Is that English?!?!

...LOL
My changer still skips (and I'm waiting for the replacement) so I can't usually get through a disc without cursing at the changer. That said, I'm currently spinning:

1. Talking Heads: Sand in the Vaseline (retrospective compilation) Disc 1 (the early years).

2. Violent Femmes: Debacle (also a compilation)

3. Ken Burns Jazz Box (Disc 4/5: Miles, Getz, Brubeck, etc.)

4. U2: All that you can't leave behind

5. Santana: Supernatural

6. Radiohead: Kid A

Great idea for a post! Here's another odd mix

1. Balkans without Borders (new wave hits of Eastern Europe, forward by Andrei Codrescu)

2. Tuatara

3. Fear of Music - Talking Heads

4. Zappa

(say what you want about the Bose system, I was sitting in the car wash line one day listening to the marimba break in "St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast" - it just doesn't get much better):D :D

5. Holst - the Planets

6. Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue

Guess who this car really belongs to!

  • Baby Mozart
  • Baby Bach
  • Baby Beethoven
  • Kenny Loggins (return to pooh corner)
  • A couple of MP3 mixes (smash mouth, natalie merchant, dave matthews band, macy gray, creed, blink 182, matchbox 20, googoo dolls, sugar ray, everclear, sophie b hawkins, vertical horizon)

Well, you'll have smart kids! I confess to just evicting Backstreet Boys, it would be OK if they didn't want to listen to the same two songs over and over. Got them on a Warren Zevon kick now, might as well bring em up right.

For the little ones, you need to try the Baby Zappa CD - Raffi's ripped my flesh...

Hey Mesa, which Tull you listening to? I almost picked up Thick as a Brick a couple days ago, and figure it's time to introduce the boys to Aqualung.
Cat Stevens
Errol Garner - Great Vintage Jazz Piano
Hiroshima
Santana - 1st album
Loius Prima
Clapton Unplugged

The just unloaded Tull was the best of - the remixed guitar on Locomotive Breath on this release is AWESOME.

In between last mix and this was the LOTR cd set.
1.Aerosmith
2.Frankie Ruiz- La leyenda
3.Enrique Iglesias
4.Duran Duran- Decade
5.Enya
6. Gilberto SantaRosa- Oro Salsero
Eclectic mix with latin flavor!

Tunes for the day:

Kronos Quartet - Pieces of Africa

Paul Simon - Rhythym of the Saints

Peter Gabriel (OK it's a best hits, but I just love listening to "Big Time" while cruisin around)
I've got:

two Peter Gabriel home made CDs (mostly rare songs and soundtrack songs, thanks to IRC and Napster)

Pet Shop Boys - Bilingual

Michel Rivard - Un trou dans les nuages

Rush - Moving Pictures

Filter
B-52's
Enigma
Jesus and Mary Chain
Cranberries
The Cure - Remixes
Great Thread!!!!

1. Buena Vista Social Club (This was the 1st CD I played in the truck, it was awesome!!!)
2. Eagles
3. Mariah Carey
4. REM
5. Rolling Stone
6. The Police

I haven't heard everything yet, the truck is 3 days old!!!
Good choices, Mom, love that Buena Vista CD! My 4-yr old sings along with that first tune. If you ever get a chance, check out the video documentary by the same name, Ry Cooder put it together.

Sounds like you're off to a good start!
Thanks MDX Mom,

You got me thinking about Buena Vista, so I'm now loaded up with latin. BTW, I picked up the video on Buena Vista and really enjoyed it.

1. Beuna Vista Social Club
2. Gypsey Kings - The Best Of
3. Cafe Cubana - a collection CD I picked up at Starbucks a couple of years ago - GREAT!
4. Putamayo presents CUBA
5. Cesario Evora - Cafe Atlantico
6. Gloria Estefan - Greatest Hits

I wish I could speak spanish, Cuban, and brazilian. Then I could understand what is being sung on CD's 2 through 5. I do love the music though. CD5 is excellent. Soulful ballads and really great sax work.

My MDX really cooks with salsa!

What other latin, particularly Cuban, music is recommended?

KOT!
If you really like salsa, Gilberto SantaRosa is really a must. Other good ones are Ruben Blades (the earlier albums), Juan Luis Guerra y los 4-40. For merengue, Olga Tanon is pretty good.Of course, Gipsy Kings (you already have it). Try the Mambo Kings album, it's also pretty good.
Wow, nice set! I'll have to check out the Putayamo release, that's a great label. Thanks for the tips on the others, I'll check 'em out..

I've got one more good Cuban release for you - this is an elemental release (read unproduced) that a good friend of mine gave me. I recorded this from CD to cassette - and to be honest - *I've never used the tape player in the MDX (after what, after 4 months now - I've been too blown away by having a CD player!) Guess I should check it out...*

Anyway, the band:

Marc Ribot and Los Cubanos Postizos

don't know the name of the CD or where you'll find it, maybe check out CDNow.

