Towing Packages Only - who's in? This is the complete package (hitch, coolers, etc.)
dleasman
I would be in... Definately!

I was going to order the kit from Tim anyway.

Oh man... I'ts tempting, very tempting...:13:

Funny, I just spoke with Tim on this yesterday. The kit includes, Acura hitch, separate power steering and transmission coolers, and the wiring harness. No ball is included, probably because of the range of choices, but you get the Acura 'A' receiver cover. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow, too.

This represents an additional $50 savings, so count me in.

Geesh, what do you guys expect for $40K - Acura would probably go out of business if they included $20 worth of balls! They gave you clunking brakes, quiet turn signals, plod, thin windshields, etc. and you want to be able to pay MSRP (or MSRP+) and expect them to include the hitch balls . . .
Dr.X
How does the factory tow package (just the hitch), compare to the aftermarket hidden hitch or draw-tite versions? Looks, Quality, Clearance (will it clear a full-size spare tire?)
DaleB
Definitely clears a full size spare, it's competitive with most any other hitch except in it's normal Acura pricing.
BlueStreak
We need more takers. We need 10 soon or I have to go on my own.

Who else is in?

EDITED - Due to lack of 10 buyers and I need a ***** to tow at xmas, I purchased one today.

I am very interested in participating in the tow package group buy, however, I have a a few questions that I hope someone can answer.

Regarding the power steering and trans coolers. What type of connections and hoses are used? I would hope that these are not just cut and hose clamp connections. Threaded fittings with threaded hose connections are what I would prefer.

Is the trans and PS cooler a single unit or two separate units? Does the cooler installation create any access problems in the engine compartment? Is ground clearance affected?

Finally, what is the price being offered for the group buy?

Apologize for the numerous questions.

I spoke with Jamie this evening. One ball is included in the 2003 tow package, as well as the extension it is attached to as seen
bellow. He was not sure about its size.

edit 12/13/02: it turns out that the ball isn't included with the package from Acura, but complements of my dealer. sorry for the misinformation.

I would like to order my hitch soon... Do we have a group buy going here or what?

Also looking to buy the all weather floor mats. Still undecided on the cargo tray.

Due to a time constraint, I couldn't wait and went ahead ordered mine. Coulda used that 10% off for gas money. Drat!

The extension was included in my hitch for 02, but not the ball. I guess that proves Acura is trying to make some improvements in every area...nice to think so anyway!
MDXOBX
I picked up the 03 last week with the tow package installed. Received the extention but not a ball.

Got my pkg yesterday and there is NO ball included.

Jamie - Did I get shorted?

Also, I saw the 03 install instructions say there is a P/S cooler installed on my X, but it is a straight tube with no cooling fins on it. Was this on pre 03 models? Install instructions say to remove this unit and discard.

Why don't you guys save yourselves a few HUNDRED dollars and just buy the Acura tranny and PS coolers from Tim and purchase a Drawtite or Hidden Hitch ($120). I don't undertand why people purchase the Acura tow package. It is a rip.

Hmm good question. Somewhere I think I read that Tim may be restricted by Acura in that he must sell them as a package...

Are you sure?
Why does the Honda/Acura hitch attach at both the sides and the center, while the aftermarket only attach at the sides?
Why does the Honda/Acura hitch use 8 main bolts and 4 others while most aftermarket use only 6?
Maybe Honda/Acura know something about there vehicals that the aftermarket does not know?
Maybe it is for crash worthyness that does not need to be tested by aftermarket companies?
Maybe its just wasted overdesige???
dleasman
The whole package, in a group buy, would be under $500. I think this is a pretty good deal, considering that you get:

Hitch
Drawbar
Wiring Harness (no splicing)
Mount for the wiring harness
Transmission Cooler
Power Stearing Cooler

If one WERE to get just the coolers, you would end up spending at least the difference by the time you get the hitch, drawbar, and buy a wiring harness with no mount at all...

Why not just get the factory hitch? It's actually a really nice one!

Also, keep in mind that most other manufacturers of lux-utes all charge around $1000 for their towing packages, and they don't even come with any coolers!

Mercedes Benz charges $1000, as does BMW.

In the case of my Mercedes, I did go out to http://www.hitch-web.com to get my hitch for only about $250. But it still cost me another $30 for a wiring kit.

Again... If you get everything I mentioned above for the MDX for around $500... That's actually a really good deal.

With the Acura hitch you can carry a standard tire underneath. If you're getting the hitch for actual towing, you'll want a full size spare instead of that compact crap. If you're getting a hitch for a carrier, and stick with the compact spare and get a flat, you'll have to put the standard tire inside, it won't fit underneath according to what I've read on another thread here. Another thing to consider is that the Acura package includes wiring for the trailers stop lights.

Has anybody had the Acura tow package installed by anyone other than the dealer. I don't feel comfortable installing myself and hate to pay the dealer $500 for installation

BlueStreak:

Acura does not give owners a Ball attachment, but I provide them for clients purchasing their MDX through me. The typical size for someone installing a full Hitch Kit is 2 Inches. Todd just forgot to offer you yours when I was away. Just let me know what you need and it will be on its way.

Jamie S.

...for clearing this up. The picture shows the ball but as you stated, the pkg does NOT include one as standard. Appreciate you setting the record straight.

2" is what I use. No rush. I understand Todd was quite helpful. Even sent me a bottle of trans and p/s fluids. Appreciate the service.

You guys are a class act, and your survey will reflect that.

I am very interested. I need to read up on this "group buy" process (and I will), but I am definitely interested.
