Hi all. It's been awhile, but we are all moved into our new house and this new Garage definitely needs some TLC and organizing.

It's the new year and time to get that garage in shape. Anyone got a nicely organized Garge? Looking for some tips to make room and organize that space. If anyone has any pictures of good storage solutions or custom cabinets that would be great too. Looking for any and all ideas to clean up our act in the new garage. Anybody hire one of those professional Cabinet/organizer companies? If so, which one? I'd like to incorporate a workbench into the plan as well. Thanks!

May be a bit pricey, but will give you food for thought if you want to use as a plan and then buy and assemble the materials on your own: http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog...3000&L2=L2_3010

The "seal your garage floor" companies in my area have branched out into the Garage Storage & Organization business.

The stuff from Griot's is nice, but just not well suited to a regular home garage in a climate that salt is used...

Most of the organization companies rely on 'weatherized MDF' cabinets which are OK, but with harsh climates they do not stay nice for long, worse they do not "play nice" with shins, pets, bikes or car bumpers.

Though I generally hate plastic cabinets, there is ONE company that is selling a well thought-out system that uses plastic cabinets that are reinforced in key areas.

They also incorporate a "continuous channel" wallboard that allows for great flexibility in placement.

I got an estimate for my very small two-car with storage area garage. Basically about as much as new low/mid-end cabinets for the kitchen, around $12,000. That was for "the works". I already have a TON of crap in my garage so I had 'em measure all the existing shelves, hooks, brackets et cetera. Basically I have two mountain bikes, two road bikes, car ramps, floor jack, drag slicks, garbage cans, recycling bins, extra opener(long story), extension cords, sand, salt, soil, gravel, garden tools, snow thro, 50 lbs dog food, two Lab-sized wire dog crates, 20 inch deep shelves, 12 inch deep shelves and a whole bunch more stuff I can't get to!
Renov8tress thought we should "do all or nothing" and unfortunately nothing won... I still have the quote/design and long for the day we decide to get the stuff. Means that, for now, second car has to get backed in so that driver can exit through the proper door. Maybe if I win the lottery...

I installed some utility cabinets from Home depot in my garage. My wife didn't want to see a lot of junk on shelves.

The only drawback is you have to assemble and install the cabinets.

I also purchased a storage shed, that made a lot of difference cleaning up the garage.

Congrats on you new home.

Well, the simple answer is no. We were suppose to work on it over the holidays but with 2/3rds of our family quite sick it didn't happen.

As for the storage, if you are willing to do it yourself to a limited degree, Home Depot has a nice variety of cabinets that are very easy to put together and install or mount in a garage. We did most of our garage this way and the storage has been wonderful. Pricing was also pretty good if I remember correctly.

I did the HomeDepot cabinets, too. I think they were "Mills Pride" brand. Look good and holding up well. Did half the garage; cost ~$600 for all the cabinets, as I recall. I'd do it again when we move. Assembly required :D

Park in our garage? Ha!:p You could barely WALK in our garage until a month or so ago. (Too many sports cars in rehab transition.)

Hubby bought 4 or 5 of those industrial strength Gorilla racks (yep - Costco!) and improved the situation immeasurably. Boy are they a bear to assemble though. You need a sledghammer and a fluent 4-letter-word vocabulary! :3:

Sell current house and purchase with a basement. I have no idea where the heck people put stuff when they do not have a basement. Also great for practicing slapshot and skating.

Don't feel bad. I just came from the "Valet Closets" showroom and HOLY COWABUNGA! For them to do my Garage would price out at just about $6000.00. I'm in shock.

To put this in perspective... A 4 foot by 8 foot high cabinet costs just about $700.00 installed. A very similar white melamine cabinet from Home Depot in a DIY kit? Just about $99.00. Granted, the quality might be a tad better with the more expensive one, but come on... A seven HUNDRED percent markup? White Melamine is still pretty much white melamine as far as I'm concerned. I could spend ten extra bucks per cabinet and get some classier pulls and hinges and some additional bracing and have essentially the same thing. I can't see spending that kind of dough when you can do it yourself. As an example, the unit below would run you approximately $4000.00... Yikes. Nice stuff but I think I'll do it myself... I'm sure I could replicate that for a fraction of the cost.

Price: $4000.00

Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year - been a while since I've had time to catch up with you guys.

Regarding garage organizers, I won't provide pics b/c our garage is a mess despite the organizational components (you actually have to put things back in their place for that stuff to work... ), but I can describe what we've done. Take a look at the pic above. Imagine that the two side tall cabinets are a bit wider, and top to bottom just two side-by-side doors (no drawers). The inside of those are shelves - we've used plastic bins and such for additional organization inside. The middle workbench portion is also just two doors with shelves inside. Above the workbench we put pegboard the length of the workbench, and the height of the two tall cabinets on either side. We connected the two tall cabinets with a plywood shelf at the level of the tops of the cabinets, supported front and back by 2x4s. The cabinets all came from Orchard Supply (they seemed sturdier than what Home Depot had at the time), and I think cost a total of ~$300. It's all white melamine (3/4" thick), with grey plastic pulls (which is nice when you have dirty/greasy hands). We painted the plywood and 2x4s white to match. It looks really good, actually, and it's quite functional.

We also custom built some shelving on the side walls near the garage door. We have one of those rolling doors with the L-shaped steel tracks on either side. Along the top of each steel track (but level, of course) we ran long melamine shelves, supported in part by the garage tracks, and in part by metallic braces that go up through the ceiling and screw into the ceiling joists. Those shelves are great for skis, snowboards, and boxes/stuff we don't often use. On one side, we also built some other shelves under that top one, for recycling bins, Christmas tree stuff, etc. On two sides they're supported by 2x4s that are screwed into the walls. On the third side they're supported by a 2x2 that's been anchored into the floor at the bottom, and into the long top shelf at the top. It's extremely sturdy, and only took an afternoon, a circular saw, a jig saw, a power drill with masonry capability, and some sheets of melamine from Home Depot (plus some hardware). It was relatively inexpensive, highly functional (well, when we put things back in their place, anyway), and pretty easy to do.

My advice... unless money is no object, spending 4 or more thousand $ on garage cabinets isn't worth it - you can do something really functional and good looking for under $1k in a weekend by yourself with units from your favorite hardware store. Save the custom job for where it matters - like in your kitchen.

Hope this helps,
Ioana.

PS - our X was born on the 20th - we're expecting it at the dealer a week from Sunday. :2: :2: :2:
