As someone who just got out of the Army, I can safely claim that nobody who is in the military is going to buy a vehicle with the letters KIA (which stands for Killed In Action, for you civilians) on it!

Toper,
As an Army vet I agree. I was offended by the use of KIA from the day that vehicle was announced. |

From speaking with my Korean friends, KIA means "to move in motion"
So..seriously...reading the name too much into it...is just..silly.. |

Don't get me wrong...I don't doubt that KIA is trying to convey a positive slogan through the translation of their name. I also did not mean anything negative towards the actual cars themselves which they produce (although I've never driven one).
However, for those of us in the military, the letters "KIA" mean something to us, as well (something very deep and solemn, at that). They obviously were not aware of the dual meaning that it would have with us. But I'm sure it has crossed the minds of everyone in the military...in my 4 years at Fort Hood, Texas, I've NEVER seen anyone driving a KIA on post!
Please don't take this post the wrong way. I just wanted to try and explain it from a veterans point of view. Why don't you talk to your military friends, as well, and ask them what they think? I'm sure that they won't have to "read into the name too much" to tell you the same thing. Anyways, I think civilians who don't understand that are...just...silly :)
Take Care,

As a veteran, I totally understand it, but I rarely made the association as it is a imported vehicle, and it is obvious the name was chosen with a high degree of ignorance, not malice IMHO. Although, it could have been selected by an american designer for the car company. It has a very negative connatation, obviously, but we would laugh if it meant 'bad car' in another language.
Often times abbreviations or acronyms have ambigous meanings to different people. Many symbols or legends used in engineering, science, manufacturing, quality, etc. have different meanings in entirely different environments.
I guess it's how far you want to take it. Maybe write someone like John McCain or John Kerry and make them aware of it, as it likely is not a priority on their to do list, but their military experiences may make them more sensitive to the issue. |

Oh, I totally agree with you that there was no malice intended by the choice of their name. That's why it doesn't really bother me enough to the point where I would write to a politician. However, I don't think you'll ever catch me behind the wheel of one!
