Are there any IT tech's in here?

I have broadband(cable) with Windows '98 SE and my ISP is Comcast@home here in Baltimore. I would like to be able to change my IP address for fear of being hacked. I have contacted Comcast concerning this, but they refused to change it. They claim that their new system changes IP addresses everytime I reboot my system. This is not true because when I run "winipcfg" my IP address stays the same no matter how many times I release/renew it. Are there any other ways to change my IP address?

I really don't want to get a router because I only have 1 computer and it's never on for more than 1-3 hours at a time.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Actually try and reboot your PC and you will probably find that your IP address will change (DHCP), just renewing your IP address will not produce your desired results. I would recommend that you purchase a router/firewall, it is very cheap insurance. I recently picked up a router with a built in hub for only $9 after rebate!!

If Comcast is using DHCP & not Static IP - which they say they are - then your IP addy will change from time to time. You should invest in a router or at least use a firewall software. Zonealarm has a free version and works well. Norton Internet security also has a very good firewall.

Best way is to buy a router & get a software firewall - you can do this for under $100. Do a search for internet security - there was a terrific thread on this topic not too long ago.

Good luck

If you want to change your IP address only once ....

Every DHCP server is tied to your MAC address of your network card. If you release your IP and put in a new network card ($10), you will get a new IP.

Just another option. I would still invest in a router!

True get a router (hardware firewall) then install a Firewall like tiny, zone, or black (software) then you shouldnt have to worry unless a specific person it trying to hack you then you should notify his ISP.

Jon,

Why don't you want to get a router/firewall?, 1 or 20 systems should have no bearing on a relatively inexpensive option for system/network security...

Doesn't matter if you are the net all day, or just for ONE SECOND, the piece of mind is well WORTH IT!

Easy to set up, heck SEVERAL of the folks here could walk you through the set up!

The way ATTBI is setup in my suburban Chicago area, I could release/renew ALL DAY and probably get the SAME IP assigned by DHCP. They segrete POOLS of IP's and there is a HIGH probability that NO ONE else is going to release/renew into your pool... The other thing to consider is that ATTBI uses the MAC address to TRACK you. There means of allowing/disallowing access to their network is DEPENDANT on the MAC address that they have in their database -- change your NIC Card/MAC address and you WILL be asked to REREGISTER and/or FLAGGED as somebody who is trying to connect with a computer ATTBI does not know about...
