You fellow X's. What was the very first vehicle you purchased. I mean purchased, not leased or recieved as a gift from Mommy and Daddy like in that sickening Lexus comercial where they hand the keys to a brand new Lexus to a teenager.

My first was a Citation 2dr sedan.
Desant
85 Plymouth Horizon. Bought in 93. $500 cash. My first paycheck in USA for 3 weeks of work. I thought it was a beast - lots of power!

I was surprised that you have to hold the blinker to make a turn - it wouldn't hold itself. Hey, but it had a stereo, so I would listen to Dire Straits and drive around in Altadena at night with windows open...

Had a little problem. Engine was overheating all the time, so it was vaporizing the water from radiator. So, I had to carry a couple gallons of water in the trunk. Good thing it was winter - I had to stop only every 40 min, wait till it cools down and fill it up with water.

Lasted about 7 days or so. Head cover gasket blew - I saw the blue smoke coming from the exhaust! :)

I liked that car a lot though. Too bad it had to go... :) And, it was back to the bus...

A 1947 Chevrolet Stylemaster that I bought from my best friend's dad for $65. It was a two-door sedan, Scout Brown on top and Sport Beige below.

The car had languished, undriven, in a garage for years and had four flat tires, a tank of fuel that smelled like paint remover, leaky lever-action shocks that were completely devoid of fluid and a stuck exhaust valve that promptly burned when we got it running.

It turned out to have a ravenous appetite, guzzling a quart of the heaviest-weight cheap oil every 200 miles, and swilling the $.329/gal Super Par gas that was its regular diet at the rate of 13 mpg. It had a sterling virtue that transcended all of its faults, however: It was rust-free, remarkable in Michigan for an elderly car. I drove it six years and it taught me how to be a reasonably accomplished mechanic.

I earned my undergrad degree and dated my wife-to-be driving the Chevy, and she and I both shed a tear when it came time to leave it .

P.S.: Tried including a picture - couldn't find instructions or figure out how to.

Hi All:

___The first car … a brand new 1983 Gray - Chevrolet Chevette - 2 Dr. Hatchback w/out a single option. I had exactly 0 problems in its 60K miles of ownership! The attached pic is a similar looking vehicle I found on a Chevette enthusiasts web site. What handling, what performance, what … Well, it did get above 30 mpg anyway ;) I should tell you about a trip across Iowa one night when it was 10 below. Oh boy was it cold inside that car!

___Enjoy

Glad I'm not the only one who hates that commercial.. :16:

Brand new 96 Nissan Sentra GXE during my second year of grad school. A decent ride, but there were a few unexplained instances where the dash board lights would completely black out for a few minutes. Nissan never figured out what was going on. I ditched it six months after graduation for an Integra. Been devoted to Acura ever since! :2:

Brand new 90 Toyota Celica GT. Worked many nights at Subways ($4.25/hr) while in highschool and had enough money for a down payment by the time I left for UCLA and paid her off by the time I graduated. Thing is.....I'm still driving her and can't bear leaving her. Never had any problems and to date she has 195,824 miles with original transmission and engine and still running strong, though she's lost some HP along the way.

1982 Toyota Celica (new), no air, pleather seats but great stereo. All my life savings and a very small inheritance from granddaddy. I think his portion may have covered the insurance for that year. Since I was a senior in HS I was a big hit for a while. Unfortunately, 3 months later accident to front end ($2,500 damage). Boy did I cry!!!

1979 AMC Spirit, it was blue with blue interior. I bought it from my brother-in-law. My first car that I bought from an actual dealership was a 1985 Honda Accord hatchback.

1980 Chevy Monte Carlo. That car did more vertical miles than horizontal. In the 2 years I owned it I paid more in repairs than I did for the car. Replaced with a 1988 CRX Si (Barbados Yellow) that I drove for 9 years. Best damn car I ever owned (The CRX that is).

I had a high-dollar stereo in it. Then someone broke into it in my driveway. (Well, my father's driveway:rolleyes: ) They stole the stereo. The insurance company gave me $2800 for it.
So, I put the money into the engine, suspension, transmission, exhaust, wheels, etc.
The car was so light, it was easy to make it FAST.
(Just what a 17 year old needs, huh?) It ate Corvettes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.:2:

I did, however, own a couple of high-performance (street) motorcycles before I bought my first car. (When I was 16 I bought my first one....a 750 Honda supersport. I used to race it for the local shop.....) Paid for it by bussing tables at a restaurant while I was in high school!!!
2002 Acura MDX!
My first car was a 1998 Volvo S70 and I still own it. I tell ya man, that thing has a lot of problems and the car is only 170hp (totally no power on highway, even a 01 Civic could go faster then the S70)!!!!! I bought it for 48000 (canadian $, price include everything e.g tax, ac fee etc, etc....). Not sure how much it will worth now

A Model T a neighbour gave me, and yes, I'm old. I sold it later for $15. Next a 32 Ford and over 50 cars later I'm thinking of buying an MDX. Regards.

I got my drivers license in 1958.

