Curious as to how the members here access the internet. This question is primarily about your access from home.
If you care to share the speed in a reply, that would be nice too.
For instance, I use a cable modem and typically get speeds of ~1,500 kbps(down)/240 kbps(up). This is according to the speed tests at broadbandreports.com.
You can test your speed here:

my company pays for my DSL line at home so i can occassionally work at home. i'm pretty lucky to have a CO close enough that i get pretty consistent 1,200 kbps download and 80 kbps upload (doesn't matter since i don't serve anything).

| We just moved into a brand new house in a new subdivision and they are just finishing laying the cables for AT&T. Go figure we have phoneline into the subdivision but it will not support DSL. Can't wait for broadband speeds again. P.S. Bellsouth Sucks!!!!!! Oh and I won't be surprised if I am the only one under 55k. Currently connected at 52K.ARGGGGGGGHHHHH |

I suffered with dial-up for about three years while AT&T delayed and delayed and delayed getting into our suburb. It took a fixed wireless company to start offering an alternative broadband solution to get AT&T to 'step up' their efforts and finally get it done. It's amazing what a little competition will do! My theory is that until we had another alternative in our town, AT&T would just keep ignoring us and 'hooking up' higher priority towns/neighborhoods.
But now... I love my cable modem connection! :D I'm not sure I could go back to dial-up.

Technically, no one actually gets 56K from a 56K modem... 52K is actually pretty good :) (for dial-up). |

I lived with dial up, and once I decided to make the jump to cable, I could never go back. What a difference.

T3 at the office
DSL at home w/ housewide Ethernet (16ports) and 802.11b
Cable at apartment w/ Ethernet (8ports) and 802.11b
One the move... My notebook and pocket pc both have 802.11, but I also use my Ericsson phone with infrared and blue tooth to connect my deviced through t-mobile.
Plus, my city has 802.11 access everywhere, both at home and most areas. It does not really work that well, but it's there.
In all honesty, I am somewhat of a techno-geek, running a number of things at home including a Win2k domain controller (dns, dhcp, dfs, and active directory), Win2k web server (iis, mts, mx mail & ftp), Win2k application server (cybergenie phone system, audiotron server, print server, etc.), WinXP MediaServer (this one uses a Sony 57" wide HDTV and wireless keyboard, records tv shows, and games for the kids/sitters), and several other devices including 4 WinXP workstations, 2 WinXP notebooks, PocketPC, and a Turtle Beach AudioTron on my housewide audio.
The coolest thing I have bought lately (at least until my MDX tour/nav/res comes in two weeks) is a 128M Creative MuVo... I really recommend these little things.
The first step is admitting you have a problem!!!
If you know anyone who is worse than I am, please let me know!
Sorry to digress off topic,

Where do you test it? I go to www.Broadbandreports.com
under 'Tools'. Very informative site.
Have consistently run ~ 1100/135
with SBC DSL.
Problem with applet is usually related to java. Have you tried a different browser to run the test? |

You're not alone :7: I'm running 38.6 right now out here in the Maryland boonies. Only other option for us is satellite and I'm too cheap to pay the $$$ for a faster connection. Netzero is more my speed (but do have a T1 line at work). |

Geese do I love cable, I don't have the best company, ADELPHIA:3: , They can be the biggest A$$ Holes. But the speed is awesome, got a little less than 3000 for download but Adelphia limits the upload so I only got around 80. But the upload doesn't really affect me right?
Oh ya almost forgot, a good place also to check speed is www.Toast.net |

SBC DSL 1172/128 speed.
I had Cable until AT&T's supplier went bankrupt last year & I had no internet for 3 days! DSL became available the 3rd day of no cable & I switched!! Been very happy with no flucuation in speed. I am not getting the promised 1500 down speeds, but I am very happy with the 1172.......given I could only get 26k from dialup prior to cable (then DSL). |

You're not the only one with 56k dial-up at home! But at work, it's
fiber-optic and the speed is awesome.:21: :21: |

A far-reaching proposal from the FBI, made public Friday, would require all broadband Internet providers, including cable modem and DSL companies, to rewire their networks to support easy wiretapping by police. |

My DSL is just under 1200/136 kps. I'm happy. Has been a very reliable connection except during a recent backbone outage in socal.
I typically use the speed tests, etc. at broadbandreports.com
Great site for info on providers and a multitude of tests. |

We use Verizon's 1xRTT cellular network. We live in our motor coach 1/2 the year and home in Minnesota the other 1/2. This system provides us with respectable speed. On the road this service is available 90% of the time. We average about 100 kbs on the download side and 50 kbs on the upload side. We use the unlimitied plan which is $80 per month.
We can't get a DSL line and our cable company is the pit's. Our dialup service was running 24 kbs, sometimes even lower.
Got to try some of the other test sites, I use pcpitstop.com |

Ditto here, with SBC (Sucks Beyond Compare)
Used to have Cable modem but got to be too costly without CATV (I'm on the Dish) On DSL now, and may go back to cable modem in September when my year contract is up. Of course its only half the cable cost at $24.95/mo. |

Just went from dialup to DSL broadband at 1.5 meg which has added a whole new aspect to the web for me.
Access speeds appear to be changing fast as our options as to the type of service.
What speed and type of service do you have? |

| Same here. Switched from Dial-up to DSL (1.5 M) this year as it became available in our area. A pleasure to be on-line now vs. having to "wait" for the dial-up (lack of speed). |

| I like cable for the speed and apparent reliability. If I did not have Dish it would also be more cost-effective. If I knew I could get a DSL connection that was as reliable, I would be willing to ramp down speed in trade for half the monthly cost. But they always want a contract, cable is month to month. I don't like being held hostage to a telco. |

| I'm using cablemodem. I just tried broadbandreports.com test (LA test server, 400 miles or so from here and even longer/further by wire). Got 1164/340. Everyone must have broadband to be compatible with the pics from Excalibur, Xfactor and others:):):) |

Heh, how about 10Mbps downd and 10Mbps up? If you are in Illinois, check out DLS Internet Wireless service @ www.dls.net
Of course you will not get 10Mbps all the time, but even if you get half of it it smokes cable easily. For $65 per month with no contract. (Well, ok - I admit, these guys are my partners, so I advertise them). But they are REALLY good, really... :2: |