Oh yeah, one more - some of Los Lobos got together with Mitchell Froom under the name of Latin Playboys. It's not at all like typical Los Lobos - the tunes are mixed in with mix in street noises and samples. Very interesting, pretty dissonant, worth checking out. The name of the CD is "Dose".

And thanks for getting me into this Cuban/Latin vein, I'll have to load up a Latin set tomorrow...

Wow, thanks for the recommendations - keep them coming!

KOT with a latin beat!
A note from "MDX Dad"
PONCHO SANCHEZ ROCKS!
Be sure to get the CD with "Watermelon Man"
I really enjoy listening to it in my 'new' 1997 Honda Accord which MDX Mom used to drive.

3. Lenny Kravits Greatest Hits

4. Blues Clues the musical

3. Billy Holiday: Best of

4. Bob Marley: Exodus

5. Sting

6. Louis Amstrong: Best of

Way cool, NewJack. Way cool!
Many of you are probably unfamiliar with St. Urho Day, celebrating the day when the great St. Urho drove the grasshoppers out of the wild grape vineyards of Finland, waving his arms and shouting "Heinasirkka, heinasirkka, meme taalta hiteen!" (Grasshopper, grasshopper, go away from here!).

It is a day of great celebration here in northern Minnesota and through the UP; the Finns dress in royal purple and Nile green, and do a sunrise dance on the lakeshores and hillsides shouting those famous words. Heavy drinking is also involved.

So, in celebration, here is my St. Urho's day set:

1. Hedningarna - three Swedish instumentalists and two female Finnish vocalists who use an ancient singing style. The instuments are ancient as well, although they're pretty heavily wired with electronics. (Interesting sounds when you patch a hurdy gurdy through a phase shifter).

The music is adapted from the original pagan cultures that lived north of the Arctic Circle - who make the Celts look like a bunch of boy scouts. I saw this band in a little bar in Uppsala, and more recently on a US tour, they're remarkable.

2. Varttina - in the same vein, a bit lighter, some mean accordions in this band

3. The Northside Music sampler: a 70 minute CD sampling a lot of these bands; picked this for $3 at a Borders bookstore.

I don't think you'll find any of these on CDNow, but there is a little record company out of Minneapolis that carries this stuff, check 'em out at http://www.noside.com

The Irish have a similar thing going on soon, not a strong thing up here, but I'll be loading up some tunes from the Isles soon, the Pogues are always a fun band.

So I was trying to figure out how to post an MP3 file to this site, when I found that Varttina have posted the song I wanted to send on their own web site -

so, for something different, pick up the mp3 version of Katariina at

http://www.noside.com/Catalog/Catal...sp?Album_ID=111

One of my 4-yr olds favorite tunes, stand back from the speakers.

I thought I would put in Jennifer Knapp, Steven Curtis Chapman, Jaci Valasquez, WOW Worship, and Plus One!

It beats having my kids listen to the local Disc Jockeys and their foul mouths!

Moby - Play (fun!)
Steely Dan
15-60-75
Get this combo--

Travis Tritts (greatest hits)

My Initial load is the following:

3. Traffic - The low spark of high heeled boys

4. The Story of the Moody Blues - Legend of a Band

5. Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.

What a great set, back when music was music. Lots better than that noise kids listen to nowadays.

Wait, didn't my dad say that about Pink Floyd?
1. George Benson - Give Me The Night

2. Glen Frey - Solo Collection

3. K.T. Oslin- 80's Ladies

4. Christopher Cross

5. Ronnie Milsap - Greatest Hits

6. Paul Simon - Negotiations And Love Songs

Usually always have 70's, 80's, and country in some sort of configuration. Purchased a CD recorder so I could make my own mixes on each CD, since the Bose can't randomly pick from the stack. I really miss this feature that my Sony ES changer has in my Accord.
Here are my favorite ones:

1. Steely Dan - Two Against Nature
2. Enoch Light & the Light Brigade (a '40s swing mix, I'm a big Benny Goodman fan, Gene Krupa was my Great Uncle)
3. Buena Vista Social Club/ Ibrahim Ferrer
4. Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
5. Jamiroquai - Travelling Without Moving
6. Pure Funk '70s (the "as seen on TV" one....an excellent disco mix!)

You guys have some great musical taste!

Mesa and Tim,
If you guys are Gene Krupa fans I have 4 or 5 of his albums including a "still-in-the-cellophane" one of a 1956 drum battle between him and Buddy Rich. I also own an audio CD burner so you guys can guess what will be in my next load. Also, Tim with all that you have done for the folks in this forum I would be more than happy to burn you a copy since Gene is long gone so the Napster Nazis are unlikely to come after us!