My first car that actually worked was a 1939 Ford Coach (wish I still had it) I was 18 years old. Cost $50.00. Insurance in those days was $50.00 for liability only.

A coach was a two door sedan.

Second Car 1940 Ford Coupe

Third car 1948 Pontiac.

Fourth car 1948 Ford Coach. Sold it for $100.00 and joined the Navy in 1961.

The first car my wife and I had was a two door 1948 chevvy in 1964.

Next 1964 Ford custom in 1966. Cost me $1600

I could fix all those cars myself.

Since then I haven't owed a car (except for my wifes). I have always had a company leased car every two years with all expenses paid (taxable)

Now it's back to reality with all the associated expenses. Inflation is a killer, my insurance for business use is now $1,600.00 for my X

Time to feel sorry for me now as I am out of commission and retiring to a fixed income.

1972 My Uncle Ed brought it over 2 months before my 16th birthday.
My dad kicked the front drivers side quarter panel and it fell of from rust. My mom was very pissed at my uncle and the first time I drove it that afternoon I ran over our garbage can in the alley. 2 months later and a 2 gallon bucket of bondo and it looked like new thanks to my dad teaching me how. It was beige and lasted two years before the engine died and my uncle Ed resold it for 100 bucks for the body.
Hi Ho those were the days.

I still think of it fondly today:

1991 Nissan NX-2000

Got this little pocket rocket up to 130. It could fit a ton of stuff in it, got to 60 in under 7 seconds, and kept it for 125,000 miles with no problems. . . . all for $11,000 (got it in '92 with 8000 miles).

Thinking of the fun I had in it is what's making me want my next car (to replace the Maxima) a QUICK 4-seater like the Mazda RX-8 or G35 Coupe.

First car ( bought in 1967 for $400) was a 1961 Chevy Bel-air 4 door with a 230 CI six & one barrel carb. That car ran great - just had no power & sucked gas!

A red 1957 Chevy was the 1st car I purchased. My 2nd car which I bought one year later was a 1955 Chevy which still sits in my garage.

I don't remember the year of the car, maybe late '50's to early '60s. I bought it in '67. Man what a weird car, with a 4 speed on the column. Paid $375. cash and much more in repairs before it was all over. I think this wins for goofiest car owned by a teenager. Only redeeming quality was a huge back seat. Wish I could remember what happened to it. Now that the Mini has been revived can the Minx be far behind?

Hillman Husky: FIRST SUV.

That is one of the original SUVs. What are odds ( and I mean odd_) of 2 X owners being former Hillman owners. I did need a specific key to start the car, any key on the key ring would work. My Minx was underpowered too, no torque, and when I said it was 4 speed on the column I meant 4 forward speeds and of course reverse so it was a 5 speed on the column.

1941 Chevy Coupe. Bought it 1962 for $25 because it would not run. I was 15 years old at the time.

A mechanic at the gas station where I bought it said it needed a timing gear. The original owner took it in to the mechanic and wanted a tune up cause it was missing. The mechanic changed plugs and points then it would not start. He thought the timing gears had stripped because it backfired when it was turned over.

The real problem was that he had reversed two plug wires after installing the new plugs. 1-5-3-6-2-4. Still remember the firing order of the old in line 6 cylinders. After I corrected the wire problem I had to change a head gasket. That was what was wrong with it in the first place. Cost me another $12 for a gasket set and about 2 hours of time to fix it.

Mine was a '66 Mustang Coupe purchased in 1981. 6 cylinder, 3 speed A4 automatic, and an AM radio. I made six 1,600 mile round trips in two years back and forth to college. Sold it for $1,000 more than I paid for it, and bought an '81 Accord LX Hatchback. Since then, a few Toyotas, and one other Honda Accord ('84 Hatchback - POS compared to my '81) Now the X is the latest addition. Love it so far! :)

1999 Daewoo Nubira CDX sedan (new). It was my first car and gave me no problems for the first 45k miles of ownership. Then I started to have some overheating issues - the temperature gauge would just go up almost all the way to HOT but wouldn't stop the car. I brought the car in for service and they said I need a whole bunch of things which would cost me $2500. I bought the car for about $10,000 (after Daewoo extended me their 30% discount for college reps), so I found it pointless to spend 25% of the car on repairs.

I loved that car though - served me really well. I had no trouble driving it from New York to Chicago many times over. I wish I had kept it, even with the problems it was developing. I guess it's common to have that love with your first car, no matter how bad some people think it to be.

Totally Cool. My first car was a 1971 Dodge Dart "Swinger" (two door), Slant 6, Auto, Blue with Black Vinyl interior and Vinyl top. Purchased in 1986 with 190,000mi for $200. Sold year and a half later with 200K for $300. In a year and a half I replaced, Starter motor, battery and 2 tires.
Car had; bad ball-joints, no radio, abused interior, bad exterior, no trunk lining to speak of.
The one good thing was the "indestructible Slant 6" motor, never a day of trouble and enough room under the hood for 3 mechanics to work on it at the same time.

Other than that: In order of purchase,
