the weatherseal to cover this piece of plastic. This completely solved my problem.

I have heard the same ticking noise coming from the glovebox area on my MDX. The noise started when the weather became cold this month. After the car warms up or I open the glovebox, the noise goes away.

I took the MDX into the dealer today. They said this was the first they had heard of this problem, but were able to fix it. The service manager said they re-aligned the glove box slightly in order to stop the rattling (I suspect the noise was the plastic glovebox brace rattling against the side of the box). So far so good.

CanMDX,

Did the dealers adjustment have any positive affect on the visual alignment of the glovebox? Mine sticks out farther on the left side than the right, enough to show a gap. Just noticed the ticking within the last month. Annoying if listening to the radio. Don't hear it when listening to CD's with the volume up.

I had the same problem with my glove box since I picked up the car. I did everything possible: Silicon, adjustment etc. to no avail. The last time I was at the dealer I asked to look at the problem.

Here is the kicker: When I returned to pick up the car, the dealer showed me a large hook -- roughtly 24" long and 1/2 inch wide. It looked like something you use to go shark fishing. Anyway, to my surprise the dealer said that they removed the hook from behind my glovebox.

The dealer mentioned that maybe I put a hook in my glovebox that slid behind the panel -- I can tell you a for a fact that I had never seen this hook before in my life. Anyway, my guess is that this was a type of hook car companies use in their plants to put parts in their place. I am almost sure of this, since I had a chance to tour an auto plan a few years back and saw similar types of hooks use to move crates and boxes.

Needless to say the problem is completely resolved. No noise, rattle or anything else for that matter. However, I am a bit worried about Acura Quality Control. What is next -- I will find a robot arm inside the engine :-)

ootyboy,

Great story. Glad the rattling is fixed. Makes you wonder what's really making that thumping noise in the gastank!

took it to the dealer and they changed the lock on it and never heard it since :) .

I have the same tapping from the glove box and always much more first thing in the morning. The first thing I thought was that it was temperature related, since it only started happening now with the colder weather. So is it the lock or the sides? And I wonder why the temperature seems to effect the rate at which it happens? Oh well, maybe Acura will have a TSB for this soon.:)

Sounds as if the plastic parts are rubbing together. One of the other replies suggested silicon, but I think it might absorb and leave a stain. There is a product called "dry lube", comes in a spray can, and should not stain.

I installed a wood kit that includes the glove box strip. I had a hard time getting it in because of lack of clearance between the top of the glove box door and the dash - i.e. the clearance is very tight. Perhaps this lack of room is causing your problem?

Good luck . . .

I have the same problem with the glovebox. It seems worse when it is cold out.

So, I'm not alone. I've been hearing this noise for a couple of weeks, mainly first thing in the morning and when it's cold. I couldn't track it down until my wife was in the passenger seat and she could tell that it was coming from the glove box.

I scheduled an appointment with the Acura dealer to deal with tapping noise. I will let you what they do to fix the problem.
By the way does the visual allignment of your glove box appear off. My left side sticks farther out than the right.

my 2002 tour with nav just started the noise only when cold if open the box and close noise goes away have to check the alignment and maybe silicone the sides of box, also i will check for any protruding plastic i'll let you know what fixes it only 1500 miles and just noticed but the wheather just got a little chilli-er here so i assume the problem will be in cold areas only never heard in warm wheather at all. it should be a simple fix. :D :D

Mine had the ticking noise a while back. I took it to the dealer to get it fixed. They changed my lock thingy and haven't had the problem since. :)

I've had mine in twice for the glove box rattle. As in other cases, I only hear it when the weather cools down (which is all the time up here - ;) ).

The first time, Acura was not able to fix it - they tried re-aligning the glove box, but the 'tick tick' came back. (BTW, I had no visible alignment issues with the glovebox.) I tried all the recommendations listed on this site myself, but no success - still rattled.

I had it in again to Acura last week (4 months later) and they now know exactly what to do to correct the problem. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the specifics (maybe the lock as mentioned), but I suspect Acura has a Service bulletin describing the fix. No more rattles.:)

I use my auto-start to warm up the SUV and the noise goes away. I heard It also only when the interior was cold, since I had my clifford alarm with autostart the interior is warmed up to operating temperature before I get in and I no longer hear the noise. Someone told me about using silicone like armor all on the sides of the glove box when opened and that would quiet it down, BTW there was another thread on this subject

What sort of gas mileage do you get in the winter, I let my car run for a bout 10 minutes, than drive about 7 miles to the train every morning, my gas mileage is about 10mpg when I do this.

I'm getting 13-21 mpg all times when I warm it up or don't:D

Did you find out anything on this? I may have the same problem. When I accelerate from stop, I hear a clunk from the glove box. It goes away when opened.

Wow that's a long time to idle, even in winter I would think. Engines run best under light load, and warm up quicker too. No reason to race it, but that's raw gas getting you no where....IMHO
Canmdx
If you're hearing a clunk during acceleration, this may be a different problem. The noise I heard was a constant 'tap, tap, tap' when the vehicle was cold. I believe it was caused by a support piece hitting the glovebox. The cold weather presumably made the plastic support less flexible and more likely to 'tap'.

I checked the Acura work order and it was apparently fixed by adding padding to the glovebox area. The noise has not returned. :)

Basically, it appears that Acura cannot get rid of the tapping noise. I have had my glove box replaced and adjusted twice all to no avail. It is worse when it is cold. It looks like it is something you just have to live with-no matter how ridiculous that is.
Warzau
You know what it might be also,...

Well this would happend to my Civic, the tap tap tap. what I deducted was the rubber bumper would become hard in cold weather and would tap the plastic potion where it contacted. So what I did was take a small patch of the loop section of velcro and place it where the bumper meets the plastic and the sound went away. You could try this it worked for my Honda civic may work for the X. Hopefully this problem doesnt occur when I pick mine up.
Canmdx
Yes, Acura can fix the "tap tap tap". They repaired mine a few weeks back and it hasn't returned.

They added padding to the area behind the glovebox that was tapping. It may have been a hardened rubber bumper, or a plastic support column which was less flexible - but regardless, by adding padding to this area, the noise goes away.

There should be a service bulletin from Acura. Ask your dealer to check it out, if they are still claiming they can't fix it.
