2003 MDX Touring stock
I did one of my usual work trips which was 455 miles with the speedo hitting 67-68-69 MPH the whole way. About 20 of those were officially city driving miles.
Gallons used: 21.44
MPG: 21.22 (trip computer said 21.4)
Conditions: Windy... 30 MPH wet roads raining 1/4th the time.
This is much worse then I though I would get.
My TLs averages 31 MPG on these trips but gets 16 in the city. |

| Try it in an underpowered Pathfinder with a 2" lift, 31" off-road tires, and luggage and you will only get 14-15 mpg!!! One of the reasons I'm going to order an MDX!!! |

| You didn't say if you had a headwind or tailwind or sidewind. A 30 mph headwind, or mostly head on, will take off several mpg. Even a sidewind will cut mileage significantly, I've found. I believe that even driving on wet roads cuts mpg a little bit. Your gas is being turned into energy to throw water into the air behind your tires. (That energy has to come from somewhere). Without the wind and rain, I would have expected about 24 on that trip, at best. |

Why do you think it is much worse than you thought, when you are only 1.56 miles per gallon away from the official Acura higway rating of 23 mpg? |

Sounds pretty normal to me.
Take away the 20 or so miles driven in the city and you are probably up to 22 MPG. Take away the wind and rainy condition and you are up to 23-25 MPG. |

| I have 1500 miles on my '03..........I have found a significant increase in fuel economy upon using the cruise control....did you 467 miles include mostly CC or foot? |

| I reset the trip computer every time I fill up. On a trip from Raleigh, NC to Silver Spring, MD, mostly on Interstates at 70-77mph, but with some town driving, the trip computer will get as high as 23.6. It drops to slightly below 23 as we mess around with the idiotic traffic on I-495. I regularly compare the computer reading to actual, and the computer reads about 1 mpg high. On my 22-mile trip to work, mostly in town but some highway driving, I'll average around 16 mpg over a week's worth of driving. I use 93 octane, use cruise control whenever I can, and NEVER turn off the A/C (I like the air-drying effect in cooler weather). |

Sounds wonderful to me! In my 5" lifted, 34"tire Durango, I get upset on a highway trip if I only get 11.1 as opposed to the usual 11.3. Guess it's all in the perspective :2:
Can't wait to get the "X" on order! |

Hi Y2kS2k:
___I don’t know how many miles are on your 03 X but break in could still be a factor in your MPG figures given the vehicle has only been available for a bit over 2 months now? I would say do the test at 10K and than you will know ~ where you are at although 21.5 + with an almost new vehicle and in less than optimum conditions sounds about right? I hope you will finally see that 23 MPG + as there are those that have received 25+ if I remember the various posts on the subject but there are many that get 20 - 21 max as well no matter the type of driving conditions and the individuals driving habits.

Few more stats I forgot to put in:
MDX had 190 miles on it (600 now)
And cruise was on the whole time |

Wanna feel better:
Our '03 4Runner Limited V8 4WD, 160 mile freeway trip with perhaps 10 in-town miles. 75 MPH cruise setting on Interstates:
17.4 mpg of Mobil's finest 93 octane premium.

that's pretty good mileage considering the MDX is brand new,and weather conditions.
Its all relative. U CANNOT compare a 4500 big/wide box(MDX) to a 3400lb aerodynamic sedan(TL). Look at the 4- runner, Durango, and Pathfinder, and ML's and u will see that your MDX is doing pretty good.
Frostyra: I thougt we calculated out that the trip computer is off by 0.5mpg. I will see if i can find the old thread. |

I think that's great mileage for a car that isn't even broken in yet. My 2 wheel drive RX300 that I just traded in on the X used to average about 22.5 on straight highway with the cruise on at about 70. Considering the X has so much more room, horsepower, is all wheel drive, and weighs something like 600 pounds more - I am very impressed. |

2" lift for the newer style Pathfinders is all I could get. Anyway, for the trails I use in VA and MD, it is sufficient. Your Durango sounds great. Any pics? (I assume you really use it off-road, right??!!)
Just ordered the MBP MDX Tour/Nav on Saturday. Expect delivery in March. I do want to keep my Pathy for my offroading. :4: |

21-23 MPG? I'm still waiting to see 19... On my recent trip: 307 ml (250 - freeway) - 16.356 gal - 18.7 MPG!!!
I have 2100 ml on my 2003. |

| Older discussions, particularly those involving the '01, indicated that mileage does not reach its best until at least 5000 miles are on the car. |

