I noticed a rattle/clunk sound coming from the left front.
At first, I thought it the dreaded "thud". But it progressed. It was also a higher frequency sound than a "thud" would be.
Brought it in for checks. Printed off a bunch of stuff from here and Edmunds.
They retorqued stuff to no avail. Then they replaced the upper strut bearing ("damper" not strut in Acura speak)-
All Gone. The service advisor claimed that the retorquing didn't clear it up, but with this kind of problem (noise) how can you assign percentages?
I had a different rattle, tinnier, from the moon roof. The oft-reported fix of the motor mount tabs needing adjusting didn't work. The replaced the left rail assembly. This was the second visit for this problem, the last time they replaced the center seat belt trim (?) and I was not clear what other things they did.
(Have you noticed that only parts getting replaced are discussed in the "official" service records? Tweaks, retorquing, etc are often not mentioned.)
Got the harness recall done while I was in.
Very nice work, after two other dealer/horror stories (old posters from Edmunds may recall)- Niello in Sacramento- Good, high quality operations.
Tahoe Tomorrow-

PS. Anybody has work done on the front end, like disassembly, major retorque, new parts: the Service Manual MAY require that the 4 wheel alignment be rechecked. Ask your advisor to look at the book- mine were surprised. |

Ard,
I am having trouble determining if your sound (from the front left) is cleared up or not. Your problem sounds much like mine (I've had my MDX for just over a week).
Is your sound completely gone now??
Thanks,
Rod

Yes. All gone.
As I mentioned, it was the upper strut bearing ("damper") in MDX-speak.
Of course, since I didn't do it, who knows what the dealer really did- They did retorque stuff and claimed that wasn't it, and I did have the regional service manager involved- so I am slightly more inclined to believe what they said.
PM me if your in N. Ca and want to talk to the regional guy..
Last time i went in I had printouts of all the problems, plus the service manual. They were a little surprised at the detail.
Also, as I mentioned, they 'forgot' to do the alignment- I wonder if they even check torque values half the time
Good luck

You hit the nail right on the head. It isn't so much as a thud. I hear it too coming from the front left side. I just assumed it was the tires hitting the bumps. I'll say something to them when I go pick up my seat and see what they say. No I'll do better, I'll print this out and take it to them and see what they say.

I think I have the thud, or maybe it's all in my head. But sometimes when I go over medium-sized bumps or drop type creases I hear this hollow clunk.Somewhat like stiking an empty plastic cylinder. It happens only on the front driver's side. It feels as if the suspension has some play in it. It happened the first time I drove the car but I assumed that that was normal suspension noise from an SUV since I had never driven one before. But reading these posts really has me thinking.
My old VW Jetta made a louder version of the same noise after the front suspension was replace by the street corner mechanic. |

Having been born and raised in NYC, I don't think there's a car made that DOESN'T get a thud in the suspension within the first year....
I feel sorry for new cars in the city,

Ard,
Sounds like I have the same affliction since it is in the driver's front. More like a clunk than a thud plus get creaking when I brake hard and truck rebounds. I have 3K miles on mine and I am guessing you have a lot more.
P.S. lmeans, when you take it in to Joe Rizza, I'll be very interested in what they say and if they fix it. If they do, I might reconsider taking it to them versus McGrath. |

Rem,
14,800 now, but when I started with trying to get this fixed it was around 4-5k. I wasn't there in the very beginning (if I 'member right).
Do you know the part I'm talking about? A strut is mounted to the suspension at the bottom, and to the body at the upper end. The body mounting point is a bearing that allows for a certain 'flex' This bearing is what they call a "damper".

ardvarkus,
I have an appointment later this week and I will bring in a print-out of this thread. Can you let me know if your sound was kind of like this:
Mine sounds like it is coming from the suspension somewhere. It is only noticeable on small bumps (like cracks in the road). I once had a car with a broken spring, and this is kind of the same, however much quieter and less pronounced. It sounds like something is loose and 'rattles' a bit over small bumps. Almost like there is a small amount of play in the suspension. It seems like you can feel the rattle sometimes through the floor as well.
Thanks,
Rod

Yes, I looked under the truck shortly after I bought it and noticed how the strut was attached. If I understand you, this damper cannot be seen from underneath when I put it up on jack stands. Did they replace the damper with a differently designed part or just the same one that was there before? |
