This site has given us so much useful information. Thanks to all who post.
We are picking up our Mahogony MDX with Nav today and are really excited.
We are going to put in some accessories ourselves including the roof rack and running boards. For those who did the same, did anyone have any problems doing either? Any suggestions to make it easier? Thanks for any help.

Congrats Memphis, the big day! Drop us some pix when you get a chance!
You might want to try a search on the site for roof rack (or other accessories) - I recall some discussions on this a while back.
Enjoy! |

What part of Memphis are you from?
My wife and I are from Memphis. Our parents still live there, so we return often. We also ordered a Mahogany, due to arrive next week. Good luck with you new ride! |

Photo request for memphis:
In the process of installing your own roof rack you will be opening up the roof channel covers. If you are going to take pictures, would you do a close-up of the channel with the cover off? Particularly toward either of the extremities of the channel. I feel there is a way to add internal mounting blocks to this channel that (along with the built-in stock rack mounting studs near the center of the cartop) would allow the installation of a full length Yakima track over the top of the channel but I don't have an MDX to experiment with. If this was successful, Yakima towers could be placed anywhere along this extended track rather than the fixed and close spacing of the factory crossbars.
Some pictures of the open channel would be a help in determining if such an installation modification would be possible and if you could throw in some dimensions (width and depth of channel under the cover) that would help too.
I am not working for Yakima, I have 2 long ocean kayaks I want to know can be safely strapped to an MDX before I give up my old Range Rover. Thanks in advance....tomgb

We are just east of Memphis. We don't see many MDX's around here. I think I have counted 2 in the last 6 months.
tomgb:
We'll be ordering our roof rack soon and will be sure to take some pics as we're installing...
Stay tuned...

| tomg..I too am considering adding the Yakima channels to my MDX...the track is 1.5 inches wide and the roof channel is 1.0 wide so some type of gasket or bridge would have to be used. I would love any additional information that people have... |

Memphis: Thanks for the reply. Pictures will be much appreciated. I am most interested in pics and dimensions of the OPEN (uncovered) channel.
MDXinVA: I've heard of these topside dimensions before and it should mean that the track would successfully overlay the factory channel with a 1/4" lap on each side. What I am most interested in knowing is the width and depth of the channel below the channel cover. If I can sucessfully install a big enough metal block in the channel, then it can be drilled and tapped to accept bolts from the Yakima track placed above it.
The thought here is to install mounting blocks, re-install the channel covers (with access holes at the new mounting blocks and the factory stud locations) and then just overlay all with the track and snug it down using the 1/4" overlap for additional rigidity. The track would be bolted at the extremities with new mounts and the center with factory roof rack mounts (hidden under channel) giving 4 roof connections per track. It might require some gasket work to heep water out of the channel at the bolt holes. I would hope this would be good enough to work. There's also the matter of how much the Yakima track can be bowed to fit the curve of the MDX roof. The longer the track run, the more curve involved. |
