Nav Routing Logic - Click HERE for Original Thread

Too often, the NAV system is giving me a longer, less direct routing down small side roads instead of main routes. Some of the routings are just plain stupid - having me pass main roads in search of more obsure side roads, which are simply longer and slower routings.

This is driving me nuts - is the system simple dense or am I?

... for numerous discussions on Navi quirks.

On that annoys me and could be contributing to part of your problem involves street naming conventions. If a street changes names (for real and/or on the DVD Rom) then Navi has no choice but to treat the street as more than one.

For example if a long single street runs through a town and has several names then Navi may not select that route as Easy or Direct; even though it is the easiest most direct route! Many cities have a highway that runs through it. Say Hwy 14 is called Hwy 14 N on the far north side of Main St. Then as it approaches downtown it is called Martin Luther King Hwy. As the road exits the city to the south of Main it is now called Hwy 14 S (by the way this is a real example). Hence one street w/ three names - Navi does not like that.

I metioned before a situation when driving to my home while heading North on a major freeway, the NAV dircetions are more circuitous than the way I would normally go.
However, the way I go requires crossing 3 lanes of traffic in a fairly short distance to make a left turn. It's not an 'easy' manuever.
I would tend to believe the Nav is programmed to avoid similar situations, by offering an alternate route not requiring quick lane changes as a preresquisite to making a turn.
At other times, when you miss Nav prompts, and have to make a U turn, it will often say to make one if it safe to turn. When you consider all the scenarios dependent on traffic conditions, etc. it's quite an amazing system even with it's ocassional faults.

Hard to describe if you don't know my route, but I am heading east on a major state road, and would normally make a right turn and head due south on another major state road, almost directly to my house. Instead, it has me continue east for a few miles, make a right (south) on a small windy rural road about 1.5 cars wide, then head back west again on a small rural road. Longer routing by several miles, roads slower and more difficult to navigate.

Can't make any sense out of this. It's stuff like this that makes me believe the system is nice to have, but hardly worth $2k. I wouldn't get it again.

I agree at times it doesn't take you the most direct route but I have a mind set now that it is perfect for travelling to a destination "YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN" I use it sometimes for travelling to known desinations and has given me some interesting scenarios. It drives my wife nuts because she simply does not trust it. I just say to her,"if you know it is going to route you down a road and you think you know a better one, JUST TURN THE WAY YOU WANT. It will recalculate anyways to get you to the destination." The system is amazing in that aspect. Case in point, we were downtown heading home after the Falcons game Sunday. I punched in home on my nav and it proceeded to send us there. Of course downtown was crazy and the route it wanted to send us was the same that 5000 other cars were on. While we were stopped in traffic we scolled around the map looking at sidestreets to get us out of the mess. We found a sidestreet that hooked up with an on ramp to the interstate that was relatively clear. Away we went. The fact that we did not have to drag out a paper map was priceless.

The problem is not that the NAV does not work...it does sometimes!!!! After many trips successfully following "Maddy's" voice commands she began to lead me astray. Returning home on our major interstate road she suggested I continue on 4 miles past my normal turnoff....one she had had me use on many occasions.

What gives with the change in route (to a very much worse one) when the roads have not changed in more than 25 years?

.......a lot of this "Routing logic" has been tremendously improved in the new "next-generation" Navi on the '03 model, and that goes for "positional accuracy" as well. I can clearly tell the difference from the DVD system I had on my 2000 3.2TL/NAVI.

Depending on how much of the programming logic comes directly from the "software" these improvements may make their way in the DVD upgrade.

I've also heard talk of Acura making "adapter kits" to retrofit older vehicles with the new Navi system. Don't know how far it's true!

I too agree that the logic is often out of whack. Many times I ignore the logic and continue the way I want and then it re-calculates. The problem is that for about 20 minutes it will keep trying to get you to go back to the way it originally wanted (i.e. get off next exit take it to another road and get back on track of original, slower route).

The one feature which seems to work well though is the Detour feature. I was on the New Jersey Turnpike and stuck in traffic that was hardly moving. I hit the detour button and it had me get off a the next exit (i.e. A) and then return on to the parkway at the following exit (i.e. B) so that this way I'd miss a bunch of the traffic.

I hope they come out with a feature to upgrade the older Nav's to the newer ones. The logic in the old ones is sometimes lacking. The thing that kills me is that everytime I go to Mapquest the logic is perfect, don't know why Acura has so many more problems.