Well, so as not to take up valuable "X" bandwidth...... here's a link:
Click here to visit the album.
No radical pics in this group, but you get the idea.
Yes, she's seen quite a few offroad miles. :4:
Unfortunately, she's also spent quite a bit of time ON the road getting to offroad adventures. Odo just turned over 125,000 :(
I think the "X" will be quite the stablemate for the "D". Maybe teach the old girl some refinement and class? Naaah.... a work horse she'll stay :D |

Just got back from a ski trip and discovered a couple things about getting better gas mileage.
When you don't use cruise control and step on the gas to keep your speed, the MDX will downshift. I figure this is because the car doesn't know if you are about to take off and pass or just maintain speed. So you lose gas mileage from this.
When I put it on cruise control, the MDX doesn't downshift to maintain speed (unless I'm going up a hill) and keeps a higher MPG rating.
So you need to let the cruise computer take over for optimal gear shifting for mileage. Too bad there isn't an economy mode button that allows us to stay in the higher gear longer for manual driving.
Now if I only didn't flip my MDX on a patch of black ice on the way back , I'll post more about that in a separate thread. |

I'm going to wait for the insurance adjuster before I post any pics. That unibody design did the trick though. The roof held up pretty well and I landed on my wheels in the ditch that flipped me. I was able to restart the engine and drive out of the ditch, so I drove a totalled MDX another 75 miles home. Got some looks
I must say this car is awesome for safety, so I'm hoping that they will call it totalled and then I'll get a 2003 MDX. The roof is crushed in a bit on the front left and rear right. I was the only passenger, and the seat belt held me in fine for the roller coaster ride. All the rest of my stuff in the car went flying all over the place though, so I did get smacked with some of that stuff.
I might post pics this weekend in the Gallery. |

| Oh yeah, my gas mileage was 22.4 mpg for this last tank, including flip and going over Mt. Hood. I only have 3000 miles on my MDX. Managed to get about 370 miles on that last tank. |

| with 90% highway at 60-70mph and the rest city stop/go and slower speeds, I get about 24-25 mpg with a high of about 27.2 on a couple of tankfulls... |

Hi S2kTaxi:
___There are those that own the outlier X’s on the bottom of the MPG scale at 15 – 19 Hwy … And than there are those that own X’s on the high side w/ 23 - 26. You fortunately own an X on the positive side of that bell curve!
___My fingers are crossed as to which one I will receive ;)

I think this is a misconception that the mileage depends on the luck of draw... Here are a few tips...
1) If you have the climate control set on full auto or with the AC on you WILL decrease your gas mileage by up to 10-15%
2) Everytime you accelerate, the rear wheels are driven - the increased friction and load from that decreases your gas mileage, so try to get to a speed and stay there (cruise control helps as others have pointed out)
3) drafting large vehicles helps... (I've achieved 28+ mpg on long trips while drafting but have not included in my summary above)
4) Everytime the car is coasting (foot off the accelerator and Cruise Control off) above 1100 rpm (or thereabouts), the fuel injectors shut off - free mileage!
5) I keep my tire pressures at about 32-34 psi for better response and gas mileage (probably 1mpg).

Wayne has a legitimate point here IMHO.
My MDX gets better mileage than many posters here. At least on the freeways/highways it does. Get anywhere from 23 to 26 MPG depending on the conditions. In town I only get 15-16.
Most vehicles I have owned I have gotten better than others MPG because of my driving habits but I have owned a few that MPG was less than anticipated.
My GMC P/U was supposed to get 17 MPG on the highways, I have never been over 16 MPH and usually get only 15. The same with a Ford Bronco II I owned in the 80's. Was always 2 MPG under expected, at least I was until I brought it in for a recall. On that recall they changed something (jet?) in the carburetor because of excessive emissions performance. After that change MPG did improve 2-3 MPG. |

I must be doing something wrong....I have only 700 miles on my '03 and I only get 13.9 in the city and a whopping 15.9 on the highway.....hmmmm.
I hope after the 5000 mark it gets better. |

|
| s2ktaxi |
Please read and follow the tips I mentioned earlier... Also, after about 5000 miles, your mileage should improve... Remember that everytime your car is sitting idle, you are using about twice as much fuel as a Civic...
