The manual did say to change transaxile fluid for the 1st time at 7500 miles and every 30K after that. The dealer mechanic said that it is only "break in" fluid. The 7500 mile service includes the replacement of this fluid with the "normal" fluid. The service costs me $185. Is this necessary?
Tom and Ray Magliozzi (Cartalk guys on the radio) said that you should change this fluid between 60k-90k miles, which is much more than the recommended 30k in the manual. |

| 7500 miles or 6 months whichever comes first is what the manaul says about changing the VTM fluid. Do a search on VTM fluid and you'll find a ton of previous discussions on it. If you can change your own oil, then a VTM oil change is just as easy and will run you about $20-25 for the fluid and crush washers available only at Honda or Acura. Full detailed instructions are in the archives. BTW, $185 is a rip! |

| "The Car Talk" guys are not talking about the MDX's rear axle, which is unlike the axle in any other vehicle (except the Honda Pilot). Do what the manual says -- and don't use anything other than Honda VTM-4 fluid. I service mine under the severe service schedule, so changed my VTM-4 fluid at 7500 and again at 15000 miles. IMO, the CarTalk guys are correct in about 0.8% of what they say; the rest is bull and/or making fun of their listeners. |