That would be my cue.... You can still purchase this CD from http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...3443588-4026343 so copying it for distribution wouldn't only be immoral, but also illegal.

Without the current recording industry's business model - I certainly wouldn't be able to afford to own an MDX... I think all those people who use Napster, etc... seem to forget that it doesn't only affect the large corporations, but every person involved in the business (especially those who receive royalties).

Without taking this forum on a large off-topic tangent, I'll leave it at that... and won't respond to any flames I'm sure I'm about to receive -- those you can send me via email (keep them off the board).

Regards.

Rail
Rail,
You made an excellent point and the only reason I offered to copy the album for those two guys is I had absolutely no idea they were still available for purchase. I would actually rather purchase a professionally made CD, especially this one, than make one from a record. So out of respect to both you and the recording industry in general, I recind my previous piracy offer.

Hey now, I see a lot of you have been Asleep at the Wheel when it comes to posting your CDs lately. Even Steely Dancall up there in NH has been pretty quiet about this. I'd Relish the chance to see some more of these, although I know a lot of you have had your CD changers Zappa'd by the 4-5 button problem. Still, we didn't pay all this Money for Nothing, so let's get this thread Rock and Rolling again.

In fact, it would be nice if Some Girls would post some of their tunes. Why, it would be like a Brand New Day!

You guys and your digitized music. Baaah. If you want REAL music, and lots of hard to find music, check out The Elusive Disc. I think they do an entirely internet business these days. Or you could come listen to my husband's collection on his most amazing system. Nirvana. Since we almost never listen to anything but Christian music anymore, (and believe me there is some great stuff), our collection is pretty much wasted. But you guys can come listen if you want! If you like old jazz, old rock n roll, classical...whatever, we have it. Hubby used to spend whole weekends at record shows. Now he's more into his motorcycles.

Wow, cool site Rail! JA was the first concert I went to, and I've always been a big fan of Jorma Kaukonen. But MB, at the Filmore, heck, that's like being at Woodstock (the real one). Cool!
1. Desire
"He said "Where you goin' I said, "No place special"

2. Time out of Mind
Highlands - the story in this song is so long, it wanders off on an unrelated tangent. I think.

3. Joan Osborne
for "Man in the Long Black Coat"
...people don't live or die, people just float...

4. Richard Thompson - Shoot out the Lights
it just seems to fit

5. Leonard Cohen - The Future

6. Michelle Shocked - Arkansas Traveler

So Happy Birthday! To all of us that have lived through these things, and those that can reach back... :)
Are there no Prince fans out there???

1. Sign of the Times (vol 1) - Prince

2. Sign of the Times (vol 2) - Prince

3. Under the Cherry Moon - Prince

4. Greatest Hits (vol 1) - Prince

5. Diamonds and Pearls - Prince

6. Tear the roof of the sucker - Funkadelic

Today, I'm featuring this mix:

1. Wilco -- (Disc 1)
2. Liz Phair -- Whip Smart
3. Lyle Lovett -- Joshua Judges Ruth
4. Tom Waits -- Heartattack and Vine
5. Uncle Tupelo -- Anodyne
6. Talking Heads -- Fear of Music

Heck, after I got the MDX 2 weeks ago, one of the first things I did was to purchase two 48 disc wallets (1 for each door) to give me a lot more variety. I love the ease of the in-dash changer, as I had been used to single disc versions for years.

Tomorrow, I just might have to get more contemporary!

Dean
I'm here Clokspeed! I noticed that you didn't have anything any newer than Diamonds & Pearls. I too have a hard time listening to anything more recent than Sign O The Times.

I'm still waiting for my MDX, but my Durango has a 6-disc changer with:

1) R.E.M. - Reveal (completely subpar effort IMHO)

2) Black Crowes - Lions (see note below)

3) Pete Yorn - musicforthemorningafter (awesome)

4) Glen Phillips - demos burned off of Napster (any Toad the Wet Sprocket fans out there? You've got to check out Glen's solo stuff, as well as that of Lapdog (the rest of the band's new band) - go to http://www.glenphillips.com and http://www.lapdogmusic.com)

5) Prince - Sign O The Times (Disc 2)

6) Whiskeytown - Pneumonia demos burned off of Napster

*note: some artists use Napster as an alternative method of distribution - willingly letting fans have access to music they decide not to publish or for some reason cannot publish - Napster is not INHERENTLY evil :-)

Those of you with kids will appreciate this:
I rarely get to listen to anything but 1 SONG! My son (3 yrs. old now) has taken a liking to Lickin' by the Black Crowes. The song does rock, but I've heard it like 500 times now! He now sings some of the lyrics - which is hysterical! At least we appear to be beyond Barney!

