I've read posts that said something about a 5% rebate on gas on the Shell credit card. I filled out the application from the Shell pump and got the card. How is the rebate applied? Is it a year-end thing, does it come off at the pump, or what?
TIA

I've had one since '97 & I've earned over $600 in rebates. Here's how it works: whatever you earn in rebates on this billing cycle will automatically be creditted to your account on the next statement. I also have a BP card (3% on gas & 1% on everything else, so not quite as good as Shell's 5% back on gas) and they do it a little different - after accumulating $20 worth of rebates, they send you a $20 BP card (kind of like a gift card worth $20). I prefer Shell's method, but "free" money is free money!

A little clarification on the Shell M/C. As g_dog01 said there is a 5% rebate on Shell gasoline purchases and a 1% rebate on all other purchases. However the entire rebate is applied to your Shell gasoline purchases.
For example; you buy $100 of Shell gas for $5 rebate and spend $700 on other purchases (clothes, groceries, movies, etc.) for a $7 rebate. Your total $12 rebate will be applied to your gasoline bill. The billing statement breaks out Shell gas vs other purchases. I assume that if the rebate exceeds your gas bill, then the credit is held til next month (never had that happen).
All in all a great card and a great deal IF you regularly have access to Shell stations.

I've had the Shell Mastercard from Chase for years and have earned a lot of rebates, but in my last billing statement, there was a notice about it going away soon. I can't remember the timeframe exactly, but I believe it was early next year...

The only reason I got the card was for the rebate. If the rebate goes, so does the card.
Thanks everyone for the info!

That would be a bummer; I will check our most recent statement when I get home tonight. I did however check online and there is no mention of this on Chase's cardmember benefits page.

5% if charge the Shell card at Shell Station, which included gas and bodyshop work [if I am not mistaking]. In any other location, you earn 1% of rebate.
It will be bad if it goes away.
Exxon/Mobil mastercard also offers 3%/1% rebates. Both cards give you rebates on the next billing statement.
Or you can get the AMEX cash rebate credit card, which gives you up to 5% of rebate. I don't know how they determine how many % of rebate you are getting. But I believe they give you the rebate toward the end of year.

I've gotten my second statement on my new Shell card. Still no rebates! Looks like the rebate is history.

do you have a shell card or a shell mastercard/visa? you only get the rebate one the latter. also, my sister said something about the rebate going away in either jan. or feb. but i've already thrown away the statement inserts, so i can't check.

The Shell Rebate card offered by Chase is now gone. I received a new Cash Rebate card today from Chase and also a letter informing me that the Shell Rebate is no longer being offered. Guess I will have to cancel the card now.

There was nothing in our most recent statement, we have received no letter, and last I checked (this morning) the program was still on the Chase webpage:confused:
PS to jatharp: we have never paid an annual fee.

I never receive any letter indicated the rebate will be removed from Shell card. (Shell MasterCard From Chase)
On my last statement (December 2002), I still have FREE Gasoline Summary, which indicated how much I could get back in January.
Also I see a BIG print in the middle of statement said "A REBATE ON EVERY PURCHASE! 5% ON ALL SHELL GASOLINE PURCHASES 1% ON ALL OTHER PURCHASES."
I will receive my next station in about a week. I will see if the rebate is gone or not.
msu is corrected. I also never pay annual fee for the card.

That is very interesting. On my last statement, my Shell rebate switched to the 1% cash rebate. I called Chase and asked about the switch and what happened to my Shell rebate and the CS told me that the Shell rebate is no longer being offered. I also checked the Chase Website and do not see any mention of the Shell Card anymore.

kishino,
I don't know. But you might want to check this out Shell MasterCard.
It indicated clearly:
- Earn Unlimited Free Shell Gasoline!
- 5% rebate on Shell gasoline purchases in the U.S.
- 1% rebate on all your other purchases
- No fee for the first year. Thereafter, $20 fee waived with 9 yearly Shell station purchases

I picked up a Shell credit card application today from my local Shell dealer, and they have 2 options (Shell Credit Card- free) OR (Shell SELECT Member Card -$25:00 membership fee) and neither mentions any gasoline discounts.:3:

I got the application from the gas station few years back. I am not sure if they still have it. Normally you could apply the card from Shell website, but I think they are updating the new information/database for the Shell MasterCard from Chase. So the website indicated come back in late Jan. for the update new information.

Here comes the bad news for anyone who is looking to get the Shell MasterCard from Chase (for getting 5% rebate discount for purchase shell gasoline).
I received a letter yesterday, which indicated Shell will no longer be participating with Chase in a credit card program. Chase will provide "The Chase Freedom MasterCard" to replace the "Shell MaserCard from Chase".
The new card will still provide the rebates, but I don't know in what percentage. The information will be released on Jan. 27th. You could find out the new benefit @ The Chase Freedom MasterCard .

I have an Amex card from Costco. It gives back on a sliding scale but one that pretty quickly goes to 1.5% back. I think if you keep any balance on the card you go to 2.0% back....surely keeping a balance is counter productive for earning anything though. With tuition bills and charging virtually everything that moves and many things that can't move, we get back hundreds of dollars a year. It comes as a voucher type check once a year, redeemable at Costco, where they will let you spend the check or give you back cash! :7:

The combination of price, quality and even customer service at Costco is mind boggling. Great outfit.

When I go to the New Freedom Card page ( http://www.chasefreedombenefits.com/ ) to try and learn about the new benefits I get a message that says SORRY we could not log you on successfully call 800 ......
When you call the 800 number and sit through 5 minutes of menus to get a human they have no idea what is going on. She said that they are aware of a problem.

Anyone else hear about Shell moving over to Citibank?
I pretty much only use Shell (closest to home and work) and think the 5% offer is better off me.

I just applied for the Shell Card through Citibank. I am planning on keeping both the Freedom card and the new Shell card. I'll just use the Freedom card where I can't find a Shell, 3% is a whole lot better then 1% if choices are limited...

Just received the new Freedom Card today. It did has exactly same number as with OLD Shell MasterCard from Chase. The brief brochure did indicate earn a 6% rebates on gasoline purchases at any station now through March 31st, afterward 3% rebates. (Within 50 states) Otherwise 1% on any purchase.
