My fellow X owners. I so enjoyed reading about your first cars that I wanted to follow up with the worst car you purchased. Again this is one you purchased and did not recieve as a gift. To me it just hurts more when your worst is purschased with your own money.

Now mauigrl721, you can't enter this one, seeing how your first is your "2003 Midnight Blue Pearl Touring with Navigation System" Let me write.. congratulations. You should be very proud of your achievment, heck you'll be able to tell your grandkids one day ..."Why my first car didn't even fly!, It was one of those there MDX'rs. Rode real nice though."

My worst was of course a used car. Surprisingly of all things a '94 Nissan Sentra. It fell apart not one week after I purchased it. I wish I could have put it out of it's misery sooner. Donated it to some charity. I'm now banned from ever donating to that chartiy for life.

(These threads are in trilogy format so part three will be "Your favorite was what?" Coming soon to a thread near you.

Buhmabee, good thread!!! Here is mine.

I bought a 1990 VW Passat for my wife. 99K miles for $6,700. Great looking and driving car.

Worked fine for a month or so.

Then "Check Engine" light came up. Dealer fixed it - I paid.
Then it started overheating. Fixed by dealer - paid by me
Then hose blew. I paid
Then "Check Engine" light came up. I paid.
... Repeat this story for about 6-7 times.

Then alternator went. I paid to get it fixed
Then head cover gasket went. I paid.
Then distributor went. I paid.
Then electrical system went. I paid.
Then power windows went. I paid.
Then axles went. I paid.
... And so on...

Then I was afraid to drive that thing.
Then I sold the car for $3,000 after owning for 6 months and spending about $6,000 on repairs.

When I bought a 1995 Ford Probe and went to the VW dealer in Riverside, CA, we all celebrated it - mechanics, cashier, sales people, managers. We all became one big family. They new more details about me than some of my close friends and visa versa. Thanks VW Passat!!! :)

My worst was a 48 Willys. It had been restored fairly nice but the engine was shot. It took 2 quarts of 50-weight oil to drive it to work and back (50 miles). The drive shaft to the rear wheels kept popping out. I would have to put it in 4WD and drive it with the front wheels. Hum…maybe I invented FWD.:D The gas tank was under the driver’s seat inside the vehicle. Interesting thing is I wouldn’t even ride in something like that now but it didn’t bother me then.

1998 Saab 900 SE Turbo

- Bought it with 55K miles. . . .

-Had 4 major services on the car within 1 year. . . safe to say, I traded it in for a 2000 bimmer.

-No problems for now (knock on wood).

But I had a '97 Saab that was a close second.

1971 Dodge Demon 340. I bought it new and within the first 6 months I had to replace the 4 speed tranny, 2 distributors (dual point - pain in A$$) and had 2 burned valves. When it ran it was fast - but it just about broke me keeping it running! I finally traded it in (with the 2 burnt valves) for a 1970 Ford Galaxy 500 coupe. I didn't like Fords, but I got a "even swap" trade & never put a penny into the Ford for 3 yrs.

'84 Accord. That thing went through three clutch cables, two fuel pumps, two sets of brake rotors (warped, even though a torque wrench was used exclusively and they were turned on the car at a Honda dealer), and a rear window (defroster shorted out). Still, I got 157,000 miles over eight years out of it. ;)

No question here, it was a '73 Ford Pinto, purchased new. It had the 1600 cc "Kent" pushrod 4 cyl engine, which was so feeble the car couldn't exceed 70 mph with any kind of a headwind.

One sat virtually on the floor when driving, with knees in the air. I don't think we ever managed to get anyone but kids in the back seat. The unassisted steering had over 5 turns lock-to-lock, but was still heavy.

The rear suspension (solid axle on leaf springs) was so primitive that the rear tires would violently hop up and down under heavy braking on smooth pavement. On a washboard country road, 20 mph was about the max, otherwise the car would just chatter sideways off the road and into the ditch.

On this purchase, my spouse picked the car and I got to choose the color. Since then, we've done it the other way around, and it's worked out much better for both of us.

82 or 83 BMW 528e. Tried to forget this car.

Air Conditioning would spit snow and freeze up but dump water on your foot on corners.

Back of front seat would keep falling off.

Power antenna motor would keep breaking.

Obscenely expensive service.

Cutout on dash for European options not on the American version.

Light switches not connected to anything in US Version.

Engine governed to 4850 RPM.

Many little problems I can't remember.

Sold in 1 year with 22K miles, like new condition (well except that it was a "you know what'") and lost $12,000 in depreciation.

For me it was no contest, my second vehicle a new 1979 Ford Mustang TRX with 6 cylinder and 4 speed overdrive manual transmission.

Where do I begin:

1) Ordered the Ghia model which provided chrome trim and being a TRX which meant black trim, one side came chrome and the other side black.
2) All windows leaked when it rained, puddles inside.
3) Bad rear end whine-had it replaced twice and Ford said to live with the whine-sounded like snows year round.
4)Bad Tranny- replaced twice-when you placed stick in first and let out clutch and pressed the accelerator the stick would pop back into neutral. Very frustrating when your first in line at the light and you do this six times and the light is back to red and no one behind you can go.
5) Four speed overdrive on a vehicle that needed more power to begin with. Way too tall between gears-revs would have to be to high on the previous gear so you didn't lug in the next gear.
6) Clutch cable broke at 30 days and had to be towed to dealer.
7) Never alligned at the factory-new TRX tires ruined at 6K miles.

On and on - this car spent 14 nights and 28 days in the shop in the first 90 days.

Ford offered to buy it back at 1/3 depreciation after 2 weeks. The dealer told me that since I bought it, it was my problem.

Kept in for 50K miles and traded it in on an Accord. The mustang at that point could only be used with the A/C on in the summer with the windows down. Totally leaked freon in the car while I drove.

FORD - "Found On Road Dead"

FORD - "Fix Or Repair Daily"

They were both held true for me. The MDX is my third Honda since and am never going back to FORD.

I had an offer at work to have it torched in the dealers garage in the day time, but I didn't take up on it. I was afraid the would do it.

I believe this was a year or two prior to the Lemon Law going into effect.

1976 Ford Mustang II

Engine would just shut off on highway possibly from temperature problem

No power whatsoever

Definitely "Found On Road Dead"

........was a 1984 Chevy Caprice Classic (remember those boats?? :D ), which was my second car (and last American made car). I bought the car used back in 1989 with barely 35,000 miles on it. Just 400 miles after I'd bought it, the transmission blew out, the alternator and water pump both gave way and there were tons of other issues I don't even recall. My first car, a 1982 Ford Escort was nearly as bad. After these experiences I swore never to buy an American brand vehicle ever again. I've now gone through over 12 cars since then (All Japanese brands) and have been very very happy :)

All time worst was an 88 Chevy Corsica I bought for my youngest son in 92..had 46K on it, within a year he gave it back to me because it was just a piece of garbage. I traded it in on a new 93 Camry, which almost 10 years later has nearly 103K and runs like a top....

I'm ashamed to admit it. . . .

1982 Chevy Citation - what a P.O.S. Bought it in 1988 with 55K miles for $1700, had it for 7 months and knew that the tranny was on the way out. Dumped it for $400.