In my six-Cd changer I have 7 (count them, seven) Jimmy Buffett CD's!

2) Sponge - Rotting Pinata
3) Tool - Lateralus : latest in the deck & it's pure WOW
4) NIN - Broken
5) Toadies - Rubberneck
6) Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual

I've read lots of complaints about the BOSE, but in all honesty, when it's cranked, it rocks! I haven't listened to any classical or jazz in the MDX yet, so it could falter there. In general, it's really not that bad of a system.

Being, I suspect, a few years older than most of you, my current selection will probably seem a bit archaic and eclectic but here goes:
Bond by Bond
The Dream is Alive & The Blue Planet soundtrack from the IMAX films (because of a personal history of space program involvement -sentimental)
Water From the Well - The Chieftains (Scottish ancestry)
The Eagles - Their Greatest Hits - the Eagles (acquired on the corner in Winslow Arizona on our western trip)
Ricky Martin by Ricky Martin - (a favorite of she-who-must-be-obeyed)
I Love Beach Music - various artists (hey we do live on the South Carolina Coast after all)

IF grandbaby Wiley is onboard then the collection gets modified with:
Bear in the Big Blue House
Walt Disney's Children's Favorite Songs
Classic Disney vII

Jake, nice collection, I've seen that Lucinda Williams has been touring around, bet she gives a dynamite concert. Most recently listening to Richard & Linda's 'Shoot out the Lights', what a great CD. Also, I rediscovered an RT tune called "She Steers by Lightning", which must be DMor's theme song. :)

Now that you've mentioned it, I'll have to dig out some Leonard Cohen...

Well...now that you've mentioned it....maybe! :)

Some of my fav's

Acoustic Highway / Craig Chaquico (great driving music and lives in the CD changer)
Eagles / hell freezes over (or any of their stuff)
Enya / (have it all)
Ani Difranco...hey I liked Ricki Lee Jones too!
Poe
Godsmack (some of it)
Pearl Jam
Metallica (some of it)

Wait! Is that more than 6 :) I like all the oldies...Jethro Tull, Steppenwolf, Procol Harem, Pink Floyd and too many to count/remember.

Dislike Courtney Love and heavy scream/yelling metal

I am both voluntarily and sometimes involuntarily influenced by my 18 year old's taste in music. :)

Hey now, Remery and I are having a sensitive guy moment here. You're probably not aware we're both accomplished musicians, with a deep sense of history. (Well, as much as we can remember.)

But yea, this morning I swept 14 inches of snow off the 8 decking boards that are nailed down and the 7 that are laying there waiting to be put in place. I'll see if I can get some pix up over in the hot tub thread, 'bout time we resurrected that one again, anyway.

You lightweights oughtta come to Buffalo in mid January sometime ;)

Strange enough though, it's 45 degrees and sunny this morning. Maybe I'll lay outside and get a tan :)

I am probably one of the youngest on the board at age 20. Furthermore, I am very likely one of a few that listen to rap music, so my choices might not be in line with the rest of the posts.

1. Petey Pablo
2. Too Short
3. Sublime
4. Kottenmouth Kings
5. Pink
6. Ludacris

I like a variety of music, but at this time of year (Christmas and New Years) I go back to my youth with songs and artists,
1. Dougie McLean - Tribute (old Scottish folk songs with a new beat)
2. Rod Stewart - Great American Song Book
3. Paul MCCartney - Back in the U.S. disc one
4. Paul McCartney - Back in the U.S. disc two
5. Sting/Police mix from Kazaa on the web
6. Assorted non-Beatle "Brit hits" downloaded from Kazaa.

Hey GreatScot - glad you resurrected this thread, I was just thinking about doing this last week as I was loading my Christmas tunes:

1. Frank Zappa - "Watch out where the huskies go..." just wouldn't be Christmas without it.

2, 3. Sting - I Saw Three Ships and Angel Gabriel - off the "Very Special Christmas - CD collection"

4. "Strange Angels" - Laurie Anderson. Technically not a Christmas album (unlike FZ?), but has a Christmas sound to it.

5. A Jolly Reggae Christmas - Merry Christmas, Mon!

6. Government Mule. Not Christmas at all, but they really kick butt!

Hey GreatScot - got two good ones for you - Ashley McLean, dynamite fiddle player, and Hamish McDoodle

Go to MP3.com and do a search for "Bagpipes from Hell" You'll love it!

Christmas cheer...

For the record, when I get my X in the next 60 days, the 6 CD's I'll be taking with me to the dealership are:

1. W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol (naturally)
2. The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over
3. Don Henley - Building the Perfect Beast
4. Fish - Sunsets on Empire
5. Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
6. Information Society - Hack
