We just ordered an 03 MDX with out the DVD. We worried we would NEVER talk to our kids. Has anyone found this to be true? We would like to have a DVD for long (cross country) road trips. I think we will look for a portable DVD/VHS. Anyone crossed this bridge yet?

We're getting a Sage Brush Pearl.

I'm hoping that the dvd res will keep the kid quiet on long trips!:2:

We are going the portable route. This way we can take the DVD player to the Grandparents, use in the motel room on vacation, etc. We are going with the Panasonic LA-95 9". It's not the least expensive, but it has a fantastic picture, and it plays DVD-Audio. Even my expensive progressive scan player at home won't play DVD-Audio. BTW, it's on sale at http://www.crutchfield.com for $899.99 ($100.00 off).

I guess it depends on how old the kids are. I have a preschooler and a baby and don't see the need for it right now. Currently we don't take any long (6+ hours) road trips. When I trade my '02 X in about 5 years I will seriously consider the RES. Portable units seem to make a lot of sense.

We have the RES. Our two-year old daughter *always* asks to watch Barney. We've made it a rule to not have the RES on for short trips, only long trips (> 20-30 minutes). She always asks for it though so it's a bit of a struggle.

Also, we got some sing-along videos. At least gets some parent-child interaction going.

The RES is an *instant* tranquilizer. She goes completely quiet when watching it.

The integrated RES in the dash is fantastic. You can send CD music to the back (with headphones) and listen to FM in front, all controlled from the dash. The back isn't just for DVD. That's one of the main reasons we went with the RES instead of an aftermarket system. Other aftermarket systems don't have that flexiblity AFAIK.

... discussed this in more detail.

I recommend a portable DVD player that be taken into the hotel room at night.

I consider 20 minutes a SHORT trip and am amazed that so many people feel the need to "tranquilize" their kids for such a short period of time - there is no way kids today will ever learn to sit still if they have to be entertained every waking minute of the day:rolleyes:

I do not mean to sound offensive, but I just do not get it. My three boys did just fine on 8+ hour trips with books, Game Boys, cards, etc. 20 minutes a long trip? No, long trips must be hours in my opinion!
