Does anyone know the difference between the two, is one lighter than the other.
Also is it the same size as the stock shifter. The only one I have seen was in the test vehicle and my recollection was that it was wider than the stock with an acura emblem on it. It was an attractive light colored wood, would this be burlwood or mahogany? |

The mahogany one is stained a bit more on the reddish side, it really doesn't match the interior wood, more like a bit cheaper "gimme" made by Acura in case a salesman has to toss one in on a deal. The burl one has the nice wood pattern that you already have in the MDX, and has a dark honey color (best way I can describe it).
Hope that helps! |

| Anyone know what kind of wood the burlwood is? Usually burlwood refers to walnut burls, but the color seems a bit off on the ones I've seen. |

| U do know the wood ain't real, right? |

| I knew the paneling was 'simulated', but was under the impression that the steering wheel and shift knob were bona fide wood (haven't seen them other than in pictures). If they're not, what the heck are they charging for? I've sold entire cars for less! (OK, for good reason). |

I put one to the test here at Hondacuraworld, try it yourself if you like.
With the shift knob off of the vehicle, look down into the hole where the threads are, and you will see a phillips head screw. Take the screw out, and you will see, WOOD! Also, the chrome ring on the outside of the knob screws off counterclockwise and underneath you can see where the wood isn't perfectly smooth, where it was cut across the grain.
Just a little FYI...... |

Wow! I'm surprised! But feel better since it's a hundred bucks. How bout the steering wheel, Tim?
I guess the fact I thought it was plood is a testament to the quality of lacquer finish! :) |

| Well, steering wheels are a bit harder to take apart, but without taking a belt sander to it :D I'm guessing that it's real too, since it has the same feel. Fiberglas or plastic just doesn't feel the same. |

| OK, so back to my original question - what kind of wood is it? I'm guessing something tropical, like rosewood. Maybe someone could section theirs so we could get a good ID. |

| Strange as this is, I finally got a call back from Acura. They confirmed the woodness of the shifter knob (although they didn't know what wood), but the steering wheel....isn't! It's fiberglass. Surprised the heck out of me. |

Then why do they advertise it as wood and make such a big deal about "the feel" of the wood when it isn't?
IMHO, the fake woodgrain trim throughout the MDX is the one and only cheesy part of the whole vehicle. If they put vinyl strips of woodgrain on the sides (a la woody) I'm out of here! ;)
As an aside, my 91 BRG Miata has a REAL wood steering wheel, and Nardi wood shifter. The wood has definitely UV faded in the SOCAL sun though :( even though I almost always park with my top up.
